Borderlands 2
The reason for is the writing was hilariously enjoyable, the combat satisfying, the trophies approachable and reasonable (Cept Jinkens), and I've enjoyed the game so much.
That and Skyrim (now patched) and Minecraft aren't entries.
Runners Up: Dishonored, Civ 5 Gods and Kings,
Popular games I'm against game of the year.
Dragon's Dogma: I enjoyed this game but the ending was horrible. There were a number of ways they could have made it better but it boiled down to a cultural difference in Japan that might be a resurrection but here in the West it is a body snatching and really a screw you. Pitty because I loved that game until then.
XCom: Just because it is the best we got in its genre (I'm sure someone will correct me on that) doesn't mean it is actually good. Keep in mind I loved this game, why probably has more to do with the genre than the game itself. Yet the games concepts, gameplay, and story are all incredibly stupid.
Example you are using a sat uplink to only control 2 satellites so apparently they gave you what was left over from Voyager. Or how you have the best military personnel from around the world and they shoot worse than a Redneck! No nations Army appears capable of doing anything despite the fact they are in real life, the aliens invasion strategy is non existent considering if they would launch two major attacks simultaneously instead of abductions the victory would have been assured or attacked the Xcom base that they could locate by following any unit we brought back to it since they and I kid you not have a hive mind but if that doesn't work for you then all that alien crap we turned on. I'm actually looking forward to the indi successor to XCom.
