The fuck are you doing with your watches that the loops in the strap break? There's no strain on those, they just retain the excess strap material. They don't need to be thick.

The watch on the left was a graduation gift from my dad when I finished college. I've had it for almost 13 years, and it's the watch I generally wear on a daily basis. The strap has never been replaced and the loops are thinner than the ones on the new watch and have always been fine.
I think they were just that cheap. I'm pretty sure they broke purely from the wear and tear of me putting on and fastening my watch.

On cheap watches, breaking isn't uncommon. I got mine replaced a month or two back, also for the price of a new watch.

I was shocked indeed when I got a replacement. I thought the saleslady said 190. Turns out it was really 1,900. Definitely was not expecting to pay that much, especially when the leather is clearly just scraps.

Ubuntu for DA/DS work. Also because I am getting sick of Microsoft, and to hedge against it falling.

Amazon: we'll see if I ever actually get this. I've ordered things on Amazon before that they just couldn't end up fulfilling and canceled the order. Scary that Sony would release the PS Pro with no drive and then not ensure they have enough of these for purchase. EDIT: Canceled order. I ordered one from Bestbuy that says I'll have it this week.

Damn, "Gunsmith Cats" arrived sooner than I expected. The Amazon order said June because I ordered both volumes at the same time and the second one comes out in June. I was ready to read "The Complete Chronicles of Conan" by Robert E. Howard (my first novel in forever) after finishing "Lone Wolf and Cub" in perhaps two weeks. Actually, I kind of lost interest in "Gunsmith Cats." Wanted to get into another older manga and couldn't decide on one before ordering "Conan" on Ebay. But now that I'm actually looking at the clean, stylish artwork of the girls on the still shrink-wrapped book, I'm interested again. Guess I can go back and forth, since they're probably both episodic.

A brand-new queen-sized mattress for under $300. Sadly I can't have it delivered until next Saturday, because they can't guarantee a delivery window. Guess I'll have to put up with this terrible mattress for one more week.

New pair of front tires for my car. Again. Current pair has only been on there for six months. But the right one is damaged and it's only a matter of time before it blows.

was doing some emergency late mother's day buying and a site let me upload photos onto a customised mug, which it then gave a 3D preview of how it'd look before spending that I could rotate n zoom anywhere desired on a low data phone browser with ad blocking turned on. somehow I found that moment immeasurably more impressive than anything generative ('regurgitive' should clarify...wait, it's regurgATitive?? Nah not having that useless syllable lurking about no more, I denounce you void and gone, oh cumbersome grumble! ) AI has tried peacocking all over the place. from mere utility alone!

A new 5.1.2 Soundbar with Atmos. Not as good as a proper speaker setup but I have children and cats who like to fuck with stuff. Honestly, once I figured out to use the eARC properly I also needed my optical cable installed, it sounded fuckin’ great. In honour of Val Kilmer I played the opening of Top Gun Maverick. I’m pretty sure my neighbours heard it. But it was clear and loud where it mattered. Well worth the $450 I paid for it.

Going to be spending a lot of this weekend stocking up on anything non-perishable I can get my hands on (random essentials like toothpaste, cleaning products, etc.) since these world-wide tariffs are about to make everything more expensive for the foreseeable future. Thanks Trump voters.

I would legitimately be interested to hear about differences in prices.

Publisher's Synopsis

'Impassioned, hugely informative, wonderfully controversial, and scary as hell' John le Carré

Around the world in Britain, the United States, Asia and the Middle East, there are people with power who are cashing in on chaos; exploiting bloodshed and catastrophe to brutally remake our world in their image. They are the shock doctors.

Exposing these global profiteers, Naomi Klein discovered information and connections that shocked even her about how comprehensively the shock doctors' beliefs now dominate our world - and how this domination has been achieved. Raking in billions out of the tsunami, plundering Russia, exploiting Iraq - this is the chilling tale of how a few are making a killing while more are getting killed.

'Packed with thinking dynamite ... a book to be read everywhere' John Berger

'If you only read one non-fiction book this year, make it this one' Metro Books of the Year

'There are a few books that really help us understand the present. The Shock Doctrine is one of those books' John Gray, Guardian

'A brilliant book written with a perfectly distilled anger, channelled through hard fact. She has indeed surpassed No Logo' Independent

Publisher's Synopsis

In 1965, the U.S. government helped the Indonesian military kill approximately one million innocent civilians. This was one of the most important turning points of the twentieth century, eliminating the largest communist party outside China and the Soviet Union and inspiring copycat terror programs in faraway countries like Brazil and Chile. But these events remain widely overlooked, precisely because the CIA's secret interventions were so successful.

In this bold and comprehensive new history, Vincent Bevins builds on his incisive reporting for the Washington Post, using recently declassified documents, archival research and eye-witness testimony collected across twelve countries to reveal a shocking legacy that spans the globe. For decades, it's been believed that parts of the developing world passed peacefully into the U.S.-led capitalist system. The Jakarta Method demonstrates that the brutal extermination of unarmed leftists was a fundamental part of Washington's final triumph in the Cold War.
