If the game allows, I find I almost always fallow the art of stealth. It's just something about taking out mooks without anyone being the wiser that warms my heart.

Either the mage with nuke style offensive magic, or the brainless warrior with a sword bigger than myself that I can capably fuck shit up with.

With good games, I like to play through several times with different classes and mix things up, but my first choice character is always what I consider to be the most balanced class.

I often sacrifice top end attacks or tanking defence to go for something in the middle. I'm the typical jack of all trades, master of none player.

Upon reading your post, I actually had to make some contemplating to come up with an answer, it really got me thinking and I came to the conclusion that the same as you and your friend I like only certain types of classes, two of them actually.

My all time favorite class would be the Paladin! I just love a class that has special abilities against undead or demons, I love the Paladin from Diablo 2, Neverwinter Nights or the Seraphim from Sacred, which is almost the same thing.

But after playing this type class so extensively and vanquishing so many undead and demons, that I started developing a second love for the Necromancer/Warlock type of class which summons undead and demons to aid them.

It's quite ironically amusing for me when I think about it, especially that I couldn't decide which class I like the most, but I guess I love both of these classes, I love that Good vs Evil fight, where sometimes I like playing good and sometimes bad.

edited for mis-typos and idea changes .. as I said it really got me thinking :)

Hmm...in video games, I tend to be melee, usually any dual wielder. Preferably any class that enables me to be fast and comboriffic, at the cost of defense and range.

In roleplaying, I tend to either be a rogue or a gunslinger, something either sneaky, with range, or both.

I tend to go for Glass Cannons, usually Rogues or Mages.

Oddly enough in STO I went for a Cruiser built to be as ridiculusly durable as possible.

Usually the Scout type class like a Rogue or Ranger. It's true in just about every game even modern FPS's like COD where I pick stuff like Ghost/Lightweight with a silenced SMG and run around the outskirts of the map killing people silently, plus it's the best way to get kills on COD because people look at the radar more than the fucking game.

I realised I always play that class when I hit lv50 on Aion with my Ranger, and when a guildee asked me what I was gonna level as an alt toon I said "probably an Assassin", to which she responded "you always make those classes", and it's fucking true. I don't even have anything against the other classes, I just always pick the Scout. Recently I've been playing a lot of support type classes, and I like it, like the Chanter in Aion, Priest in WoW, Medic in Battlefield etc. I'm gonna pick them classes more often now, although nothing compares to the Monk in Guild Wars; they were amazing. :(

Mage. In any game where I can choose a magic-based class, I go for that. Preferably one with powerful offensive magic, even if his defence is sacrificed (the glass cannon effect).

I'm either an offensive mage,or some other class that can crank out damage like it's going out of style using skills.

Well..
I like being a healer
I like having heavy armor a tower shield and a big ass mace
And I like being on the frontlines soaking up damage.
..So.. Cleric/Paladin most of the time.
If not then some kind of physical item healer (By physical items I mean instead of channeling a healing spell they bonk someone across the head with a potion and tell them to get off their lazy ass and drink it.) , like an Alchemist in oh so few games

My favorite character ever though didnt have a specific class but it would fall under cleric/paladin.

im mostly play as rangers or mages( or both, if the game lets you have two classes like in guild wars)
But in star wars:the old republic, i will most likely play as a bounty hunter or sith inquisiter.

Glass cannons with a trick up their sleeve. I don't give a fuck if they're comparatively fragile, just give me some hard hitting abilities with some stealth or traps to get away with and I'm set.

I usually will be a heavy magic oriented class, generally in high damage fashion. World of Warcraft? Mage. Dragon Age? Mage. In non-fantasy based games, it varies. In TF2 I like playing practically every class with the exception of scout, in the more modern-flavor FPS's, I like going as an engineer type character, who can repair, build, take out vehicles, etc.

Mage for me, preferably all-out damage with some support spells.

In FPS'es I prefer classes like Spy in TF2, then again, there isn't any other FPS with a class like that, so I'll say sniper.

I like that your favorite classes are polar opposites. And I'm sure that you have an appreciation for the strengths and weaknesses of both making you much more dangerous as whichever you are playing as.

In my own post, I didn't go into my thought process for how I came to my own class preference, to save time and to avoid that 10 paragraph subject that people seem to avoid like the plague. Below is my reasoning.

The only MMO I ever played was FFXI. I started as a Red Mage because I wanted to be able to use a variety of magic and still use a sword. I actually enjoyed my Red Mage quite a lot. The variety allowed options in every encounter and I could fill many roles in a party and support the group in general. Eventually, I moved onto the advanced jobs of Dark Knight (heavy weapon and offensive magic), Paladin (heavy armor and healing magic), and Samurai (physical damage specializing in use of Weapon Skills). These were my favorite jobs in FFXI. Obviously I like magic, but want a sword in my hand, so really I'm a sword fighter that supplements my attacks with magic.

This wasn't enough to warrant a favorite class, because it was only one game and rather inconclusive in the end. So I thought about Dragon Age: Origins next. I started as a Warrior with two handed weapons, but I beat the game first as a Mage. Not just any Mage, but an Arcane Mage that fought like a tank.

Then, I realized that any time recently that I thought of a class that I want to play as in a group game, I look at tanking classes first. I volunteer for that role. Preferably one that has some healing magic so I can heal my own wounds to an extent (thus getting more hate and protecting the healer from hate). Really the FFXI Paladin was my favorite tank class. And when we were talking about Diablo 3, I was wondering if there is a heavy armored tank class in the game. When talking about SW:TOR I stated that I wanted to play as a Sith Warrior Juggernaut, so that I could tank if needed.

Even in roles that don't tank, I put my group first. Always trying to keep them alive first. I'll distract a monster, to buy my party time. Stay behind to ensure others escape and things like that. Rush in under gun fire to revive a fallen comrade. Generally, it's not important that I win, so much as WE win.

So, I am a tank.
