I only heard about this 50 shades book a few days ago when the author of the web comic Girls with Slingshots pissed some people off in the S&M community. This is a very big thing I take it? Cause up until now it has passed silently below my internet radar.

Though if Gilbert Godfried is doing a reading of a trashy romance novel I guess there's some laughs to be had from it.

Television and our increasing use of it. Given the general lack of reading going on, it's unsurprising that people can't tell complete and utter garbage when they find it. The horrifying thing is sometimes you think, "well, at least they're reading something."

Heh... You do realize this book is not at all marketed to teens right? The primary demographics buying romance novels, and almost certainly this one in particular, are 40 year old housewives. Just like the author of this piece of dreck.

Interesting fact: According to the guy who works at the comic book store I frequent, it's the same demographic that buys up all the Yaoi manga. As he put it, "they crawl out of the woodwork for the stuff."

HOLLYWOOD EXECUTIVES for cashing in on garbage by throwing millions at it to produce a movie of it.
SCREENPLAY ADAPTERS for translating the awfulness of the original product to another medium without in any way improving it.
ADVERTISERS AGAIN because they're advertising it in two mediums now.
MOVIEGOERS for supporting this tripe with their money instead of going to see something else more worthy of their time (see also: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World -vs- The Expendables).

Frankly, I think you can get angry at the fact that it sold so well, when there has been good books which haven't sold as well. Imagine if some of your favorite games felt the need to pander to the sweaty horny teenager demographic. Wouldn't you feel slightly peeved? Whenever I go into the book store and see an aisle for this I can't help but resent those who buy and propagate the trash. It doesn't that it's popular that I have to like it.

It might not have an effect on the long run, but I can't help but feel that it's not doing humanity any favors that this sold more copies than Harry Potter.

A piece of Twilight fanfiction turned standalone novel series, about a naive college girl who signs her life away to a rich older man, who proceeds to beat, humiliate, and borderline rape her. And people love it for some reason.

Would it be too optimistic to think that the reason people love it is because at the end, the now no-longer naive girl packs in the life of submission and cuts off the older dude's goolies, perhaps stealing his money in the process?

I blame stephanie meyer. after reading the whole twilight series i can conclusively say its a poorly written, shallow mary sue fantasy. (not that you need me to tell you that)

but when i looked up 50 shades of grey i was suprised to find it featured so much sex, considering the twilight trend of "blank personalityless female being pursued by a/many handsome men"

although one thing about 50 shade, the lead characters called "Anastasia steele". seriously? what kind of fucking name is that, thats a porn name, thats the name you expect a stripper to have. Apart from that 50 shades looks like its nothing too bad, just another author insert fantasy but with a better author then twilight.
