Unlike you people, I'm going to choose an actual element (Periodic Table)
Carbon. Nearly everything is made of Carbon. with control of it I could shift the carbon bonds in my skin to make it harder than diamond,decay my enemies from the inside out, and control the shape and form of the earth itself.

Wind and Air, because in a sense you could control fire and water as well, just in a more non traditional fashion.
I'd go with water, though air is a close second.
Walking on Water, breathing water (a hollow water helmet?) awesome swimming, ice, control of the waves, control of other people (we are mostly made of water, right?).
Oh, and i guess you could condense the water in the air and change it to ice, so then you could walk around 50 feet up.

True, but it's too specific... perhaps calling it "Life" instead... and (getting way over-analytical), wouldn't Light and Darkness be effectively the same?TheNamlessGuy said:
EDIT: It's like comparing DnD to M&M... they're similar, but the definitions are almost completely different.
I'd probably go earth cos its always around and can probably be the most useful... and (given the last airbender) it can be extended to metal so I can go all magneto! 
And in modern society there is so much metal that u'd always be able to bend something (if that doesn't work ill just go with metal)

My element...I would have to say is easily Iridium, IR, Atomic number 77 with a relative mass of 192.2. Great stuff.
