What games don't you "understand"?

COD4. While I like it, I don't think it is as groundbreaking as made out to be.
The gamemechanics certainly aren't, but I think(and know, if we're talking my oppinion) what makes it so great is the single player story. They really took war, and made it very unglamorous. Halo/Half Life/many other shooters have you be this heroic character, that survive against all odds.
Modern Warfare had the balls to show you that you're really a little, very unimportant piece. They killed you(or one of you) off just like that, not even in a heroic or fantastic fashion... You were just an ordinary man, and you were killed by a weapon(the nuke). The crawling out of that burning chopper, only to die is one of the best moments in gaming history ever, if you ask me. Not as great, but definitely memorable, is the part at the very end, when your escape attempt is cut to a halt, and the teammates you have come to know are killed one by one. By one man with a gun. It was that feeling that yes, you and your mates were just humans, and not unkillable heroes, and no, everything wouldn't be good in the end. And they still stood up, with their last dying breaths. There was a touch of realism to it... The heroes don't always win, and live happily ever after. It was brutal, it was real, and it was so very simple.

To me, Infinity Ward did a masterpiece there. I agree wholeheartedly that the gameplay in itself is, well, good but not something that will pass into gaming history. But the plot, and execution of it, will.

When it first came out, Halo was a groundbreaking experience with brilliant controls, graphics and gameplay which left many people in awe marking it as THE game of the year... I however, played it three years later and didn't think much of it at all. Age kills even the best.

Why is it that every time a game is hailed as being ground-breaking or genre-changing people have to come around and trash everything about it. Even if something had been done before / better in another game, perhaps people consider the game in question 'groundbreaking' because they never played the other game. How is that their fault?

It's an OPINION. Shared by MANY people. If you don't have the same opinion, WHO CARES? Honestly, if you don't get what's so great about Halo / Half-Life / WoW / GTA / Final Fantasy / CoD 4 or whatever, fine. Don't play them, but quit trying to ruin everyone else's fun.

Also, shame on anyone who has said they don't get any of the above titles without actually trying it first.

I've never played Half-Life or CoD so I will reserve judgement on them until I do so. However, I love Halo, GTA and Mass Effect, for the same reasons that many other people love them.

Different strokes for different folks.

Final Fantasy 6

Okay, the game really has many good parts, but the Active Time fghts and random encounters destroy allmost everything for me..

Realistic racing games.

I understand in theory that it's mostly about the pursuit of perfection. They want the best possible time.

I just can't grasp that people want a game that's only about beating times...and then buy several games that all do the same thing! That's a lot of driving in circles!

Arcade-like racing is exciting, lots of stuff happening to get the blood flowing. But realistic games just ensure that you can obliterate the last half-hour of lapping with a small mistake, and the fans LIKE that fact? I just fail to appreciate that kind of gameplay.

COD4, I just don't get what's fun about it.

World of Warcraft, same problem.
Agreed.

The same with Modern Warfare 2; why is everyone jizzing their pants about this game?

Final Fantasy VII. Dreading on thin ice here, but I don't see how it was any better than many of the other FFs. At the time, understandable. Now? Not so much.
No, I agree as well, but probably for a different reason. Which was that VIII was my first Final Fantasy game, so VII has always felt like a step backwards in my mind.

I don't understand Crackdown. It's not hard to know why. I really can't like a game without some intellectual stimulation (in other words, a story), so since Crackdown consists of nothing but grinding your character, it doesn't do it for me.

Monkey Island.

I just don't get why people like it. I tried it and found it to be very boring. Oh well, to each his own.

Bioshock and Mass Effect. They weren't bad games but after playing through them once, there wasn't anything about them that made me want to do it again, not even for achievements.

Prototype. Maybe I could play for more than five minutes without quitting in frustration, I'd understand it better.

No apologies needed. When I said that 'perhaps you have forgotten' I didn't mean it sarcastically or anything like that. FSM knows I've forgotten more than my share of things.
How does ONE weapon type automatically make it an FPS? It's be more accurate to call it an RPG with a very light FPS element.
