I'd have to say either Guild Wars 2 or Dark Souls (although it was released last year in December). Borderlands 2 lost its chance when LAN was impossible.

I would argue Mass Effect 3 , because everyone in the gaming community has been exposed to it, discussed it, and has an opinion on it. Whether you liked it or not, it's existence and the lessons developers learn from it, WILL effect game development for the future.

Borderlands 2

The reason for is the writing was hilariously enjoyable, the combat satisfying, the trophies approachable and reasonable (Cept Jinkens), and I've enjoyed the game so much.

That and Skyrim (now patched) and Minecraft aren't entries.

Runners Up: Dishonored, Civ 5 Gods and Kings,

Popular games I'm against game of the year.

Dragon's Dogma: I enjoyed this game but the ending was horrible. There were a number of ways they could have made it better but it boiled down to a cultural difference in Japan that might be a resurrection but here in the West it is a body snatching and really a screw you. Pitty because I loved that game until then.

XCom: Just because it is the best we got in its genre (I'm sure someone will correct me on that) doesn't mean it is actually good. Keep in mind I loved this game, why probably has more to do with the genre than the game itself. Yet the games concepts, gameplay, and story are all incredibly stupid.

Example you are using a sat uplink to only control 2 satellites so apparently they gave you what was left over from Voyager. Or how you have the best military personnel from around the world and they shoot worse than a Redneck! No nations Army appears capable of doing anything despite the fact they are in real life, the aliens invasion strategy is non existent considering if they would launch two major attacks simultaneously instead of abductions the victory would have been assured or attacked the Xcom base that they could locate by following any unit we brought back to it since they and I kid you not have a hive mind but if that doesn't work for you then all that alien crap we turned on. I'm actually looking forward to the indi successor to XCom.

Right now, XCOM EU is sapping my small amount of free time.

Mass Effect 3 is a close second, but I haven't touched it since I beat it.

nothing else has really tickled my fancy

I'd have to say Dragon's Dogma so far. I played it religiously for a couple of months. I put down Portal 2 and Fallout: NV for it.

Mass Effect 3 was brilliant until you-know-when...can't shake that hollow feeling.

Wow, I'm kind of surprised at all the Spec Ops love here. Why did everyone love it so much? The gameplay was atrociously boring and the story, while "different", was very poorly executed. How the hell does it deserve the title of GOTY, particularly in this year?
