Because we're attention whores!

But seriously there are different definitions of "emo".

This user has the right idea:

Alright, I need to really clear some thing up.

For those who don't know (apparently most of you) "Emo" can mean many things. Such as:

A. ORIGINALLY, the term referred to what was mostly an clothing style. It was an offshoot of punk, based mostly around simply wearing whatever the hell you felt like wearing. People who chose to be "emo" tended to be more in touch with their emotions than others, and NOT JUST SADNESS. They'd react more noticeably with sadness, happiness, love, anger, everything. As for the clothing, the 'rules' were almost nonexistent, and much of it could be even fluorescent and eccentric, as opposed to the bland blackness we think of today.

B. People use the word to refer to people who are seriously, legitimately, diagnostically depressed. These people really need help and compassion to be guided through their dark times and avoid leaning towards drastic measures, like committing suicide. I don't see why anyone could really hate these people, as they are usually fairly quiet, and sometimes put on a façade and don't even seem depressed to others.

C. The most common perception, the ones that are actually the most hated. These are the people that are simply attention-seekers; they simply pretend to be depressed and slouch around town looking at the ground, wearing all black and listening to MCR or something. They are the ones who deserve a good sock to the head. They are all narcissistic SOBs (or Bs, as the case may be) who simply want other peoples reaction, whether it's pity or disdain. They feed on the responses of others, similarly to internet trolls. THEY are the annoying, whiny, fake brats that we all love to hate.

D. There is sort of a fourth group. There are some people who do not act as anything remotely connected to Emo, and simply like the clothing and/or music. These ones are a test in judgment, proving that you should not see someone's clothing and hate them for the personality that you assume they have.

They're just miserable for the sake of being miserable, which translates to attention seeking.

Because while most of them claim to be sad/depressed most of the time they aren't, and as someone who's dealt with some serious depression, it tends to sound like whiny bullshit. These are the whole "emo lifestyle" kinds, by the way, the people into the music, clothing, and general lifestyle. People who are actually depressed don't deserve people bitching at them, nor do people who just like the clothes or just like the music.

I've never been one to shirk away from reality. Even in the cases where I've wanted to the most. I don't get high, I don't drink myself into a stupor and I don't cut myself up.
Every problem has a solution so long as there are problems to be had.
If you make up a problem and therefore make it unsolvable in your own mind you're setting yourself up for failure.
And thusly more cutting.
And a deeper depression.
Medical depression is not a part of your personality in the slightest. It can impact your personality, yes, but it's not a part of it. I think we've all experienced depression on some degree to know it can pass and it can be solved. Either by fixing your problems, by some sort of epiphany or even drugs; depression is something that can be averted and overcome.
Now that is good for you. Still, not everyone is that way. All I´m asking is why it is so hard to have compassion with those that struggle more.

I do not believe we have all experienced depression to a medical degree. I have felt depressed quite often, but that is still an enormous difference to the actual medical condition.
And if that is solvable only with medication, where is the difference to using drug?
Medication that lifts you out of a depression, how is that different from getting high? It is artificial and will pass over time, how is that a solution?
If I have to take pills for the rest of my life or fall back into the depression, how is my depression overcome by that?
If you take medication on a regimen I don't see how it's a temporary fix.

Getting high only lasts so long. You can't be high all the time. It's a temporary fix. Drugs are more permanent, considering you can take them and pass a piss test or perform your daily functions.

Because to anyone who's had real problems or struggled with problems of their own, an emo's philosophy of "fuck it, why bother trying, its society's fault and everyone else is too stupid or happy to notice", come off as both incredibly patronizing and weak.

And a person's usual reaction to weakness is to beat it out of them.

It is temporary in the sense that the effect stops, if you stop taking it, for whatever reason. You can stop taking the drug, and you will fall back.
Sounds quite like an addiction to me...

My point is, that the medication is external and artificial. You did not solve your problem, a chemical did that for you.
You can go on taking them forever, and you can go on taking drugs forever.

Of course a medical prescription drug will (probably) not do as much damage to you and your body as some "getting-high-drug" will and is of course the far better alternative. But it is not a permanent solution in the sense that your depression is only postponed for the duration of the drug, which you may be able to expand indefinatly, but you will always know that the drug is giving you your life back, not your own achievment.

There are cases in which this may be the only alternative. But that proves my point, that there are conditions you may be unable to overcome by your own power.

I see that is is highly unlikely the average emo-kid falls in this category. I only wanted to point out that even in our rich and happy society there are people, and even children and teenagers with genuine problems, traumas and conditions. And that I find it very harsh to stigmatize them for that and to make fun of them.

Ok, on second thought, I´m not talking about emos at all anymore...
Maybe I see the point of the thread. ;-)

I've never seen an emo - only the light surrounding them.

Did you hear about that self produced emo band? Apparently they cut themselves.

The emo trend is just alot of attention whoring and faking. It is also really easy to make fun of them, just look up the emo song.

The dress sense is atrocious, tight black jeans, tight band tees, make up and the emo hair style.

I just want to shake them and tell them to grow up and get over themselves, bitching about how hard your life is, is plain insulting to people who have it really hard.

I am not just talking about the obvious "think of the 3rd world countries", I mean kids getting beaten up and locked in small dark rooms. While they hate there parents 'cos they got shouted at for doing drugs and coming in at 3 am making a racket after getting pissed.

I am talking about the stereotype here, before anybody starts commenting on that.

If they have had a hard life, suck it up! My up bringing wasn't stellar but dwelling on the bad just ruins your life, put it behind you and move on.

Hello fellow escapists!
A thought just struck me, why do most of us hate emos?
Because that's what people do. So why have a big discussion over something that is so common in society? so anyways...blah blah human behaviour blah blah social groups blah blah my chemicaln romance is a shitty band(not that they anything to do with emos), and how dare people compare the Black Parade to The Wall.

Also, i'm fucking sick of people attaching what type of music person listens to as a way to identify that persons personality. That alone is my biggest pet peeve about anything to do with social groups. I can jam out to Devil Driver then Donna Summers, and end my day with some Floyd. I do however stand by the fact that MCR sucks( not that they have anything to do with emo.

Yes, the world is a horrible place; yes, humans are mostly garbage; however wasting all your time and energy whining about a fact like that won't change the outcome, it'll actually speed up the process.
A true emo with an Atlas-syndrome should fight for it and prove the opposite is possible.
The emos that are mentioned in OP however are simply crying for attention because they refuse to see that if you want things to change, you gotta do it yourself.
That or they have a severe case of borderline/bi-polar/manic (which in my area are the most common types)

Because they're suburban white kids who sit in their parent's $250,000 house (and in their own room, mind you), listening to their $300 iPod filled with illegally downloaded music and complaining about how much their life sucks, possibly while writing crappy poetry on their $3000 computer.

They're hated because they act like they've got something to be sad about, when really, they've got no right to feel that way.

I don't hate emos.

I do however find it odd that they loath their life considering most of them have very little to complain about.

Why don't I like emos?
Why don't I like [whiners and debbie downers]?
Why don't I like [people who try so hard to be counter-culture by completely conforming to another culture?]

Oh, I dunno.

Because they are people who feed off of pity. They just whine and are irritating and eccentric.
They dress strangely, are negative and depressing. If they don't want to be hated, grow up and live like everyone else and stop crying about it.

Because without being hated.. emos wouldnt have anything to feel sad about and thus would not exist?

Sorry, have no sympathy for "baby goths"
Yes because all life revolves you. I can tell you this with out a doubt, a so called 'emo' couldn't give less of a shit what you or anyone else thinks, besides a selective few.

As for the reason we hate them, because all mankind is stupid=] we hate and fear all that is not normal to us and are to selfcentered to realise were not normal to the rest of the world=]=]
thats my thought anyways
