What if Skyrim is awful?

Seriously, what if? What if it sucks? What if it's all been hype? WHAT WILL WE DO?
Sucks is such a subjective feeling, to me it's not living up to the expectations, that has a lot to do with the hype the thing in question received.

The nice thing about Skyrim is that it's hype has been very subdued. They told us a crap load of "bad" stuff about the game up front.

They told us not to expect all that much more than Oblivion.

They told us it can be beaten in two hours.

They told us they couldn't possibly fix all the bugs.

There was a lot of good stuff too but it was mostly mechanical stuff they were talking about.

So Bethesda has done a pretty good job at keeping our expectations in check.

The one thing that could make Skyrim "Suck" for me is if the NPC's are as repetitive and lifeless and schizophrenic and so on as they were in Oblivion. That would make the new marriage thing as token and pointless as it was in Fable.

And if that happens I'll be disappointing but it won't ruin the game for me. I still loved Oblivion and I rarely ever talked to any towns folk except for shop keepers.

IF and only if Skyrim is buggy to the point where it is unplayable, I would just pack it up & put it on my shelf for a week, then try it again with the hopes that they patched it (like I did with FO:NV, a game made by Obsidian; no developer input by Bethesda - haters gonna' hate).

If the game sucks... scrap that line of thought right there.

If the game is littered with prickly bugs that band together to ruin my entertainment in the game, I would just have to scream at them to go away upon each occurrence with them; like so:
Then man up & continue playing (In Oblivion I just modded them away).

Else, I will be thoroughly enjoying the game on console (this time) as my PC is too outdated -
I haven't upgraded since WoW: TBC, TESIV & Medieval 2: Total War.

I played Fallout 3, Morrowind & Oblivion. All of which were utterly fantastic. So I have my unfounded faith in the game.

I hate mods, people make out like the only way to play TES is with mods, its still awesome vanilla, I love vanilla its so much better than chocolate and strawberry
I agree with this guy to an extent. I loved vanilla oblivion... but after 300+ hours I wanted to spice things up. THATS what mods are for in my honest opinion. Morrowind looks and feels like garbage today and nostalgia ain't saving it... so mods are almost a necessity for me at this stage.

On topic:

Skyrim CAN'T suck for me because it has everything I want:

Customisable character (aesthetics/stats): check

Wide open space for exploration: check

Quests to occupy my time in said space: check

That's all I want in an Elder Scrolls game. That is also taking into account bugs and glitches that are common in open world games. I expect them and will embrace them, they'll be fixed eventually anyway, whether by the devs or mods later on.

Unless the game is literally unplayable and not whiney little baby unplayable (waaah, game crashed and now I have to redo the last 2 minutes waaah).

Hehe .Thats why im trying not to get hyped about the game or reading to much into it. If i get too hyped i just know it wont live up to expectations.

I totally get where you're coming from, but they've actually tried, at the very least, to diversify the NPC pallette recently. By hiring over 70 voice actors for the bloody game to record 60,000+ lines of dialogue. I think that's about 10 times more than Oblivion, at least in terms of voice actors.

I can totally fall in line with the idea that it might not be perfect, but at the same time the lack of pre-release hype coupled with how good the game is looking at this point is getting me really bloody excited. I'm glad the Bethesda haven't said "oh hey guys, our game is going to be the best game ever made" they just told us about it and showed us some stuff, and now it's shaping up to make Oblivion look goddamn well primitive.
Well that's exactly it. You'd be insane to think it would be bug free. A game with SOOOO many variables it's almost impossible to fully test to the limits. Bethesda have been honest about what will/will not be in the game. While I'm sure we're all being incredibly impatient & want to see more, they have given us a reveal, a release, hundreds of reviewers varying amounts of time with the game & 40 minutes of gameplay. That's more than almost any other game coming out so far.

I'm not expecting a "perfect" game. But I am very reassured this game will be better than Oblivion / Fallout (since it takes the best from both) and had the full power and dedication of the Bethesda team for the past 3 years or so. It is their flagship game after all.

If anyone hates on this game for Bethesda's track record (which is pretty bloody good considering how open their RPG's are [FO:NV not included]); Oblivion's: voice actor number, physics, combat, size; for being more amateur-friendly (which it is, but it's also allowed for more variables for experts like me)... etc. - You're just being finicky & are looking for faults where there are none.

Anyone can call me a fanboy (such a crappy term for defending multiple developers from the rest), but TES games & Fallout 3 have been some of the best games, in every aspect, I have played in a long time. Especially in comparison with some of the other games out these days. *Cough-that-sounds-like-COD-as-CoD-has-been-going-downhill-faster-than-a-Bugatti-Veyron-with-a-rocket-attached-to-its-rear*

Just to make myself sound cool; I'm gonna' go play Doom 2 and then maybe some Halo 3 followed by the original rainbow six. 3 brilliant games that make more modern games shiver and fall apart in their buggy, less-unique boots.

I don't think this will be an issue for me, personally. I play Bethesda games on console (can't afford a real gaming computer, deal with it.) and I haven't been disappointed yet. If, however, (and this is a BFI ) it ends up sucking, then I will be severely angry with Bethesda for making me so exicted. Then I will buy Arkham City from the cash that I make selling it after a tearful goodbye.

But again, I doubt this will be an issue. I have faith that Bethesda knows what it's doing.

I'm with ya! Seriously after the New Vegas beta I just cannot get hyped for this game at all. Well that and New Vegas still crashes all the time. After hearing that this one might have a new engine I just said fuck it. If they can't get a game right after using the same engine three times in a row what hope is there for a new one?

I'd laugh. Since people act like its going to be God's gift to gaming and not a improved version of Oblivion just like Oblivion was for Morrowind. Also, I'd be satisfied with knowing that Arkham City's deserved spot as game of the year will be secured. Funny thing is I'm still getting the Skyrim, but since I'm not the one buying it I have nothing to lose.
