Probably a ps3 for you since you can pretty much get all 360s exclusives on PC. Don't worry about the online services there both nothing compared to steam and the 360s online is ruled by kids.

Being a PC gamer who owns a 360 I would say to you, get the PS3 and learn to like the controller.
Don't get me wrong, the 360 is a great console, with a very large internet community, but I find any of the interesting "Exclusives" end up on the PC as well and I usually get them for the PC.
The PS3 on the other hand is a console that I am really interesting in buying. At the last E3 it announced some very interesting games coming out that I suggest you check out. A Bluray player would be nice, seeing how it is becoming the new media for movies.

i don't think there are enough games that are different to PC games to warrant you spending the cash
but if you really want a console to just break from pc gaming, heres an out of the box suggestion for you. for about £100 (100 euro, $200 ish) you could buy a ps2, an original xbox and a pile of classic games (plus the price of xbox games and ps2 games are so cheap, really cheap) you can then use the left over cash to upgrade your PC.
win win situation, unless your a graphics whore or elitist and demand current technology

in my experience with both consoles it comes down to one thing, what your looking for in a console. the advantages of the 360 is that is online is way better than sony's and add-ons for games come months-years earlier for 360 games (the ps3 version of fallout 3 doesnt have any addons yet availible while all the addons to be published have already been released for 360) and you can play almost all the original xbox games on the 360 and you cant play and ps2 games on the new ps3s. youll need to get a 60gig one to play ps3 games but those arent in development anymore so youll have to get it second hand. the xbox has a stronger lineup of games than 360 and the new motion sensitive Project Natal looks awesome, better than it's competitors, check out Natal. and as for the RROD. if you want to fully avoid that than get a 260 elite system since they have added heatsinks, falcon 65nm chips and the matte black finish helps to expel heat from the system. play the 360 on its side becuase it hasa hughe row of fans along the bottom and i can guarantee you wont get a RROD (assuming its an elite). the only things better about the ps3 is that its graphics are slightly, slightly better. and thats only if you have a full HD TV set, in standard defition, 360 and ps3 graphics are the same. and unnoticeably ebtter on HD. also the online is free, but worse than the 360's. and the hardware is better for the ps3 so it can have more in depth games, like MAG which is an MMO shooter, but the graphics and the hardware means that ps3 games take more time to make and are more expensive. an average 360 game cost 40 quid while a ps3 one cant cost above 50 pounds. and the games development taking longer means that there will be approximately 3 xbox 360 games for every 1 ps3 game. in conclusion, id say get the 360. i have one, so thumbs up to that! dont listen to anything about the 360 having its life cycle finisehd. if you watch microsoft's e3 press conference, it says that they are intending to continue the 360 and, i quote, "it's not even halfway through it's lifecycle yet" so you can look forward to plenty more games and content. and of course halo 3 is a reason to buy the 360 alone! lol. dont make the wrong choice man (or woman? i dont know) get a 360. and may happy gaming days to you.
Honestly? I would get a Wii. Most of the games are actually fun, and if you can get past that stupid gimmick that most of the games have...Or at least stick with playing that one you've got access to. I wouldn't spend the money on a console, personally, because I can only seem to have fun with two or three of the games I can find for it. If anything, though, I'd say a PS3, because if you feel like playing online, it doesn't cost you money. It's also got some better exclusives, like LittleBigPlanet and MGS4.*

Honestly, simply based on your comment of controllers, I would suggest getting a 360. Do you really want to play your console games on a controller you don't like?

True yes, but the difference is barely noticable, plus it's not true for every game. For example, Crysis 2 looks much better on the PS3, and GTA4 doesn't suffer from dissapeaing scenery on the PS3 as it does on the 360

It is true. The 360 made no technological jumps when it was released, and it's tech specs therefore are pretty bad - a tricore processor, and DVD player. Most of the games that look good use the UT engine, which, depending on how good you are at noticing detail, is just over-bloomed textures.

Also bullshit,and elite has the superior hardware that means it is rrod proof, especially if you play it on its side. it was brought out six months after the originals becuase they suffered the most and the elite system was microsoft's reply to the RROD.

Whether they are better games is subjective, but from a tech point of view, they are.
And what does the ps3 have? not much seeing as you're not a metal gear of ff fan. resistance and killzone are the best you can hope or, and gears of war 2 and fable 2 arent short, theyre extremely long! and if you like fps check out left 4 dead and left 4 dead 2.

It is, but apparently the HDD is more noisy, but overall the console is quieter. Either way, the PS3 is a very quiet console, makes less noise than the PS2 in my experience.

As you said you like FPS' you'd probably love Killzone 2, depending on your level of skill. It looks great, has the best map design I've ever seen and plays better than most FPS'. If realism isn't your style, then Resistance 2 is a hell of a good laugh online. 30 vs 30 with no spawn points and large, well thought out maps is great pick-up-and-play fun.
- Flower looks awesome.
It is, but it's short, only 6 levels (I think a 7th secret level). But it is nice and relaxing, and looks stunning on a good HDTV as it's in full 1080p, giving the viewer and orgy of colour to look at.

The components can't be changed, but as far as graphics go, Crytek said that no game has fully used the power of the PS3, and yet MGS4 and Killzone 2 have some of the best, if not best (Yep, better the Crysis) graphics I have ever seen. Plus, as the console has a bluray player, it means as games get bigger, and data transfer speeds need to be higher, the console can handle it. Plus the OS is great. Can stream almost any media to it from your PC, or just put media on to a data stick and plug it into the PS3. there is no way o say the ps is futureproof. you cannot say that based on facts, nothing is futureproof.
- More powerful hardware? I've heard information contradicting this which is saying the 360 has better graphics capacity.
The PS3 is better in everyway than the 360. Yes, the 360 has a slightly better GPU than the PS3 BUT the PS3's CPU can also render very effectively, meaning the PS3 is a hell of a lot faster than the 360, and has much better graphics capabilities. Plus you can change the HDD to a faster SATA one, or even a top of the range SDD if you want. Having seen 2 demos of SDD in the PS3, one from over a year ago had the SDD performing more slowly then the standard HDD, and the one from the beginning of this month had an SDD performing the same as the standard HDD. Therefore, it'd seem that when SDD's are cheaper and better, they should perform much better than a regular physical HDD.
If the 360 has a better GPU then the ps3 obiviously isn't better than the 360 in every way is it?? plus the fact that almost every ps3 game comes out for he 360 as well, so what does hardware matter, unless you're really into that graphics thing.
And now that the 360 Elite and PS3 are the same price, I'd go for the PS3 as it has better exclusives and is future proof. Plus, Sony Motion could be great for hardcore games, with the EyeToy doing everything that Natal is planned to do. Sadly, Sony do shoot themselves in the foot by not pushing this kind of information.

I own a 360 and PS3, I'd recomend the 360, not because i think it, leaps and bounds ahead of the PS3, but from the information you've placed before us, it seems to be more your bang baby. =]

I'd go ps3, If only because at this point you might get a few more years out of it. I personally like the exclusives for it better, but ive never been a halo fan. also if you dont like the Daulshock 3, try this
