It won't happen. The political and cultural landscape of the planet has permanently changed in such a way as to make a third world war impossible. The closest thing we'll ever get is the current "war on terror" which really isn't a world war any more than the "war on drugs" is a world war.
India and Pakistan almost went to war in 2001/2002. And they still hate each other.
That wouldn't have been a world war, that would have been an India/Pakistan war.
But it would have been a nuclear war. =D
No it wouldn't, for very obvious reasons. Think about the proximity of those two countries and WHY they hate each other.

Still not a world war anyway.
Well it wouldn't be a world war straight away. But if it went on long enough, and shit got real, other countries could be asked for aid from either side.

Isn't a large part of the world already at war?

America and Allies busy running troops and drones up and down some third world counties.

UN bombing Libya.

Several Arab countries facing massive uprisings.

The 2 Koreas enjoying some skirmishes and threats.

Sudan getting ready to divide itself and start a war between North and South.

Somalia, facing massive internal turmoil and sending more ppl fleeing to the seas for piracy.

Israel and Palestine - the never-ending war.

The inevitable strike of Israel/America on Iran still looming ahead.

Several other egs. Heck, even the Canadians had a riot.

It may not be a World War, but it is a World at war.

I'm not sure we've ever left the Cold War era. Sure the Soviet Union has been disbanded, but many conflicts that began in that time-period are still continuing on today. Off the top of my head, we've got:

- Increasing tensions between Iran and the Western powers.

- North and South Korea caught in a persisting border conflict.

- India and Pakistan caught in a nuclear arms race with each other.

- Several revolutions in the Middle-East including Egypt, Libya, and Syria.

- Rampant piracy in Somalia and other nations along the East African coast.

- The Pro-Han government in China suppressing and outright shunning other ethnic Chinese groups.

- The United States being dragged into a border war with Mexican cartels.

- Al Qaeda and the Taliban still at large.

But if I had to guess where the next big war will take us, it would probably be Iran or Pakistan. Even then, a fight with those nations would result in an armed occupation like the Iraq War instead of a heavy-casualty World War.

I'm guessing in a special place called "Nowhere".
Seconded, a little thing called mutually assured destruction makes it seem highly unlikely that there will be any global scale conflicts in the near or distant future.

Likewise. I just really don't see it happening. At least not on any short term scale.
Mutually assured destruction didn't prevent the first world war, it won't prevent the next. "The savage nature of men, will lead to it's own destruction" I believe thats from watchmen, but I'm not sure. Its likely true though.

Well, it would make most sense for it to be on the soil of a Super Power, so America or China or perhaps even Russia. Although it may instead be a war without a physical place as a battlefield, so teh interwebz perhaps. If the war were to be started by the launching of missiles, then it could just as easily be any country really.

Honestly? I'm guessing that it wouldn't just be one point. The nature of war today is that it would probably be started by multiple parties (money's on China and the United States) over something like resources (news flash, we're running out), and would span the globe in conflict. So where? Everywhere. Economic conflict will ripple through every country and military conflict will probably be confined to mostly the Asian area (China's fleet isn't developed enough to attack the United States' navy, but it's enough to establish regional dominance).
Reminds me of Chaos Theory. Both the actual theory and the game. Great game by the way.

China, Burma, India. Too many people, too many weapons, too many sore feelings. Give it about 3 decades, and we'll see it kickoff.

im guessing that it wont we no longer fight massive imperial wars like we did in the mid 20th century its all small quick wars followed by occupation and counterinsergiency(spelling. these wars over resourses will be kept contaied so that the individual mission creeps dont get out of hand and combine ond or take over.the goal is to stay at war with out fully or even partially mobilising your civilian population as here in canada. the other reason is nukes cant have wourld war with nukes. total war as we know it died in the fifties. we now are jsut stuck with wars of influence as the us is still playing for third world resources aganst not ideological opponents but economic opponents.

Pakistan hates India over a disputed province. India hates Pakistan because it's harboring terrorists who will/have/are kill/killed/killing Indian civilians and mostly are/will/did getting/get away with it.

As for Pakistan not using Nukes, I call bullshit, they whole sale sold their nuclear weapons program to whoever was the highest bidder, that kind of says they're not exactly anti-proliferation, which is a pretty good indicator, they'll use Nukes.

It started in 2001. It's just that nobody dared call it that.
The military action in the last 10 years has been absolutely nothing compared to either of the world wars, the differences in scale and the numbers of countries participating make the idea that we're currently in a world war kind of ridiculous.

World War 1 - 16 milion dead, in 4 years, involved every major power in the world.

World War 2 - 60 million dead, in 6 years, involved every major power in the world.

War on Terror - 1-2 million dead, in 10 years, does not involve every major power in the world.

The worst that could happen is that the US backs India and then it'd be just like fighting the Taliban again but from the other direction. Not a world war, not even close.

Apperantly you don't know history...
No I passed Advanced Placement History in High School, while the murder of Franz Ferdinad in Austria was without a doubt the cause of WW1. Germany though gave a blank check to Austria because they wished to build a railroad through Bosnia (maybe Belgium can't remember) to the black sea doing this really made them the mastermind of the war behind the scenes.

Also in the Treaty of Versailles signed after the war Germany did accept full responsibility for the war.

That's the beauty of World War 5,it's so intense,it skips over the other two.
