Well, the Halo series has always made an impression when I think of good series of games that I love (Own every single one, except for the anniversary edition of Halo:CE).

The Timespitters trilogy is also a prime example of throwing story to the wind, and just giving very fast, action packed fun. The third game had a bit more story to it then it's predecessor (The firsts campaign was just a series of glorified games of capture the flag). Coupled that, with a alarmingly large cast of strange characters (See:Hans and Mister Handy). The game also (To me) invented the practice of including a map creator packaged for consoles. A fourth game hasn't been announced, but the company who made them, Free Radical (now known as Crytek UK) said they began development but stopped. They said they will resume to cevlop TS4 when their is a demand for it. If it means anything, Free Radical was founded by a few ex-rare employees, who also made 007 Golden eye and Perfect Dark, a pretty impressive pedigree.

Iv'e been a fan of the Armored Core series as well. The story isn't that great, but seeing to very large robots, going at it in what seems to be post-apocalyptic New York is pretty sweet. Fully customize able 'AC's, down to the color and emblem you want. The drawbacks, is that their are quite a few games (Like....eight, ranging for the PS1 to the PS3, not to mention the psp exclusive games.) with little to no change in the actual game play between them. Controls are a bit sluggish as well, though they have fixed this a little with its more recent releases.

Jak & Daxter.
Halo.
Mass Effect.
Assassin's Creed.
Portal (provided it actually counts as an ongoing series, and not just "some game and its sequel").

I love 'em all for their own reasons, and I don't think I could stick any one above the rest.

Of course, they are in no particular order and I'd not have to figure that all out and make the other series jealous.

hi just trying to broaden my mind to other game series i might want to try out at some point.
please leave a little description of what the series is about please
Xenogears / Xenosaga

Xenogears is about a guy in what seems to be a fantasy RPG helping out a friend when Giant Mechs attack his town. One of the pilots bails out of a mech, but the mech is mostly unharmed, so the guy climbs in and tries to defend his town... and ends up on a strange and trippy journey to change the fate of the world, mankind as a whole, and correcting mistakes made in his past lives.

Xenosaga is about terrorists trying to steal data stored in a synthetic girls brain. Except it isn't. It's about a guy trying to build a robot body for a goddess to be reborn into. Except it isnt. It's about the nature of belief and reality, and how when people lose hope they lose themselves. .... ... and turn into Cthulian horrors and/or Gnostic Angels (same difference). Except it isn't. What it's actually about is being a three-video game replacement for the five minute opening animation of Xenogears, except unlike the opening of Xenogears, Xenosaga actually explains shit. Sort of. A little.

If you want to play a game series where the plot is VERY well written, very complex, but also tripping absolute balls, then play Xenogears/Xenosaga for the PS1/PS2 respectively.

Or, better yet, play Xenogears, Xenosaga 1, and Xenosaga 3, pausing in the middle to watch the cut-scenes from Xenosaga 2 on YouTube (because the combat in that game is annoying as fuck).

Baldur's Gate. Definitely Baldur's Gate.

I know someone else has mentioned it already, but I cannot go on enough about how great this game series is. It was made by Bioware (in case you didn't know the guys who did Mass Effect and Dragon Age, both of which I know have been mentioned earlier as well) and it has the same epic story, great humor, and typical awesomeness which made those games great as well.

It uses AD&D style gameplay for the combat, which can be confusing and hard to get used to at first. You will die. That's life. But even the most challenging moments were fun for me as I tried to figure out the best way to take down a certain group of enemies.

But mostly you need to play it for the story. There are tons of side quests and the story quest itself is very well written (if a little bit typical at times), the NPC's have great characters and great interactions, there are surprises and easter eggs everywhere, and there is a guy. With a hamster.

Also, I don't know about the first one, but BG2 has an amazing mod community.

And if your worried about how it has aged (I forget when the first one came out but it was over 10 years ago now) it's actually held up fairly well. It still looks decent thanks to the way the background environment graphics were designed, the gameplay is fun and challenging, and the story is great. So if you feel like wasting days of your life on something, give it a shot.

Sorry, had to get that out.

OT: If was avatar didn't say enough, it's the Persona series. Excluding 1 and 2 because I have never played them and I heard they weren't anything special compared to 3 and 4.

They're just so unique compared to other games on the market. P3 was heavily focused on Greek mythology while P4 was was focused on Japanese mythology. Both games have excellent characters, stories, music, and gameplay.

I think they're just perfect.

X-Com. Its without a doubt my absolute favorite franchise out there with extremely deep, strategic, and challenging mechanics. If you're not aware X-Com is a game where you take control of an international organization tasked with stopping alien activity on earth.

There are two basic parts to the game. The first is the geosphere where you can watch earth nad pick up UFO's coming in to do things whether they be alien infiltration, base building, or terrorism missions. The other part is what I call the battlesphere where you control a group of soldiers to wipe out the aliens and steal their stuff. You can research alien technology, corpses, and interrogate captured aliens as well as manufacture all of their gear

The basic mission types include Assualting a landed UFO (that can be whole or one you shot down with an interceptor) and killing the aliens and capturing all of its gear, Assaulting an alien base, stopping the aliens from hurting civilians, and having your base assaulted.

I have a fair few favourite series, so I may end up spoiler-ing the reasons just so that it isn't too long

Definitely a love it or hate it series it seems but Hideo Kojima and his team seem to make games that I can't help but love (yes even Sons Of Liberty). Even with the epicly long cutscenes, awkward controls and a frankly ridiculous plot, I find this series brilliant and the games have some of the best bosses of all time. The End, The Boss and Liquid Ocelot at the end of MGS4 to name a few.

Now if this was about a decade ago, I don't think this choice would have been nearly as "controversial". But even now, with game after game being slammed, I still love this series to pieces. This was the series that got me started in gaming, after all. But I can't bring myself to hate a game in the series - not even Sonic '06. Hopefully, if the mini-revival Sonic has been on continues, this will be less controversial, shameful etc

My god, the hours I have put into these games are unreal. Admittedly, the amount has waned while I've been on consoles more and more, but I still find a shit-load of time to put into each Pokemon game I play. The only thing I would want Pokemon to do (like nearly everyone else who is a fan of the series) is for a handheld-style game done on the console.

Admittedly, besides Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, I didn't actually play very many of these until my teens. But when I did, I fell in love with the series. From the old "It's dangerous to go alone. Take this." to Groose's theme going with everything (which it does!) I have loved pretty much every game in the series, with Wind Waker being my personal favourite.

I didn't even like Dead Rising at first. Hell, I hated it to begin with. But I swore I wouldn't let that annoying Isabela boss bit beat (alliteration!) me and after I persevered with that it drew me in and the sequel made sure I would hold the series fondly in my heart. There's just something brilliantly cathartic in beating zombies with dildos or walking into a serious cutscene with a dress and dinosaur mask on. And I'm a sucker for puns.

I'm not 100% sure why I actually love this series. That's not to say that there isn't anything good about it and that I'm just inexplicably in love with it, like a fourteen year old girl loving Justin Beiber. It's just that there's so many reasons why, I can't pinpoint a main one. It could be the brilliant story. It could be the voice acting from, well pretty much everyone, but including Seth Green, Keith David and Martin Sheen. It could be Mordin's magnificent singing. It could be because Isaac Newton is the deadliest son of a ***** in space. It could be the reporter punching. All I know is that waiting for Mass Effect 3 is the most excited I have been for a game in a long time, and possibly ever.

There we go, I shall stop there, before I end up not being able to stop. There are plenty other deserving series that should be up there (Saints Row, Hitman, CoD(!) etc) but I shall stop now by saying that that was a lot more nostalgic than I thought it would end up being and that I probably used the word "love" far more times than was necessary.

The Elder Scrolls, Pokemon, Grand Theft Auto, Little Big Planet... But if I had to pick one, I'd say Metal Gear.

The Persona series.

I love most of the Shin Magami games but the Persona games are my fav. Persona was the first RPG that i was able to get into as a kid. I loved the fact it took place in modern day earth. I loved the emphisis on magic (persona) use and i especially loved that you could talk to the monsters and get them to help you.

The series has only gotten more intresting over time. The addition of social links would have been nice on there own but combined with some seriously good writing and they become a reason to give persona 4 a try all on its own.

You can keep your buster swords and your limit breaks. Just give me my Velvet Room.

Mother. All three games have made me cry like a little girl, while loving the appropriate amount of challenge the game provides your level progression. Couple that with emotional weight, an unparalleled sense of humor, fantastic opponents, and mechanics that have aged better than French wines and cheeses, and all three titles remain solid. Hard to match a caliber and record like that.
