Well, the Halo series has always made an impression when I think of good series of games that I love (Own every single one, except for the anniversary edition of Halo:CE).
The Timespitters trilogy is also a prime example of throwing story to the wind, and just giving very fast, action packed fun. The third game had a bit more story to it then it's predecessor (The firsts campaign was just a series of glorified games of capture the flag). Coupled that, with a alarmingly large cast of strange characters (See:Hans and Mister Handy). The game also (To me) invented the practice of including a map creator packaged for consoles. A fourth game hasn't been announced, but the company who made them, Free Radical (now known as Crytek UK) said they began development but stopped. They said they will resume to cevlop TS4 when their is a demand for it. If it means anything, Free Radical was founded by a few ex-rare employees, who also made 007 Golden eye and Perfect Dark, a pretty impressive pedigree.
Iv'e been a fan of the Armored Core series as well. The story isn't that great, but seeing to very large robots, going at it in what seems to be post-apocalyptic New York is pretty sweet. Fully customize able 'AC's, down to the color and emblem you want. The drawbacks, is that their are quite a few games (Like....eight, ranging for the PS1 to the PS3, not to mention the psp exclusive games.) with little to no change in the actual game play between them. Controls are a bit sluggish as well, though they have fixed this a little with its more recent releases.
