In all honesty, I have to go with American PMCs. Clearly the money is being pumped into them faster than they can spend it. So why not use the excess to create a shell company to try to take over the world, then another company to sell the weapons to fight them, and pump the money back through and use the profits to retire to Some private island in the south Pacific.

That's what I'd do if I had no ethics guiding my behavior besides the overwhelming desire to take the money of everyone everywhere.

WoW knows that villains are an equal-opportunity industry. It seems like there's no cult so crazed that members of every race can't come together to sacrifice virgins to their dark god. Hell, the Twilight's Hammer includes Tauren.

Life was also pretty sweet for Germans in Nazi Germany, that's just how it is when you're at the correct end of the unstoppable war machine.
Yes, but after getting slaughtered and conquered you would be at the correct end. Not the case with the Nazis. I know the slaughtering and conquering isn't exactly a cool thing, but still. They brought lots of great things, but they brought it with fire and sword.

I'm not saying they were awesome, I'm saying they weren't Nazis. For one thing, they didn't try to exterminate anyone.

The Mongols were actually pretty cool. They conquered bloodily and horribly, but in their empire shit was awesome. There was absolute religious freedom and it was a very secure place. It was said that a man could walk from one end of the empire to the other with a plate of gold on his head and never risk being robbed.

That security was a enormous boost for land-based trading routes, which lead to great economic growth for everyone, etc.

TL;DR Mongols hardly that bad, certainly not on par with the Nazis.
Someone's been watching Crash Course.
You better believe it. I learned more about Mesopotamia, Africa, China, the Mongols, and the Silk Road in those videos than in all my years in the extremely Eurocentric school system.

If you believe what I learned there you'd assume Africa didn't even exist until we started invading.

How about the rascally Spaniards?
- Raided the Pre-Columbian civilizations in South America into obliteration
- Very Catholic, so you can have Inquisition minibosses, complete with black KKK-style cowls
- Don't sound funny when they open their mouths
- Swarthy!

People all your ideas makes no sense
It is genially obvious (at least for me)

Cargo cult
Maybe not for the whole game series, but at least for one game
Introduce the blond african-descendant villain who claims to be John Frum
Then he uses their religious beliefs to lead group of them on the raid on the huge cruise ship- loot, taking hostages or stealing ship- you know, the usual pirate stuff
(something like MS Allure of the Seas, or even bigger)
Main hero could be someone from that ship

Not the worst background for the game story

The only games off the top of my head where you could kill Mongols and/or Vikings was a select few of the Total War games.

I'm surprised communists didn't make it on the list, tough I guess they are still under the Russian "tag" (even though that is incorrect, since not only Russians were communists and in modern time only China, Cuba and North Korea are still communist states).

But seriously, when will modern war games mature and realize that a war is a bit more complex than simply "good guys and bad guys"?

If we keep the mindset, though, some ideas would be:

Spanish Inquisition (which is not expected by anybody!!)

British Empire when they colonized Africa and Asia (what? It's ok to take other people's lands as long as History doesn't talk smack about you?)

I find it hard to be against most german soldiers just because they were under the control of Hitler, I mean not all of them were as bad as the fuhrer and his cronies. My girlfriend is german and her great grandfather was a german soldier on the eastern front, in a tank division. Her grandfather was a boy in Berlin when the ruskies turned up, and he helped find them food in return for not being shot at random. Its therefore hard to play WWII shooters pretending nazis are anything but humans as well, in the same position as you.

I would be up for a game set in Nepoloenic times when officers of opposing armies would socialise and play sports together in the days leading up to battles, the demonising of the enemy is actually something you could alter to make the story more interesting. You could use your social connections to arrange surrenders more easily, sparing hundreds of men, and if you get a reputation for being a betraying bastard (like Napoleon) then you have to fight every fight the hard way, killing all your potential allies.

Or just fight the French. C'mon, its not been done!

There is a difference between colonisation and conquest.

As a german i gotta say: Why not modern germany?

It would be about the heroic quest of an american soldier to stop the evil german Bundesrepublik from bringing democracy, green energy and really bad Reality Television to... well, America would be a bit too big for us. Let's say France. We could take France. If we're lucky.Probably not. Okay, so let's say Belgium. So, a game about the evil german Bundesrepublik trying to bring democracy, green energy and really bad TV to Belgium. Sounds like a premise, doesn't it?

Yeah. Conquest is done with armies, weapons, killing people etc. etc.

Colonisation is done with flags.

Obviously.

America. I'm not saying this out of some blind America bashing, but with the military power that it has, any person opposing it would be an underdog and everyone loves the underdog. Seriously, last I heard they had bullets that superheat a room it's fired in and bomb that can hit a building and not damage neighbouring buildings.

And for added irony, have the main character be a Russian soldier after Russia joined up with the Ex-Axis and China to stop America's attempt to take over the world "to make it safer for everyone".
Obviously, someone else could word the premise better than I can but I still think it could be a good idea. Paraphrasing Yahtzee, I much prefered where the unstoppable advance warmachine were the people we are fighting against.
I love this idea. As does most of the world.
But the core demographic for games and films are Americans (even if the game sells more outside of America, the target audience are always Americans).
Honestly, I think most Americans are smart enough to enjoy it, but publishers are terrified of taking a chance, so you'll never see it happen.

I do agree. Give Americans some credit, I doubt a piece of media would fail that horrendously if there isn't an American flag in every scene or an ending where the hero saves the day with a bald eagle on his shoulder while "America, Fuck yea" plays in the background.
I just think it's marketers and publishers being utter retards who fear change.

I think the indie scene might be brave enough to try the concept but I think this premise deserves a Triple A budget. A first person shooter with emphasis on guerrilla tactics, where head on attacks end in a massacre in their favor.
