Well, I dug a small hole into a mountain and called it a night. I eventually expanded that hole and built an expansive farm, a mine shaft, and other assorted rooms. Oddly enough you can't even see it now since it's under my current base.
I went to the top of a hill started digging made a stair way with a door added a window then a corridor and then a room made a kitchen and a window and then a bedroom then a secret passage into my mine below.
But yeah, my first minecraft home was a giant 64x64 tower, built from sea level all the way to the height limit. It took ages, and I never really got round to filling up all the levels.
I climbed up a ridge that went along the side of a mountain and made a home in the cliff. I then mined down into various cave systems and also dug up to the top of the mountain, where I created a ridiculously tall lighthouse to light my way were I to get lost. Then I realized I couldn't see it any good distance away anyway, but whatever, it was cool.
I've made a bunch of small rooms in a mountain, filled out the walls and floors with wood, actually took me a really long time to do, and I was pretty proud of it... till i accidentally found out about the dangers of the bucket full of lava.
I spent my first 4 nights or so running around and getting killed. I spent my days rebuilding my inventory and trying to find coal. I didn't know you could make charcoal, and I did know mobs spawned in dark places, I didn't know they wouldn't spawn close to you. So I didn't dare to build even a hole.
I have a habit of finding a nice mountain, borrowing inside it, then slowly chipping away at the inside and out like a parasite. My first base I made into a very nice castle in a snow area. I was planning a small deserted town in front of it, but accidentally deleted the file.
I remember that I played on peaceful for a while, so my first home was a floating tower that eventually gained a farm, a forest, a pool, and a fairly large, mostly glass house on top of it.
I found a little chunk of stone (I guess you could call it a very small quarry) dug into the wall and kept going till I hit the other side then put a door on each end and prayed I put enough torches to not hear a hiss behind me. After that I began my ultimate castle
i found the flattest cliff face, dug into the side, made a small entrance room and then made a spiral staircase into a huge chamber below. pretty sick for a first attempt
I more or less made my spawn point my home. Then later built an island castle... I more or less got bored of it soon enough and quit playing. I also was playing the old free version and never paid for the beta. The last company I gave money to for a beta was Microsoft when Vista was released.
