Just finished the book version of The Ring yesterday. It was pretty good, and very different from any of the movie/tv versions.

Just finishing up the Night's Dawn trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton, amazing series for me, I've already bought another two books by him for reading after. I'd definitely recommend him to anybody on here who's an intellectual and likes complicated sci-fi, which I'm betting(hoping) is quite a few of us.
Warning - his books take a while to get your head around.

At the moment I'm a little under halfway through Titanicus by Dan Abnett, a Warhammer 40,000 novel all about titans. Quite good so far!

My room is a mess, I tend to read whatever book I find first on my way to my bed. I have the Dexter omnibus, 1984(haven't seen it for months, and didn't get far) and "love all the people" by Bill Hicks on the go at the moment.

He claims that despite liking it, he can only read a few pages at a time before his mind revolts and he has to do something else.
I've unfortunately become like that, which is particularly depressing, because I used to be able to sit down and read a thousand pages in a day with no problems, then go back to the library and get a fresh stack of books to repeat that the day after. My attention span has gone entirely to crap, though, and I keep having to stop for 30-45 minutes every ten pages when I read most books these days, which is a pain in the ass. Took me a couple hours to make it through a 20 page essay by Bertrand Russell, and it's been over a year since I started The Road to Reality (yeah, I'm one of those people who reads physics books for fun, too), and I'm not quite done with the "intro" math (which is a bit long for an introduction, at something like 350 pages, heh).

The moral of this story: Head injuries are bad, m'kay?
Well, unlike him you seem to see this as a bad and somewhat unfortunate thing. So kudos for continuing to try.

As for my friend, I sometimes can't help but wonder if part of it was his upbringing. You know how when you go into most peoples houses, you can generally expect to see at least a book or two? Even if they don't like to keep a bunch of books in the house they'll usually have a few that were given to them as gifts or something and maybe even one borrowed from the library.

His parents house is completely devoid of books. I mean it is a fucking certified book-free zone, I've been through just about every room in that house multiple times over the years and with exception of my friends bedroom (and most of those were text books) I cannot recall ever seeing a single motherfucking book in the entire damn place.

It shows through when you realize just how completely not well-read his parents are, I was sitting in their living room once looking at the light fixture on the ceiling and I said to his Mom, "I like your light fixture, it looks very 'Frank Lloyd Wright' to me."

His Mother replied to me, "Oh, who's that?"

My mind kind of shut down at that point, simply recoiling in sheer horror at the statement.

I mean, really. They live in this country and have never even heard the god damned name?

...

Anyway back onto the topic of the thread, I not but a half an hour ago started to read Spacefaring: The Human Dimension [http://www.amazon.com/Spacefaring-Human-Dimension-Albert-Harrison/dp/0520236777/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1261359952&sr=8-1] by Albert A. Harrison.

Either gonna be Bourne Ultimatum or the 3rd book of Dean Koontz's Frankenstein. The last book I read was Bourne Supremacy.
