In no particular order, let's see if I can remember them all

Game Boy*
Game Boy Color*
Pikachu Game Boy*
Game Boy Advance*
GBA SP *
Game Gear
NES*
SNES
Genesis*
PSOne
PS2*
PS3*
Xbox
Xbox 360 (had 2 of the grey ones)
Xbox 360 Elite* (love this console)
DS Lite*
Wii*
Gamecube*
N64*

* = Still have to this day. Most of them are in my apartment now.

I used to be pretty impressed by my collection over the years. After reading some of these lists I realize that for the Escapist, I'm right around the middle.

Ooh. Tough one. Especially the early history.

First computer in my household was a Mac Classic. But that was borrowed.

Later we got a PC, I got an Snes, then a pair (they were identical) of atari home computers. They were old, second hand, and I'm not sure of the exact model. (Probably atari 800's, but they had tape drives so... Eh).

From there...
PC + N64

At some point I got a game boy colour, then a GBA SP.

More PC's...

A Wii.

Even more PC's...

Finally a Wii U.

Currently then I own 2 PC's (not counting 2 more old junk ones), a Wii U, and I still own my GBC, and GBA, and a replacement N64 (because the original one I owned was stolen).

So... Looking back on it, apart from the very early days, it's fairly consistently been a PC + Nintendo console.
Eh. Nothing really changes that much then I guess. XD

Amiga 500

SNES. My cousin was selling his and it had Streetfighter II on it.

Gameboy. Can't really recall, didn't have it very long.

Playstation. A mate of mine had one and Worms was awesome.

N64. Goldeneye.

PC. For music programmes and University

PS2. Playstation was obsolete so bought the new version.

I now own a PC.

I will not be buying another console.

The first console system I had was the Sega Genesis. I had been aware and comfortable with the NES and SNES, but I really wanted to play Sonic & Knuckles; so my first console was a Sega Genesis.

Following the Sega Genesis, me and my sibling got the N64 for a later Christmas. It was a console that a family member of mine had and we wanted one as well. What was cool was that this was the start of our larger family having similar consoles (previously, we were divided between the Sega Genesis and SNES), which allowed us to borrow and play a variety of games.

The next console I purchased myself was the Playstation 2. Although I was skeptical, since I wasn't too impressed with disk games freezing and loading on the PS1, I really liked the graphics of this next-gen system, as well as many of its exclusives. It is still one of my favorite consoles that I play games to this day.

Finally, my current console (until I purchase a WiiU and/or PS4), is the PS3. Again, graphics and exclusives is what drove me to make this purchases, as well as the built-in Blu-Ray player and a replaceable HDD, since I have like 3 memory cards worth of game saves on the PS2, and I would surely want to upgrade later.

My own first real console was a SNES my uncle gave me because he moved out when I was around 2. I played on grandparents PCs all through my childhood though. Hell, Doom 2 was my first game I played with my grandpa. From there it went
SNES>N64>PS2>360>PC

I also owned a playstation and a xbox, but they were secondary consoles to the N64 (which I still have) and my ps2.

As for why? SNES was given to me as a present when I was 2. N64 was a present for Christmas of 98 (came with OoT!), PS2 because FFX, 360 because...I can't remember. PC because I was worried about the future of consoles last Christmas and decided to take advantage of the good deals I found to get a good PC to last me the next gen. I may purchase a WiiU in the future if there's a price drop and I can afford it.

I originally started out with a Nintendo 64. When I was a kid I saw the lunchables add with Donkey Kong 64 on the back and I REALLY liked monkeys so I begged my parents for the system.

After that when it was time for an upgrade, my dad got me a PlayStation 2. Loved that thing to pieces and got all sorts of Digimon games, and RPGs.

Around that same time I saw Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness, and because at the time I didn't really have my own Pokemon game, So I got the Pokemon XD special Gamecube.

Shortly afterwards, my mom made me give away my PlayStation 2 to my much older cousin. Last time I saw it (which was 9 years ago) it went from being in pristine condition, to being in the most abysmal state I have ever seen a console. The cords were exposed, the power cord in the back sparked when it turned on (Yes, an actual spark- sparks not just a spark) and the home menu wasn't even operational. The only thing we could do was play the game.

From that point on it was just me and my Gamecube. The times I had on that little cube. I don't regret that choice.

Now I have a Wii (Gamecube is still here), but I got it late in the game, but I still played some pretty solid titles on it.

I was planning on getting a PS4 along with a Wii U, but the pay for online aspect really turned me off. So I'm probably just going to stick with PC and Wii U this gen (unless of course they drop that online requirement.)

As for handhelds-
I first owned a Gameboy Color. My very first game was Woody Woodpecker and Tom & Jerry (yeah I know, give me a break I was fucking 6)
I should note that I did play a Gameboy for a little bit. My childhood friend had it. At the time I had no idea that a Game Boy existed, and I was really intrigued by it.

After that I got a Gameboy Advance. This was the first handheld where I finally got my first Pokemon Game- Firered.

Then I got a Gameboy SP. It was later forcefully given away (again) by my mom. Later learned that the kid she gave it two got it stolen in a matter of two weeks.

Finally got a Nintendo DS lite, after hearing that Diamond and Pearl were going to be DS exclusives.

Upgraded to a DSi when my DS lite was starting to be too worn down (still have it though for the advance games)

And now finally I just recently traded in my DSi for a 3DS because I knew for a fact that they were no longer going to make games for the original DS line.
Don't regret it one bit.

if your talking systems you've owned, not just played.. then my list is small. since i've been unable to afford many systems in my life.. all too expensive. my first was a used Atari 7800.. then i got the Playstation... then the N64, then Gamecube and finally the PS3 slim.. ive played most of the other systems that have come out at friends houses, just couldn't afford to buy them. and i only owned 1 system per generation, again, cause of the cost... my next will be the PS4.. when the price drops, or i save up for it, whichever comes first...

reacap : Atari 7800 -> Playstation -> N64 -> Gamecube -> PS3 Slim

1988 - NES - my first console, a christmas present

1991 - Mega Drive/CD - my second console, which I would end up using well into the 5th generation, alongside ...

1994? - PC (Mac PowerPC 603e) - for most of my teens this was my gaming pc, even though it was a Mac and there wasn't a whole lot of games available. the lack of 3d acceleration really hurt it once games like Unreal came along.

1999 - PC (P3 450GHz, RIVA TNT 2) - a decent machine I got for college. Not a full-fledged gaming rig though, so it got outdated pretty quickly.

2003 - PC (P4 3000GHz, Radeon 9800XT) - this was an absolute beast back then it and served me well until the 7th console gen started and it could no longer keep up, leading to me buying a ...

2006 - PS3 - First console since 1991, a 60gb fat model with the juicy full backwards compatibility so I could sample some of the stuff I missed in the last two generations.

2008 - NDS - I wanted a handheld to make those commutes pass by a little faster.

2008 - PSP - I added a second handheld because why not?

2008-12 Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, N64 & GBA - all systems I got secondhand over the course of the 7th gen so I could play what I missed that my PS3 wouldn't let me.

2012 - Xbox360 - Got it late in the 7th gen for the exclusives.

2013 - Wii - Friend wanted to get rid of it, so I took it off his hands.

2013 - 3DS - I'd grown quite fond of Nintendo handheld by now, so I got this a couple months ago.

2013 - Laptop (i7 3360k, GTX660m) - Meant for work, so gaming was just an added benefit, but it does quite well. It's mostly for indie games anyway, so I don't really need a powerhouse.

Still I fail to see why anyone would have just a gaming PC, sure emulators are a choice, but what about the pleasures of owning a system and games. Plus Emulation isn't a hundred per cent on most systems (with the Sega Saturn being a big one), and you would run into a boatload of problems (especially PS2 and above).

Collecting is one of the most magical things about console gaming, and it just saddens me that some people out there don't even give it the time or day. Plus console gaming is a great way to play old PC games that are not on GOG, and don't work on a modern day OS, or require a lot of fiddling to get working.
Well, maybe they just like PC games? I mean, you could easily say "I fail to see why anyone would just have consoles" because they'd have missed out on PC-exclusive classics like the Infinity Engine Games, the Ultima series, the original Unreal (not Unreal Tournament, that came out on consoles), Jazz Jackrabbit, ************! I mean, there were and are tons of wonderful PC-only games out there.

Also, emulation has come a long way. I almost never touch my real Wii or Gamecube anymore because I can play the same games in HD on my PC. Most PS2 games are fine, too. The Saturn is a bit baffling, though. The original Xbox is in an even worse state, emulator-wise! I want mah HD Otogi, dammit!

Anyway, I have owned (or at least, my family has owned):

Master System (from way before I was born)
Mega Drive (from more or less when I was born)
PS1
Dreamcast
Gamecube
Xbox
PS2
Xbox 360
PS3
Wii
Game Boy Colour
Game Boy Advance
PSP
DS
3DS

And I've always owned a PC . Although, until this generation my PC was always behind the curve a little.

My first console, the GameCube, I got for my sixth birthday. Then I got a GBA SP which I lost in a move, and then (a couple years after) I got a PSP and a DS Lite, which finishes out all the handhelds I owned. Then I got a Wii about four months after its release, an Xbox 360 for Christmas, a PS3 two years later, and a second 360 one year after that (Arcade for $200, since I already had a hard drive), not because I got the three red ring error, but because it wouldn't transmit video anymore. Sometime in between that I bought an N64 during a phase where I was obsessed with The Legend of Zelda (which, you know, isn't necessarily a bad thing to obsess over).

I'm not going to lie, I'm not old enough to work without special papers, and I feel spoiled. Bleh.

At first it was just simple PC games like the Jumpstart games, Tradewinds, and a few small flash games. When I got my GBA in '01 I moved away from most of that. A few years later my brothers and I got a PS2 and we played on that most of the time until we got an Xbox 360 about four or five years ago. I mostly use the 360 these days, though every now and then I jump on the PS2 for a bit. My brother and I do plan on getting a PS3 once the PS4 launches and the price drops.

Intel Core 2 Q6600 Quadcore PC

Everything from the Atari to the PSOne were either a family computer or birthday presents, everything else is mine. In chronological order (of course):

Gameboy
PS1
N64
(at this point I owned my first console: Gameboy Colour)
GBA
PS2 (probably my favourite)
Wii
Xbox 360

Probably going to stick with PC gaming. I'm still very much into handhelds, and will be getting a 3DS XL this week. Monster Hunter, ho!!

*The first controller I held. Did I play the games? Barely. All I remember is that one Sonic game.
