What's with "Iron Sights" in today's games?

Personally, I love the iron sights. The fact they're shit on a few weapons is an issue of it's own, but in general they're awesome and they give the game a more realistic feel.
Maybe if they were optional rather then mandatory I wouldn't care, but they are mandatory. How hard would it be to have an extra set of cross hairs... not bloody very.
Yes. They are indeed mandatory for effective gameplay in BFBC2. So, if you don't like it, don't play it.

You can disable New Vegas' iron sights in the game's settings, FYI.

Tried it and didn't like it, personally.

They do one very good thing, they narrow your vision considerably when you're going for a shot that would require alot of real world focus. That means that if you're camping you either have to be already aiming down the sights, leaving yourself vulnerable from all other angles, or waiting for a target before you focus in aim, which makes successfully camping harder.

My biggest beef with Ironsight aiming is simply how lazily it is designed sometimes. A lot of the times, they fail to realize the actual reason for iron sights or how they work. I've noticed this a lot in BLOPS, when a person fires a gun while the end sight and front sight aren't aligned the bullet still goes where the end sight is located, when in reality that shot would fly way off to the side. Or even when the back sight isn't even clear on where it is supposed to be aligned with on the front sight but the person can still hold it ramrod stiff with no reference (like the Galil). Sometimes there isn't even a second sight, and the character just knows magically how to hold it (like the Grim Reaper)

The Iron sights are better than the crosshair. It's an improvement in both feel and gameplay, in my opinion.

I dont mind the gun moving to the middle of the screen but it annoys me when it seems that your character is pressing his nose right next to the hammer on the gun. If they could move it to the middle and only zoom a little it wouldnt look so odd.

The subtle zooms used in the old Medal Of Honor games (Underground, Frontline etc) wasnt intrusive and it served its purpose, no iron sights needed.

I think the issue that's more important than this, is that it needs to be switchable in the options. Many small things can be beyond annoying, but can't turned off (I hate being bugged with all kinds of messages in BC2, but you can never turn the vomit stream off).

It's a Call of Duty thing. I guess they wanna imply that with sights your aim isn't as crap as without them which is true in -some- cases, but in the end merely makes me want to punch the developer and force them to play some Counter Strike. Games are meant to be -fun-. And if realism makes it -less- fun, then realism needs to go.
Call of Duty thing? Iron-sights were around before that lulz.

what we're discussing here is a personal preference, some people prefer arcade vs simulation; both are valid game types and both have their place. If you want arcade play unreal tournament, if you want simulation play Americas army, if you want something in between play CSS or COD, but whatever you do don't pick a game and then ***** that its not what you want.

OT: personally, when done well, I love iron sights; especially in games that are set in a realistic or pseudo realistic environment... it adds to the immersion, at least for me.

It makes sense: aim from the hip if you need a fast burst of fire in the event an enemy pops in front of you; use iron sights for long range targets.

Personally, I love iron sights.

Experience and upgrades are hardly 'RPG elements'. Maybe in the most minute sense of the word.
In the video game world, they are considered RPG elements.

XP has been a defining trait of RPG Video Games for decades now, whether you consider it to be accurate or not. By this point, any niggling about the term is fairly pedantic.
