I always liked Halo, Portal and for some reason King Kong on the PS2.. It could be glitchy at times but I always thought it was fun to play.. and I guess thats what your meant to look for in games..

Portal and Portal 2. Portal had the awesome underlying story, Portal 2 made the story its main aspect and developed on its characters. Also, Wheatley is my favourite character in any game. Ever.
Also Red Dead Redemption. Amazing characters, beautiful scenery and the story was just...wow.

Best SP shooter is Half-Life 2. I wouldn't choose it over some other games from other genres, but all my my other favorite games happen to be huge, flawed semi-masterpieces that bit off more than they could chew.
Edit: Such as Morrowind, mentioned earlier in this thread. THat games's true brilliance lies in the fact that it was something a little bit more than a game.
Best RPG experience I think goes to either the first or second Baldur's Gate. I like the first more than most people because of the exploration and because it lacked a bunch of the we-are-determined-for-you-not-to-have-fun features.

Sid Meier's Pirates!
I played all versions of this game (oldest on NES the newest being the wii version) and every single one just had unlimited playability in my opinion. You can choose what the game will be like, you got a lot of freedom, its just well made and its Pirates

For me its between the first Banjo, Zelda Twilight Princess( Yes I liked this one the most)Half-Life, Bioshock, Mass Effect, and finally Metal Gear solid 4. All of those are high quality games. With great single players.
For me it would be Thief:deadly shadows. it had great mechanics, a fairly involving story, lots of room to roam and stuff to steal, and it was a stealth game done right. Attacking from the shadows and covering your tracks was rewarded, and going rushing into Full-on combat with more than one opponent was severely punished.
Many fans of ME had this same concern. I agree that mass effect one had great RPG elements to it and honestly I missed those in ME2. However I have to say combat was revised and became nmuch better overall. In Mass Effect 3 from what I read from the game informer article it is still closer to mass effect 2 however it does have a lot more options that make it more RPG like. I'll list a few. If I were to give a definitive answer, it would change from day to day:
- Deus Ex: The story, the freedom of choice (not a big deal these days, but for its time), the awesome weapons, the perfect skill and inventory systems. If you really only want one answer from me, it's probably this one.
- Mass Effect series: The story, characters, and settings are what do it for me. I've always found the combat sort of "meh", and the skill/inventory systems were never ideal, either for being a mess, or being too dumbed down. But, the overall experience was beyond awesome.
- Half Life series: The story is great, and the gameplay is consistently revolutionary. It's often so simple, but even in the first one, they made a world that you can truly traverse and interact with in all kinds of different ways. Whenever I play the original, I always feel like I can do basically anything I want. No restrictions.
- Metal Gear Solid 4: The story... the characters. Noticing a trend in my responses? I've only played the fourth one. I started it having no idea what the backstory was. And yet, even with my limited perspective, I fell in love with the characters and loved the story. The cinematic approach to it pushed all the right buttons for me. All those little character interactions in the cut-scenes really made me care about what was happening. Once the HD versions of the rest of the games come out, I'll be playing them all.
- Honorable mentions: Fallout series (especially the first two), all Final Fantasy games I've played, God of War series, Diablo II.

For some reason that game just has endless replayability for me. I've already finished about 9 different Shepards across both the 360 and PC versions.

for now, Half-life 2 is my choice. However, in a week or so when I finally pick up first Bioshock, that may very well change. Uncharted 2, half-life 1, Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Shadow of the Colossus are close runner-ups for me. And say what you want, but I thought the campaign for Modern Warfare 2 was amazing.
