Tie between Excel Saga and FLCL, and that's only because Puni Puni Poemy is an OVA from the Excel guys.

.Hack Sign, and .Hack Roots. Only problem is you miss out of the plot at the end of the series due to the games.
Spice & Wolf
Hellsing, which I'm currently still watching.

Dragon Ball and Dragonball Z...isn't that the correct answer for the whole thread's question? I'm pretty sure it is.
DBZ has to be one of the worst animes ever made. Great story and characters, but it was so, so, so God damn drawn out.

I'm glad Cartoon Network ran it with five episodes a week; I don't know how Japan didn't break into civil war on one episode a week.
But I thought a great story and great characters = great show in general. I agree it is drawn out, but I can look past it because of how bad ass it is
I don't know, this is why I gave up watching animes and stuck to reading mangas.

I think when you can watch it at your leisure it's fine - like with DBZ which is finished - but having to wait sometimes months for an episode just to find out it's a)filler or b)stalling just erodes the interest.

I'd like to add the 1st minute of the show, as honestly, the intro really explains nothing.
haven't seen the show, know nothing about it, but this... THIS is hilarious!

Of everything I've seen, the only ones I finished were Excel Saga, Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbour Totoro, and you can take that however you want.

Tricky question especially since I like a lot of different genres and usually the answer would depend on which I am most into at the time. Also I haven't watched a lot of animes people say are really good. However I think I will give it to the anime I am always in the mood for watching and still haven't ever been bored of, and that is Lucky Star. Runners up would probably be Hellsing Ultimate, To Aru Majutsu no Index (second season is best but I also include the first season and railgun), Azumanga Daioh, and The World God Only Knows, with special mention given to the first 4 or 5 episodes of Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni and the first half of Death Note (I loved those mentioned parts but the rest just couldn't measure up).

For the longest damn time it was The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

I even loved the Endless 8 (Yes that's how crazy I am)

But RIN - Daughters of Mnemosyne was so awesome that it bumped every Anime that I liked down a peg.

If anyone can tell me an Anime that's like that I will worship you!!

Special mention goes to Clannad: After Story. That would have been my favorite if the ending hadn't been the worst ending in the history of crappy endings.

[spoiler-preemptive response to inevitable stupid comment] Before you tell me that I have failed to correctly interpret my own opinion about the end of Clannad. I did not read the source material. So the only experience I have with Clannad is the anime series which was a tragic story about Okazaki punishing himself for how bad his own life is. He found a way to blame every bad thing that happened in his life on himself, since he was such a good guy at heart it was easier to punish himself than to punish anyone else he cared about. The ending was this out of place magical reset button that killed all the emotional weight the last half of the series built up so well.

From what I can gather, in the source material Clannad was more of a story of redemption where Okazaki tries to find happiness. And he explores a number of different dimensions and fixes everyone else's problems in order save Nagisa. The anime series never touched on that subplot and the ending was a last ditch effort to tie the two series together. Now according to some blogs that I've been directed to regarding the matter, this makes perfect sense in context of the anime being a companion to the source. but if you were supposed to see the end coming the last half of the series would have no emotional weight behind it and come across as "dragging on" and "poorly paced" and the series as a whole would have been mildly annoying instead of making me cry like a baby for hours.

That's reasonable, probably why I have all the seasons with me so I never had to wait. Go me!!

Infinite Ryvius - Lord of the Flies on a space battleship. Crushingly depressing, and certainly not for everyone.

Planetes - A near-future hard science fiction series with a social conscience. IMO the best serious SF anime ever made. The lead writer, director, and composer later collaborated on the more popular (and melodramatic) Code Gaess.
Firstly, may I commend you on your taste in anime, especially the two quoted.

Secondly, my god, whenever I recommend Infinite Ryvius to people, get asked to describe it and say 'LotF in space' the number of looks of horror makes me want to cry... damned good series, and very underrated IMO (pretty good soundtrack too, though one track I just cannot find... anywhere, it's really annoying...)

probaly code geass but they might be digging that up for a 3rd seaon which may ruin an other wise perfect ending
From what I heard it will take place in the E.U. front and follow a new group of pilots. I also think code geass is an awesome anime( in case you were wondering)
