Sony seem to have always released a big, ugly console followed by a smaller, prettier brother. I wouldn't be shocked to see it done to the PS3 (dibs on "PSpi").

I can't say that the DS is imaginative; you could recreate it by sellotaping two appropiately sized cardboard boxes together.

I quite agree.... that little thing was GORGEOUS. BTW- I think the reason hardly anyone bought one was because no one could FIND one. I looked all over the place for it, and nada.

From a purely aesthetic point of view?

(Mods, put down your ban hammers - Fanboys climb down from those oh-so-high horses)

I got a PS3 for Christmas and, after thinking it looked pretty nice in images, was surprised at how damn ugly it is in the flesh.
The 360 sitting next to it isn't much better and the machine next to that, my much defended Wii, is about as nondescript as they come.

Further consideration has led me to the conclusion that there hasn't really been an aesthetically pleasing games machine since the gorgeous re-design of the PSone:

and before that you have to go all the way back to the iconic Spectrum 48k:

I really can't think of any others that actually looked nice - some were 'ok' (Dreamcast, Megadrive) and handhelds usually look pretty decent, but on the whole the physical design of most consoles, since their inception, seems to have been somewhat lacking.
Just to avoid any trolls and flamers from turning up, you might want to rename the thread. Perhaps "Which is the best looking console", or something along those lines.

As for my response, I would say that the Xbox 360 looks quite streamlined and nice. It's just the bulky tangle of wires and fire at the back and the three red lights on the front that I'm not so keen on xD. The PS3 and Wii both look alright, except that the PS3 is a bit of a juggernaut compared to the others. I prefer the look of the DS Lite to any other handheld console, included the standard DS itself. As for previous gen consoles, I quite like the look of the GBA and the PS2, although aesthetically Dreamcast would win that (it's only redeeming feature, in my opinion).

My PS2 is currently my favourite-looking console ^^
It's the non-slim version. I have it set vertically, with a circular stand with neon lights. The little... crevices? on the console (you know, those two lines which are a little deeper than the rest of the case and run along the front of the console) have been filled with blue neon lights as well. It's geometrical, black, minimalistics, yet detailed.

All the current-gen consoles look pretty sweet, but the wii is sleek, simple AND miniscule.

GBA SP always looks great when I look at it.

The Neo Geo AEX was cool.

I really like the design of the N64.

I think the winner is the PS3 though.

*eyes roll* is this a test to see how many people don't read the OP?

As for the topic... srsly?
I was thinking the same thing. So many people failed to even answer the question... it was actually kind of shameful.

Honestly though from this generation I like the Wii's look. It is very... minimalist but in a good way. The PS3 is second because it is big and monolithic... yet it loses points for being easily confused with a printer. X-box 360 looks good from the front but looks... stretched from a side view.

Overall though I would have to say the Game Boy Micro looks pretty good.

The handhelds do seem to have a much higher ratio of attractive machines.

I would have got a nice black one of those if my mum wasn't so stingy. >.>

I love the design of the GBA: SP.
So compact and gosh-darn good looking...

I think Nintendo wins the cute contest. From the N64 onward, the Nintendo consoles have always been the pinnacle of cute, attractive design, culminating in the Wii.

Sony has been getting hardcore lately with the PS3, but consider that both the PS1 and PS2 both underwent a redesign that had them come out looking much nicer. The PS3 should get one as well in a few years. In the meantime, it will still be the monolithic beast of the console race. Which is cool.

The "X"Box was cool as well, with its giant "X" on the front. But the 360 lost the hard-edge touch when they softened the corners and smoothed out the design. Where the XBox was rough-around-the-edges (figuratively), the 360 seems a little softer, a little weaker aesthetically.

We'll probably have this same discussion in the next console generation. "The Nintendo Revolution 2 is small and cute, the Playstation 4 is a big, black, monster monolith, and the XBox 720 looks like the 360 and Wii had a baby then threw it out a window."

Also, does anyone notice the color divide? Nintendo - White. Sony - Black/Red. Microsoft - Green.

I'm not sure why I should change the title of a thread just to accommodate those who lack the sense and intelligence to read one single line of text.

I won't bullshit anyone; I thought this was an interesting, original idea for a thread and I decided to post it in a way that would expose the fact that these forums aren't as mature/different/eclectic/whatever as many like to believe.

I'm fairly sure I've been proven right on both counts.
