Emo means to me "Emotionally unstable", they normally participate in self arm (its not just on the wrists) and sometimes they try to be angsty.
Gothic Emo are Emos who wear Black Clothes, white and black make-up who listen to heavy metal, act more angsty.

I used be emo.
And not one of those fake emo's.
Where did the whole emo's are gay come from?
Emo's get all the chicks!
But anyway being emo involves dressing in black, cutting yourself and listning to that genre of music.

I'm a fan of the 'Emo' dress style, but not the whole lifestlye. As far as I know, that's what most people think.

"Emo" is the shorthand designation for someone who looks bad in plain clothes with moderate makeup, and would be completely forgettable and boring if they didn't cause drama while claiming that they can't help it because they have some variation of depression.

The guys who wear black and have hair in their face.
Yeah, they sometimes make me angry enough to burn down orphanages.
The girls, not so much - they're usually rather nice and hot. Although I'm pretty sure they would be hotter without all that makeup and the black hair, but still.

Emo was a trend of suburban kids who felt like their life was becoming so plain and ordinary that they were beginning to lose their identity. They started to wear all black, heavy eye-shadow and jet-black hair because they saw themselves as someone who was merely a shadow of a person. They were going for a dead look.

Now this isn't to say that people who wear black are emos. Before there was Emo we had Punk Rockers. they don't really wear ALL black, but a majority of their clothing is black. They saw themselves as misunderstood. They had mostly black shirts, blue jeans and steel toe boots.

Nowadays we have "Scene" kids who only dress "emo" because it started being marketed as a "cool" look.

those poor REAL emo kids. They had 1 sliver of individuality left in their lives and then it was taken away because they became marketable. luckily most of them grew up and realized that their lives have plenty of individuality and decided to NOT kill themselves because of "scene."

Emo is a music style not a lifestyle. It although due to huge ignorance has evolved a derivative from the goth lifestyle. Due to this the emo is a slightly less dark style. The wrist slicing is only done by the depressed emos and there numbers have stayed the same since the start of this lifestyle.

It's short for 'emotional' (I think) which has all the negative whiny-ass connotations that go with it. It's like calling a fat person 'a bit heavy' or a simple person 'special.' It's a euphemism for a social stereotype that cut themselves, try desperately to believe they're depressed when actually they're just massive bellends and who wear tight black clothing.

Note to readers: In no way do I support the views stated above, I think people can do what they like. That's just the way I see the stereotype as being perceived.

Just to clear up a bit of confusion here people that look like emo's but are actually just attention seeking/listening to a variety of different music genres or don't think about suicide are what's known as "Scene" and and not to be confused with actual emo's. This posers prance around and are not emo.

the way someone acts, if someone is always depressed, focused on the negative, and cant seem to enjoy life. Thats my definition of emo, i dont give a damn how someone dresses, its the way they act that counts

I think you mean this.

OT: I gave up trying to define emo a long time ago. Everyone has their own definitions. But it is annoying how some people call anyone who is sad or dress in a certain way or listen to the music emo when they are definitely not.
That pic is win :D

Also I listen to more emo music than every emo kid where I live so music taste is not really part of it. I think its mostly style.

Emo is short for a particular music genre.

What people THINK is emo, is the clothing style, but thats called "scene", seriously...

Being "emotional" doesn't make you emo. Whining about how your parents doesn't "understand" you isn't emo, no parents understand their teenagers... The "emo culture" is one massive fake and I hate it. Your "scene" you listen to the music genre emo and you whine a heck of a lot about things that everyone has a problem with.

Get out of my life poser...
- Seems like a massive generalisation..
Oh well, originally it was a music genre 'Emotional'
However the term 'Chav' (I guess english escapists would understand) is another name for a different social clique,it originally stemmed from background, and working class, due to the clothes people wore and the similar attitudes, but now includes the music they listen to.
Emo, however stemmed from music talking about generally negative emotions, where people commonly wore black, and had outrageous hair, etc.
However now Emo seems to be more of an ideal, rebelling against parents, being 'depressed' and striving to be different.

OT, while I can't stand whiny emo kids who won't stop complaining for no reason nor the stupid fashion sense of all black and tight fitting clothing, I still can't stop thinking emo girls are kinda hot...

Yeah, I find that sexy for some reason.
*mouth dropped with a little spit coming out* hmmmm, what? Oh yeah, I do too. OT: (Stereotype version)They look goth except they cut themselves. (Actual version) People who dress in a lot of black and listen to hardcore music.

I once spoke to someone in a chat room like application once.

Myself; Hello!

EmoFox1021; Hi...

Myself; Someone not feeling peppy?

EmoFox1021; I'm emo.

Myself; That's... neat. Have anything INTERESTING to talk about?

Okay, the conversation didn't go exactly like this, but no matter what subject we began talking about, it always seemed to end on how so-so was emo.

I've always considered people who claim to be "Emo" and say that they cut themselves is just trying to make others feel bad for them so they can hog lots and lots of attention. Emo is a style of music and clothing. People tried to convince themselves that they are hardcore of completely independent from anyone else, BUT THEY DEPEND ON OTHER PEOPLE'S PITY AND ATTENTION. Such hypocrites people can be sometimes.

An emo is a stereotype which people employ on a set of people which dress in black and try to look sad ( well some of them ) because the people that employ this stereotype are most of the time too lazy to get to know them.
But then there are of course those emos that think their unique because their emos and exclude everyone who don't listen to the same music as them or dress the same as them so techniclly their just as bad as a cheerleader except they are probably lower on the food chain.

And an emotional person doesn't need to be all grimdark, grimdark and more grimdark.
There are other emotions you know like love, passion, joy and true sadness which in fact is beautiful.

An emo guy is incredibly metrosexual with borderline female hair. A scene kid is a lesser version of that.

Still, emo and scene girls are fiiiiiiiiiiiit.
