I'm impatient, I could wait for the guy to stop following me then sneak by, OR I run up and shoot him with a shotgun. Wait I already did that!

Looking at a few of my favorite games, I'm noticing a trend which wasn't common enough until just recently for me to actually see:

Half-Life 2
Bioshock Infinite
The Last of Us

A constant, likeable companion that you don't have to worry about in combat can really brighten a game right up. I've never had to load a game because I failed to protect Alyx, Elizabeth, or Ellie, which goes a long way toward not hating a character you're supposed to grow attached to. I was going to include Mass Effect and The Walking Dead in that list, but neither one really fits, since in ME your squaddies can die every time you take contact with no ill effect and TWD doesn't really have a combat system to worry about.

Steam sales. I can't resist adding to my already heavy backlog when a 75% off game shows up. Arrg, damn you steam and your stupidly effective marketing strategies!
THIS. It's especially bad since I'm currently unemployed...

Anything timed, or with a countdown, or 'kill all the things before such and such'. I'm the same way in real life too; as soon as you put a time limit on a task I have a mini panic attack or something and then just get angry at myself when I keep losing, so then any skill I may have goes out the window.

I hate time limits and fighting games.

I mean not timed missions, per se. I hate when the WHOLE game has a time limit like Pikmin or in most Mario Brothers games where every level has a timer because its a ridiculous hold over from arcade days that just won't die.

Why not have the timer count UP? You can still have speed run challenges but unless you give me some legitimate reason for why the time running out auto-kills me, then why still have it? Maybe I want to look for secrets...my precious, precious SECRETS...

I also suck at PVP that has many well known exploits, because I prefer to play fair. Hardly anyone concurs so I don't PVP aside from in TF2. Dark Souls PVP is a fucking joke, but it WAS far worse with that dragon head black firebomb spam lol.

I can't navigate ANY game for any sort of distance without a map. I get lost easily, forget where to go, miss a turn here or there, can't seem to find out how I got downstairs in the first place... I have to check the map all the time. Constantly to have any idea where I am.
I'll eventually get to the point where I don't need a map, but I hate it anyway.

So, now that you know my weakness.
I will exploit the hell out of it. errrr....

I'd say my primary weakness is attention span. I'm capable of micromanagement, I'm capable sneaking and stealthy sniping, but...If it takes too long, something flips in my brain and I'm all RAWR! DESTROY! KILL ALL THE THINGS!

This used to annoy my friends as we'd be doing something like playing Saints Row 2 and they'd take 45 minutes to...Pick an outfit, find a point on a map, etc. When they got done, they'd find there was a five star wanted rating and about a dozen helicopters aimed at them.

Sleeping Dogs remains one of the only open-world games that I've played through without ever getting bored, just because the world-building was fantastic and it didn't feel bogged down with pointless side-missions, minigames, and collect-a-thons (even though it did have all three).
Honestly, I found Sleeping Dogs to be one of the worst offenders because there was no point to most of those except to turn the game into a slog. Also, so much of the world they built was off-limits.

The pointlessness of the extras helped me not get bored of the normal missions. :D

Playing Assassin's Creed or Prototype or inFamous or Skyrim, I just look at the maps and there's fifty million extra challenges and missions and collectables that the game is shoving in my face, trying to get me to do instead of continuing the story, and I don't really like all of that because in the end it's all just pointless fluff to me anyway. I liked that Sleeping Dogs cut right to the chase and said "Yeah, we've got this stuff, but it's useless so you might as well ignore it. We probably shouldn't have even included it in the first place."

I dunno, faffing about is one of the reasons I don't really care for sandboxes. I prefer more linear areas that have large, interconnected rooms with plenty of extra spaces to explore or possibly take alternate routes, but that all eventually lead to the exit.

Having to choose between two characters really gets me. I leave my laptop, go for a walk outside, and I consider the following bullets.

1: Was one a jerk?
2: Do they have cool abilities?
3: Do I like them?
4: If one died, would I miss them?

But I stop there and just kill the jerk, because he was unwilling to follow my commands.

I suck at a couple of things.

First of all, I suck at any FPS that doesn't have either a near god-like health bar or a stealth option. If I'm too squishy and can't sneak, I simply cannot do it.

Second, I am too impatient in turn-based games. I get bored too easily and end up messing something up while waiting for something else to occur.

Finally, Micro management. I'm okay with a little bit of it, but good god I will not do every little thing in order to win as fast as possible.

I tend to go for good results in what I do (protect as many NPCs, get as much gold etc.), but I flip inconsistently between rushing and taking it slow.

In games like Oblivion rushing often gets me butchered by the ridiculously death-resistant enemies while in MMSes (excluding Black Ops II) I often die for trying to be slower with my 'work'.

Spending money and using health items in any game, with the notable exception of Dark Souls.

There's always a moment in the game where I'll see something I want to buy and think, "No. Save the money. Something good will come along later." Then it doesn't and I'm stuck with a Steel Sword while my enemy is caving my skull in with his +8 Axe of Awesomeness. Of course, on the rare occasions where I do spend money to buy better equipment, something better comes along that I can't buy because I spent my money on the last thing! It drives me crazy!

Health items are weird. I always manage to get out of a situation without using them, thinking I'll need them later. Then, lo and behold, I end up having about 40 of them, making the boss fight too easy because I can heal after every single attack. The only reason I'd need that many is if I'd go after the super difficult, optional boss battles, who has an attack that can kill me in one hit so they're useless anyway!

The only reason Dark Souls is different is because farming for souls is second nature to me now, and I know I can get to a bonfire to refill my health items. Go figure.

In RPGs, I actively avoid the main quest at all costs. I usually end up being way overpowered by the time the final boss. In addition, I frequent wikis for any game I play just so I don't miss anything. I also have a strange habit of going the completely opposite direction in RPGs just because I don't want to miss anything.

I'm a hopeless romantic at heart.

Give me a good RPG story with a good romance and I will do all in my power to pursue it no matter the cost. I will always trying to get the women in question to change their ways in case they are denying the love I'm trying to offer(I rarely do the romances when playing a female char, exception was Liara with my FemShep).

A few examples are Morrigan from Dragon Age Origins, Viconia from Baldur's Gate 2, Aribeth from Neverwinter Nights, Triss from Witcher.

Not all of them fill the same criteria like I've stated above, but I think you will understand my meaning.

Remembering combos longer than 2 buttons, QTEs because my hand-eye coordination sucks and I don't tend to notice them in a cutscene, and finishing a game most of the time.

Stealth. Because I'm an impatient bastard.

Most of Deus Ex and HR, devolved into shooting every level, and i'm constantly getting spotted in Metal Gear.

Dishonored has been the best for me though. Blink takes care of my impatience :)

I have to second the map thing, which isn't just a gaming issue for me, but a real-life one was well.

Also, getting up close will always be a problem for me. Whether it's a FPS or Skyrim, I will always try to keep enemies at a distance, because when they get too close, I get too excited and tend to confuse buttons which at that point I should have memorized perfectly.

I also have the urge to complete everything in a game. So much so that I have two copies of Boktai just to get to the top of the whatsitcalled tower to fight the Silvery-White Knight. I also have a really bad habit of exploring every single area really thoroughly. In Dungeon Siege 1, after I completed the game, I went all the way back from the final boss area to my home farm, completing the map on the way. And I found so many secret areas! I love games like that, there's nothing I like more in a game than secret areas and stuff. If anyone can recommend games like that I would thank you, I haven't played a good one since DS1 and that was going on 10 years ago ;_;
