It's derived from the Latin for "Twin".

My last name has a story behind it, but alas, that is a tale for another day thread.

"carrier of Christ" which is kind of ironic, since I'm an atheist.(well you could expand it to the message of Christ which i kind of agree on, especially the being nice to people bit)

wiki quote 'Harry is a Norwegian derogatory term used in slang, derived from the English name Harry' oh well, although I get the impression it means 'if you have this name, chances are at least 3 other fuckers within a 100 square yards of you do too.' seriously my best friend is called harry, I know 3 other harry's, I have acquaintances with at least five more of the buggers

PS: I dare you to pronounce it right
I think I can probably do it right... Simpel toch?
Haha, you know that was aimed at the english-speaking part of the community. I'm pretty sure the germans and scandinavians wouldn't have much of a problem either.
When I was doing an internship in England they actually called me Bob cause they couldn't say my name right :p
Nice to know I'm not the only Dutchman around here though :)

My name is Greek in origin, coming from "Stephanos" meaning "the crowned one".
And then my surname, which is Norman, meaning "one who has taken a vow of poverty".
They don't seem to match, but I do like my name ^^

From an English surname, originally taken from various place names, derived from a Celtic word meaning "hill".

yeah, you cheated:p I was talking about people from UK/America/Australia. I've never heard anyone who's motherlanguage is English pronounce my name right. Or any word with a decent 'ei' in it for that matter.

Hehe, yeah, can't find any loophole out of there, I agree with you.
Wait a second, I'm going to try and find a word with a decent "ei".

EDIT: Damn, I failed.

Alright, people are gonna rip the hell out of my this, and I grant that to you since I'd do the same in your position; my name, is Scottish/English, for "Crooked Nose". Yep. Which doesn't make much sense since I like nothing like Scrooge or anything.

However when I searched for my second name, I found no results, which didn't surprise me much since I took a quiz not long ago which used Google technology (or claimed to) to find out how many people had my name. Apparently no one else in the world shares my name.
