NES->Snes and Genesis->N64->PS1->PC/PS2->PS3 and PSP

Yeah I owned both the Genesis and the Snes at the same time i was lucky on that count although the Genesis had less game i liked due to sega being very much sport centric in their game.

I started with my brother and sister's old Atari 2600 when I was 6, then I got a N64 and Sega Genesis, then I got a PS2, then I got a 360 and PS3.

Started on some version of Atari. Not sure which one.
After that on to the NES.
Then one day I come home from school and my mom tells me she got my brother something called a SUPER Nintendo. I was enthralled.
I pretty much followed Nintendo right down the line till the PlayStation came out, upon which time I primarily moved to that. Played the PS2 and Xbox, Xbox being my preferred console for the game selection. We had a Gamecube for about 2 years and it was fun for a handful of games.

Many years later I purchased the 360, probably 4-5 years after it's initial release. Loved that thing, played it all the time. It didn't even make it a full year before shitting out though, so that was the end of the 360 for me. (Actually it was that + finding out first hand what Microsofts customer service help is like)

After that I defaulted back to my PS2 which held me over for quite some time before getting a PS3 probably 1 1/2 years later. And right now it's looking like PS4 will be a purchase in the distant future, so staying with Sony for now.

Let's see:

My Dad got me both the NES/SNES when I was a little too young to engage with them properly, so those technically wouldn't count, although I did rediscover them later on. After that he got be a Mega Drive II as a Christmas gift when I was 5, which is to this day my favourite console.

After that it went something like this:

Gameboy
Game Gear
Nintendo 64
Playstation
Dreamcast
PS2
- owned about 6 from then 'til now.
Xbox 360 - Only because it was the cheaper option, but I've grown to love it.

I've owned and still own others, but the bulk of my gaming was done on these consoles.

Sadly, these past few years I've had little time to play games thanks to work and further education, only buckling down when certain titles became available (I was lucky enough to fall sick when Gears of War 3 hit shelves, best sick week in a while). Right now I'm experimenting with what titles can run on my Ultrabook (Morrowind on Steam has me mesmerised right now) and I've just been gifted with a PS3 by a friend's dad who doesn't play it anymore.

that's about it, all hail the glorious PC gaming master race
Well...I take pity on you, because you missed out on a fuckton of great games, and I own a gaming PC as well.
of course not, just saying what I owned, innit. I caught up with most classics eventually anyway
Still I fail to see why anyone would have just a gaming PC, sure emulators are a choice, but what about the pleasures of owning a system and games. Plus Emulation isn't a hundred per cent on most systems (with the Sega Saturn being a big one), and you would run into a boatload of problems (especially PS2 and above).

Collecting is one of the most magical things about console gaming, and it just saddens me that some people out there don't even give it the time or day. Plus console gaming is a great way to play old PC games that are not on GOG, and don't work on a modern day OS, or require a lot of fiddling to get working.

In approximate order:

Apple II
Windows 95
Gameboy Color
N64
Windows 98
Gameboy Advance
Gamecube
Windows XP
Xbox 360
Windows 7
Nintendo DS

I'm not going to buy any next-gen consoles unless the next Zelda game looks AMAZING, and my PC will last me a while considering that I have little to no interest in most new games that call for high-end hardware.

My earliest gaming memories were with the Atari 2600, Commodore Vic-20, and an Atari 65XE.
I then got a Gameboy when i was 8, and was saving every penny i could get to buy an NES, but my idiot dad got me an Amstrad GX4000 because in his opinion it was better (i was 8 i wanted to play Super Mario Bros)
i spent quite a lot of time playing Sega Megadrive, Super Nintendo, and with an 8086 PC, to which i started learning about PCs.
Since the age of 14 (as of 1996) i've upgraded a lot of times: (Thanks to cheap second hand parts)
8086 > 80286 > 80386 > 80486 > a few pentium CPUs > and from 1999, i've been using AMD CPUs for my built computers
AMD K6-III, Duron 750, Athlon XP 1800, Athlon 64 2800, Athlon 64 3700, and to the CPU i've been using for the last 4 years, an AMD Phenom II x4 955BE

I got a Playstation in 1997, then from 2001 i bought a Gameboy Advance, a Nintendo DS, and a DS Lite,
i used to own a PSP but it didn't have the games i wanted to play so i didn't keep it for long.

I've bought a number of 2nd hand consoles i wanted: N64, Dreamcast, NES, Gamegear, PS2, Gamecube.
i bought a Wii, didn't keep that for too long
i've bought a Xbox about 2 months after launch, and i also bought the 360 about a month after launch, that one had the 3 Red lights and was given a replacement which i sold much much later to buy a quieter model, and i've still got that.
i have a PS3 (2nd hand) and a few games for it.
Bought a Tapwave Zodiac 2, an nGage QD and more recently a 3DS which is my most fave handheld game console yet
oh and i've also got an iPad 2 which i sometimes play games on

before anyone thinks i'm loaded or rich (i WISH) i'm not, kind of a Right place at the right time sort of thing
Hope i've not bored any of you with my reply xD

First one I can remember having is the good ol' Atari 2600. As the youngest of three brother's, my older brothers were already playing it by the time I was born so my personal memories of playing it as a kid are vague and foggy at best. From there we went to the NES, like most people, and that one I have a lot more fond memories of. Next came the SNES because we enjoyed the NES so much.

Now, having played Sonic 2 over at a friend's house and loving the crap out of it, I begged for a Genesis for my birthday or Christmas. Finally got one and it became basically a machine to play Sonic games on...don't think I ever got anything other than Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles for it. :p

Up next was the N64. We were definitely a Nintendo household for the most part. And come on, Mario Kart 64 and Golden Eye 64 are the greatest games in the history of console gaming and I refuse to hear anyone saying otherwise! We had a decent 64 collection and eventually picked up a Playstation because a friend of mine brought his over so he could show us FF7. My oldest brother was a huge FF fan and so he decided to get a Playstation and the PS FF's were the primary reason for owning one, though we did have some other games for it as well.

Next up was a Dreamcast which was actually purchased by my mother. Funny story, that. We were on a road-trip to a big soccer tournament that one of my brothers was playing in and my mother rented a Dreamcast to play in the hotel room. She only rented one game with it: Crazy Taxi. We all enjoyed the crap out of it, having a lot of fun being...well...a crazy taxi driver. We had so much fun that when we got home from the trip, my mother decided to go ahead and buy a Dreamcast........and not get Crazy Taxi. Instead we got an absolutely atrocious snowboarding game and some horrendously designed spy team game that I forget the name of. We eventually got a couple fighting games for it and I picked up the last Sonic game I've ever played: Sonic Adventure 2. While it wasn't the best Sonic game in the world, I still had fun with it. And the song that plays during the final boss fight is frickin' awesome, so I personally give that game a pass.

Of course we picked up a PS2 like everyone else. My 2nd oldest brother liked the GTA games for it while I was still - just barely - trudging along with the FF series. I got FFX for Christmas and had a lot of fun with it...before realizing that I liked the minigame Blitz-Ball more than the actually game and it's ear-bleeding voice acting. Upon beating the game and seeing the lunacy of a main boss fight that you literally can't lose unless you kill yourself...twice...well I was just about done with the FF franchise. I only rented FFX-2 because it was a direct sequel to an FF game and that was something unheard of at the time. I ended up taking it back about 3 hours later and haven't played a new FF since.

I eventually picked up an Xbox, though I can't remember why...I was never a huge fan of the Halo franchise and actually think is was more so I could play the Dead or Alive series. As a horny 15 year old nerd at the time, I fully admit that I liked the bouncy-bouncy. BUT! But I also have a legitimate reason for liking the series! It was the only fighting game franchise that I could beat my brothers at due to it's fighting system of hit beats throw, throw beats counter, counter beats hit. Having grown up getting my ass kicked in Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat by my older brothers, it was fun to finally be able to kick their ass in something. :p

Which brings us to the current generation in which I went 360. Online play with your friends was now a true achievable thing and all my friends had 360s, so the choice was pretty obvious. Ahhhh, the glory days of the early 360. CoD4: Modern Warfare is still the best of the bunch if you ask me. 3 Kill Streaks: a UAV, an Airstrike, and a Chopper...that's all you needed and it was perfectly fine. Now you try to play CoD and it's less about what you as a soldier can do and more about filling the sky with 30 different things that can kill your opponents before they even know what the hell happened. I was actually half-way good at the first Modern Warfare...but then they just kept adding to it...and adding to it...and adding to it. Now it's just not fun any more because some of the perks became mandatory. If you don't have a way to mask yourself from all the Death From Above killstreaks out there, you're going to be dying...a lot.

As for next gen, I'm sure as hell not getting an XBone so long as the Kinect is still attached to it. But at this point that's the only complaint I have left against it since they got rid of the used game restrictions and DRM and such. Chop out the Kinect (which will lower the price) and I'd actually probably go with the XBone just because Sony has a history of security breaches as seen with the PS3. So at the moment, I'm leaning mostly towards PS4, though in all honest there is a good chance I might just save up to get myself a good gaming PC and abandon the consoles all together.

Edit: Just thought I'd mention some of the handhelds too. I had a Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advanced. Also had a Game Gear. :p

I've been constantly fascinated by the decades long failure to get Saturn emulation right; I was keeping an eye on it when I wanted to get NiGHTS working, but a few aborted attempts later it still doesn't seem to be there. What's the story - is it weird custom chips that nobody can figure out or something? I know part of the problem was lack of interest; while there's tons of people interested in most of the library of something like a PS1 or a SNES, the Saturn interest seems to have amounted to "NiGHTS and Radiant Silvergun"... (I finally gave up and got NiGHTS off the XBLA.)

Saga Master System - very young, got form uncle for free with like 50 games. - Surprise

Saga Megadrive - Christmas present a couple of years later. - Surprise

Saga Saturn - Christmas present a couple of years later. - Surprise

Playstation - Christmas present a couple of years later. - Wanted

Started PC gaming (crappy PC's). - Self decision.

Gameboy - Birthday or Christmas present. - Wanted

N64 - Birthday or Christmas present. - Surprise

Gameboy Colour - Birthday or Christmas present. - Wanted

PS2 - Birthday or Christmas present. - Wanted

Gameboy Advanced - Birthday or Christmas present. - Surprise

Xbox - Birthday or Christmas present. - Wanted

Xbox 360 - chosen over PS3 due to cheaper, having better release games and having more promised exclusives that I actually wanted. Was still a Christmas present but it was a self picked present.

Real Gaming PC - Self made from self brought parts, finally decided to take my PC gaming all the way.

Probably going to end up with a PS4.

Do you have the... Pioneer Laseractive, Nuon, Halcyon, Bandia Playdia, Casio Loopy, PC-FX, Apple Bandai Pippin, Atari Jaguar/Jaguar CD, Amiga CD-32, Neo Geo CDZ, Neo Geo CD, Neo Geo AES, 3DO (FZ-1, FZ-10, Goldstar, Sanyo Try), Phillips CD-I (the many Different versions), Commodore C64GS, MB Vectrex, Fairchild Channel F, RCA Studio II, Interton AC-4000, Casio PV1000, Amstrad GX4000, Daewood Zemmix, Memorex VIS, FM Towns Marty, Capcom CPS Changer, Sony PSX, Techtoy Zeebo, Sega SG-1000, Vtech Creativision, Epoch Cassettevision, Sega 32X, Sharp Twin Famicom/Famicom Disk System, Nintendo BS-X Satellaview, Atari XE, Atari 5200, Panasonic Q, Ouya, IQue, Virtual Boy, Sega Wondermega/Multimega/X-Eye, Commodore CD-TV, Nintendo 64DD, Action Max, Supergrafx, Tomy Pyuuta jr.

If you have even half of these, i would be damn impressed. All of them, then i would refer you to the nearest medical clinic for extreme OCD problems.

I confess you did get me on a few. That is indeed an impressively obscure list. I do confess ignorance to more than a couple of those entries.

What I should have stated first off was consoles sold in the US. So yes to most of these like Jaguar, Pippin, Neo Geo, My "CD-i" was a magnavox model. A5200,XE, Fairchild, Virtuaboy, Studio 2,Action Max etc etc etc

So I confess I was not including a sizable chunk of this list.

Things such as the Famicoms, SG-1000, Capcom CP1&2, etc. that were never sold in US markets.

I did not include duplicates and clones such as the various "famicom" versions, Various CD-I's each NeoGeo Rehash, though I had representation from both of the latter as stated above.

I did not think to include "bolt ons" such as the PSX which was just a PS2 w/ DVR and multimedia capacity built in or the N64DD which essentially was little more than an extra HDD included. Or the Q which was a gamecube Plus DVD playback.

Also there were a couple I really would not even truly classify as consoles as they were more in the vein of computers that just so happened to have the capacity to run some proprietary games. Things for example like the Zemmix, Memorex, or any of the Commodore lines.

So I do confess you got me on quite a few of those. Outside of the Clones, Bolt ons, Personal computers, and what was not made available in the US I "think" the only thing that would still fall under consideration would be the LaserActive and Ouya. The LA was an overpriced abomination that you cant quite classify as a console because it functionally ran as a partial emulator, partially as a "video receiver" to be a hub in a larger home stereo component type system. On the Ouya I do not have it as of yet but have always had intention of it being an eventuality.

None the less, thanks. I learned a few things out of this. I stand corrected and cheerfully withdrawn.

I think it's something to do with the Motherboard architecture making Emulation hard or Impossible. Main reason why they haven't even ported Saturn games on consoles as well. PS2 emulation is pretty much the same, You are either going to run into Frame Rate issues, or Texture issues, even if your PC is totally beefed up with everything.

Well now, from the top...

Old old comp running DOS shell on... was it Windows 386? I don't remember. All I remember were that the "pixels" were about the size of the mouse cursor. Good times - I owned at Space Invaders, though my elder brother owned at Paganitzu.
Anyway, comp has always been there in one form or another. The actual boxes get a little hazy, but I remember having about two or three. I'm on a beefy system of my own now - enough to run my pimped out Skyrim as well as lots of little games I come across.
Consoles, I remember much better. Started on the old Master System, had epic fun with that. Somehow we got Ys on it, despite the fact it was never released in Europe.
From there, we went onto the Mega Drive, had a fair selection of games there and (crazily enough) it's still growing. Not through virtual marketplace or whatnot, actual cartridges. I've got a copy of PS4 in box floating around somewhere.
After that, got into the PS. Ps1 first, had some fun with FF and the Legends (Dragoon and Legaia), then PS2 then PS3. I got a Wii somewhere along the line as well, after the PS3 if I recall.
Handhelds, I've got a 3DS and a PSP.

So, the list is:
Gaming PC (relatively beefy, but not epic)
Master System
Mega Drive
PS1
PS2
PS3
PSP
3DS
Wii

As for the future... eh. I'll probably end up getting a WiiU ('Cause it's easier to justify getting a backwards compatible machine, who knew?) and maybe a PS4 (I've been bitten by KH3 and FFXV. Call me a sucker for a cool gameplay demo.) Never gotten an XBox, not considering it.

EDIT: On the topic of Saturn/PS2 emulation, I think it has to do with the CPU setup - AFAIK, Saturns were the first to use multiple CPUs to get better performance from the games, and as a result most normal comps struggle with the sheer raw data output.

But that's just what I remember. Don't quote me on it.

Ehhh... yes, no maybe so? If you want to look at it in the strictest sense, yes. But to do so you have to ignore the differences in optimization that make the hardware function in fundamentally different ways. Plus its hard to call anything with a built in QWERTY keyboard in the machine as a "console" and not a personal computer.

Very True, some of those are clones (the Daewood Zemmix being a consolized Korean clone of a MSX), Revisions, Add-Ons ect. Though what about the Consolized Home Computers such as the CD-32 C64GS, GX4000, i very much consider them consoles personally, what with them having a few graphical advantages over their computer counterparts. Also The Japanese exclusive consoles are readily available to buy on the net if you know where to look, and thus most western collectors still own them. Gamester81 on youtube has most of them.

The only true good thing about the Laseractive as far as I can tell, is using one of those add-on PC engine/Sega mega Drive packs, which also play Sega CD, and PC engine CD games. Great if you want to justify your expensive purchase of a Laseractive by playing Castlevania Rondo of blood on it.

With regards to the other American systems not mentioned in your post, The Halcyon is considered the rarest console ever made with only four games I believe. The Nuon was a consolized DVD player with a few decent games on it. All the other "vision" consoles went up against the Colecovision and Intellivision, but were not popular in the slightest.

Also 3DO, best Failed console ever!

Umm alright I am not going to include the PC's I have had because I don't remember the details of them that much and I have never considered my PC's gaming platforms as I used them for other things mainly.

NES - I never owned one, but the house I grew up in had one. Super Mario Bros was the first game I ever played.

Sega Genesis - This was my first actually gaming system I owned. I loved the Sonic games on it, but a boy I used to hangout with already owned them so I never actually owned the Sonic games. I only had one game for it, which was this game.

Nintendo 64 - This was the system that got me into gaming as a main hobby. I had a lot of games for this one. Some of my favorites were Diddy Kong Racing, Super Smash Brothers, Star Fox, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64 and Perfect Dark. Mario Kart was probably my favorite game for it. The N64 had my least favorite controller.

Gameboy Colour - I never owned the original Gameboy, so this was my first handheld. My first game was Pokemon Blue and if I can recall I think it was one of my only games, along with Pokemon Silver. I really only liked playing Pokemon games on the handheld back then. I'm still not really into handhelds and I am no longer into Pokemon.

Nintendo Gamecube - Of course I loved the 64 so much I wanted to stay with Nintendo. So I definitely started out as a Nintendo Fan. I fell in love with the Gamecube more than the 64. The Gamecube ranks in my top 3 favorite consoles. Some of my favorite games were Mario Kart Double Dash, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Zelda: Wind Waker and my two favorite games for it were Sonic Adventure Battle 2 and Animal Crossing. To date the Gamecube has been my favorite console in terms of looks, I love the look of it, and I think the controller might also be one of my favorite controllers, along with the PS2 controller.

Gameboy Advanced SP - This was my second handheld and I did really enjoy it. I liked that I could play my colour games on it. My favorite game for this one was Final Fantasy tactics advanced. This along with Crystal Chronicles for Gamecube were my first Final Fantasy games and the ones that got me into the series.

Playstation 2 - One year my mother took me to Disney world in Orlando, Florida. It was there that I got to play Kingdom Hearts, I was actually one of the first people in the world to get to try it before it was released. This made me want to get a Playstation 2. I didn't end up getting one for another few years after that, but I did get one. Another reason I wanted one was because I was getting a little older and wanted to play more mature and different games. As I saw what other people were playing, I came to realise that the Gamecube was for little kids and the PS2 was for big kids. *This is just what I used to think* I didn't actually have as much fun with the PS2 as I did the gamecube however. It wasn't until I rebought it a year ago now that I am older and have come to love the PS2 much more now than I did when I was younger. My favorite games for it are Persona 3 and Resident Evil 4, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Shadow of the Colossus and all things Final Fantasy.

Xbox 360 I was older now and understood how the internet worked much better. I lived on Gamespot a lot before I came over to Escapist in 2009 and I witnessed a console release like I had never done before. I had a choice to make, PS3, Xbox 360 or a Wii. The Wii never had a chance, because I didn't like idea behind the Wii controllers, plus the games didn't interest me as much. I assumed I would get a PS3, because Xbox never really interested me, until one day an Uncle of mine rented Halo for a party he had. I couldn't play the Halo games because I didn't have an Xbox, so I ended up getting an Xbox 360 to play the halo games, plus things like Gears of War. It just looked more fun as a console. The Xbox 360 by far has been my largest library of games and I have loved the console to death. My favorite games have been the Halo Series, Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil 5, Dragon Age, Fallout 3, Skyrim, Red Dead Redmption, Grand Theft Auto IV and Bioshock was my favorite. This system would rank in my top 3 favorite game consoles.

Nintendo DS This is my current handheld. I hate having to buy handhelds these days, but there are games I just want to play for it. Not that many mind you...still I enjoy it for the most part. I wait until they are cheap. I like playing the Final Fantasy remakes on this, but there are still a few games I haven't got to yet.

PS3 I only got the PS3 last year because it was free. Turned out I ended up liking the PS3 library of games more than the Xbox360. It seems everything I liked on 360 I could get for the PS3, except Halo, which I stopped playing after Reach. I also started playing on Steam last year, so my Xbox 360 has collected some dust. My favorite games on the PS3 so far are, Demons Souls, Catherine*kinda*, Heavy Rain, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Valkryie Chronicles and Dead Space.

What does the future hold? Well I am planning on selling my 360 and all my games to get a WiiU. That way I can play any WiiU game in the future I might want to play, and all the Wii games I missed. Like for example, I need Resident Evil REmake and Zero to complete my collection and I would like to play the rest of the Zelda series. I also plan on getting a PS4 when it has been out long enough and...I guess I'll pick up a stupid 3DS one day too, damn handhelds and their tasty Fire Emblems.
