The rudeness and ignorance of your comments is only forgivable because of the sheer hilarity of them, OP. I don't even like Anime that much, but the way you've expressed your dislike is abominably rude.

Dear Texas,

I seem to be a obvious specimen for you to disect, so here's my opinion.

It's obvious to me that your problem is that you've walked into anime expecting something capable of holding a candle to stuff you've watched and started with some fairly bad stuff like Naruto. Gurren Lagann is very good but like you said, you need to understand the genre (mecha, action) conventions to really like it. I haven't watched code geass, maybe soon.

Basically it's all up to that post you mentioned about art being as much about itself being good as the community surrounding it. Anime is surrounded by a shit community, whose mental instabilities make them say stuff like "kawaii" all the time. and the hardcore otaku's in japan are no better, having sex with pillows with their fav characters pictures on them and creeping the shit out of everyone.

So everyone that's properly into anime will most likely tell you about how mainsteam anime lovers are all douches. I know, i really do, my sister had many weaboo friends and watched inuyasha, Full Metal Alchemist and Naruto. All 3 are shows that fan girls/boys love to jump up and down over, and they did all the stuff they did.

The entire time i sat in the backround and watched the shows, meagerly impressed by most of them. I saw what anime was, and what it was capable of doing, and i liked that, a lot. So i remained uninterested, mostly reading about some shows on sites, but not watching them. I mean i haven't watched Gundam at all, but i can talk about it with some guys i know.

Then i watched Gurren Lagann, and hell, i fucking loved it, it embraced everything about anime that appealed to me, the unique settings, the unbelievable characters and such

In my haste i started downloading anime and keeping up to date with latest releases and such.
I like some of the stuff that comes out of the anime industry stuff, but not much, when compared to it as a whole.

Honestly it's also about what you like.
I'm not gonna say that all those Magical girl animes are bad, but i'm not gonna fucking watch them of my own will.

You seem like a fairly intelligent person Texas, so i think i will just say, cultivate a different mental state when watching anime. Because there's no way a mostly western film watcher can just jump into anime straight off the bat. (eg. I don't keep my action/adventure hat on when watching romances)

Also, for records. You're posts are probably making a lot of anime watchers consider if anime really is that good.

Oh yeah, I'm 16 years old. hahahaha... i think i'm a perfect example of the "nerds" you were talking to...

I'm thrilled that the holier-than-thou voice got put away for a while. Anyway...

Anime is a medium, just like anything else. You can't say "all paintings are bad," or "all live action movies are bad," or "all 1800s literature is bad." So you can't say "all anime is bad."

Anyway, I'm echoing 14 pages of commentary, so tl;dr watch some good anime and put away your biases. I recommend the lists people have on the top of page 14.

It's amazing just how fast they rush to the defense of their asian patronus. 13 pages? They're like a swarm of little chirpy birds that dart straight to the lone crumb of intrigue people drop just to point and laugh at their over-zealousness.
What's worse, people defending something they love, or people who don't even care to bring counter-arguments to the thesis they put down in the first place?

And besides, I'm not a weeaboo by any means (I'm only currently watching my third anime series, and the first I started, like, what, a year ago?) but I set forth my argument, and watched as after my counter-argument to a reply to my first argument wasn't answered, and thus, I figured, that the OP, who set out to get some clearance about anime either a) was convinced otherwise or b) stubbornly refused to acknowledge how what I said was true.

Either way, I agree on the point that there are too many replies. These 14 pages of replies aren't all unique, and almost every post by every pro-anime poster here have largely been the same.

Hence why I really didn't bother checking this thread out after I posted here myself.

American telivision is crap. Really, the same shit over and over and over again.
If I see another 2 and a 1/2 man show again then I will punch something, but Burn notice is okay.
So, I can't convince you to watch anime and nobody can.
But if you're open minded then I would recommend!
1)Lucky Star (yes it's as stupid as George W Bush on crack but funny as hell).
2)Spice and wolf(different theme and very good).
3)Elfen lied.
4)Neon Genesis Evangelion. The charachters actually act as humans.
5)Chobits.
6)Everything with Studio Ghibli.

But I do admit that mainstream anime fans are disgusting....One of them was going to make out with me and possibly rape me.
I just didn't know if it was a girl or a boy ._.

But all modern vampire literature is bad. *snap*!

What I got from the OP: "I'm a film student and this anime is lame! I have spoken!"

I thought if you studied media and film, you'll know not everyone likes the same thing, and usually popular things tend to be average and have a well built audience. I don't like anime, but I respect its merit as an entertainment and don't judge people for enjoying it.

I can imagine you being a real asshole to your girlfriend about this too. I hope she does the same to you about western movies.

This is turning into something like an Anime suggestions thread.

The maker of this thread got suspended, i believe people can safely assume that he watched a couple of episodes from some randomly picked out anime and said episodes were in the middle of their season and dismissed it, then got angry when he realised other people enjoyed watching it and made a thread about why they shouldnt in a way that suggests an attempt of being subtle.

Texas America Murphy said:
Dear Nerds, explain to me what the heck the deal with Anime is.

A little bit of background before we collectively explore this artistic train wreck you call ?Japanimation.?

I?m a film student at the University of Texas. I have never seen an Anime before yesterday. I like to think that I give everything I watch a fair shake. Hell, I even watched an Irani film once. Now, my girlfriend Leanne is a member of our school's anime club, which meets every Friday night. Normally I don?t go with her because my JROTC usually meets on Fridays, but last night I was free because it was Christmas Eve (and its Winter Break), and my girlfriend invited me to have an ?Anime Christmas? with her and her friends who live in the area.

So I walk into the living room and there are these girls dressed up in these weird costumes and stuff. One of them runs up to me and shouts something like ?Cowiie Desi.? So I?m put off, but still determined to see what the big fuss is about. DVDs go in the player and I?m treated to what my girlfriend tells me is the most popular Animes.

First off we watched Naruto. I?ve seen German Art House cinema that made more sense than this. I guess it was about Ninjas, but they were all wearing orange jumpsuits? At no point did any of the plot make sense or any of the characters develop.

After that we watched two episodes of Code Geuess. It was like walking into a Mexican soap opera midway through the plot. Everyone was pulling gambits and double gambits and Russian reversals. I didn?t know who was betraying whom, and I don?t think those cardboard cutouts did either. Also, why is Britain invading Japan? We already did that!

Finally, we watched an episode of this thing Guren Lagan. It felt like I was six years old and watching Power Rangers again. You?d think this would be a compliment. A sort of return to youth. But even at 6 I was doubtful of the artistic validity of Power Rangers. Also, the fact that every character on that show was sexually attracted to a 12 year old girl is incredibly disturbing. Is this okay in Japan?

Some basic research reveals that these shows are some of the most popular Anime both here and in Japan. Why is it so popular? What is so great about these shows? I?m so confused. Nothing anyone does makes any sense, the characters are all cliches, and nothing ever actually happens.

I couldn?t help but notice that virtually half the people on this board of some sort of Anime character as their avatar, so obviously people here love it and its popular. But for all my education I cannot possibly comprehend why people call this ?art.? I was hoping that maybe y?all could enlighten me. There must be something I am missing

Edited for spelling.
I just want to say, good for you for doing ROTC! But, I hear what you are saying about Anime. I have never really found one that really appeals to me. I think it has something to do with the cultural difference and so much gets lost in translation.

You didn't really watch 'good' examples of anime. If you want the best the medium has to offer, watch stuff like Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Well, he didn't know that. He was told to watch what he watched by self-proclaimed Anime experts. How was he to know?

Eh, all of those shows are meh in my eyes too. Not all anime is good, so you have to sift through the crap to find good ones. Like with other cartoons.

Check out Cowboy Bebop, though. I'm probably not the first or last to say this, but do it. It will change your mind about everything.

I don't think you are actually trying to know what people see in anime, but are rather tying troll around a bit. Regardless, I'll try to list a few things that are reasons people like anime.

What is good about anime:

1: Art style. There are people who like the art style. I prefer the anime/manga artwork better than 'traditional' cartoon art. The artstyle allows for more intense scenes and realistic movement than the rubbery tendencies of western animation.

2: Long Plots. If you jump in front of Micky Mouse, you would ask 'what is going on this episode' and each episode is self contained, as is a lot of western work. In anime/manga there may or may not be a self contained plot, but are also long running plot strings to follow, keeping interest over the course of a string of episodes to draw you deeper. Things going on in the side of the main plot and characters developing is something that makes it seem more real even in a drawn medium because in real life not everything happens and resolves each day.

3: The Other. Great for horror, great for here too. It is different from what is normally around here. It bases it's self in a culture that at first the people here know nothing about, and introduces bits and pieces of it (sadly it is bits an pieces sometimes resulting in someone thinking they know Japanese culture because they can say 4 words and know a few fun facts)

You really weren't treated to the best, when you said Naruto I facepalmed. popular =/= good. You should look into an anime that caters more to your interests to find a good anime.
