You could try the Mirror's Edge flash. If you like getting into your games then a good beta I found a while back was Planeshift, although I do not know of its current state of playability. The Portal flash is also very good and so is Bloons, More Bloons, and Even More Bloons. Very addicting.
La-Mulana may destroy your will to live, but it is quite the amazing freeware accomplishment. I mean, the world is about 4 times larger than Super Metroid's world, and a heavy, heavy, heavy emphasis on the puzzle element... like Cave Story, there's an English patch for it, you will need it.
EDIT: Iji is also amazing, it plays like a cross between Flashback and System Shock, so that can't be a bad thing...

First, you should play the game that I made over the summer [http://www.seriousbusiness.co.cc/index.php?f=special&i=12]. Then you should go to the Retro Remakes Freeware Games Database [http://freeware.remakes.org/] (it's not only for remakes, there are plenty of original games - including mine - in there) and look to see what strikes your fancy.
Oh yeah, and there's always Demos. Grab an MMO demo, try it for 2 weeks, switch to the next. Afterwards, you might pick one of them up again, for real this time. Barring that, there's no shortage of Demos out there. I know some people who never bought a specific Battlefield game, because they could get a pretty good experience from the demo level.
