EVERYBODY READ THIS, YOU IGNORANT MORONS:
EMO IS NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT IS, IT'S A DEAD SUBGENRE OF HARDCORE PUNK. Emo is not pop-punk dressed in black like MCR or modern rock like Fallout Boy, it's completely different, and the reason why the label 'emo' was applied to something it bears no resemblance to is beyond me. I'll probably put on probation for this, because this site does not encourage true free speech, and people hate to think they are wrong, but PLEASE, READ THESE AND STOP BEING SO GODDAMNED STUPID:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo

I seriously hate how so many people can be so ignorant.

The music, of God the fucking music. Screamo makes we want to punt babies into wood chippers. THAT is why I hate emos.

Because they whine a lot, and always feel the need to inform others that they enjoy cutting themselves.

At least, in my experiences. But I haven't seen many anymore, I think the fad died.
I only knew my friend cut when she grabbed my arm to help keep my from tripping and her guantlet slipped down and I saw the scars. She also has 'em on her legs and chest and I think some on her stomach and hips as well. Creepy, you know?

Because they ripped off every other "alternative" subculture, and they whine incessantly. They ruined stripes, Converse, safetypins, hair dye, skinnyjeans, piercings, eyeliner, blood, MUSIC, and a load of other things that I can't think of now. Don't get me wrong, I have a few emo friends who are pretty sound, but I just hate all the bullshit. My parents were goths in the 80s, and they haven't changed much (my dad hasn't changed at all), so I grew up around goths, punks and crusties (when I started going to school it freaked me out that none of the boys had long hair(goths were my favourite, which was why my dad made all my clothes (ever seen a 2 year old with leather trousers and a mohican? I looked pretty awesome))). Anywho, my original point before I started rambling, is that I have practically been a goth since I was old enough to say so (I remember this one time when I was about 3, asking my dad if I could be a goth), and I'm still proudly flying the black flag, so in a nutshell, when emo came out, I was just thinkin', "man, this is crap. Alright mate, you enjoy yourself moping around Argos or some shit, I'll be over there chillin' in the sun with ma mates and ma girl, listenin' to some Skinny Puppy, gettin' stoned, looking nicer than you, and having a nice fucking time. Enjoy your angsty middle class disillusionment, you pillock." So essentially, emo is goth for pussies who can't quite squeeze into their skinnyjeans.

This is some music from actual Emo bands:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge8ucvLYLRc this is Rites of Spring, a mid-80's group that pioneered the (real) genre of Emo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGJFWirQ3ks this is Fugazi, who formed from the ashes of Rites of Spring after they split up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mUtFumAFI4 this is from Jawbreaker, a later period Emo/ Melodic Hardcore band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGRdVyrTb_Q and here's Mineral, another late period Emo band from the mid-90's who bridged the gap between the end of Emo and the beginning of its close cousin Post-Hardcore.

This is what Emo was. Too bad it's dead.

I don't hate all Emos.

But I hate the whiny ones. Yeah, I get that you've gone through hard shit. Who hasn't? You just have to be a man[footnote]Or woman, this rant does not discriminate[/footnote], suck it up, and get on with your life. I certainly didn't cry about what happened to me, and you shouldn't either.

However, there are the emos that simply listen to different music then I, or dress differently or something like that. I have no problem with that. You can do whatever the fuck you want to your appearance, listen to whatever music you want to, it's a free country. Just keep your emotions to yourself, and don't go screaming to anyone who'll listen. What happens is that I feel sympathetic for the first few conversations, then I start purposely avoiding said people because, well, I either run out of things to say or just get embarrassed sitting there and not being able to do anything about it.

Emo is short for Emotional. That's the end of the story for me. I can't fault people for being emotional. When they whine constantly, yeah, that's pretty annoying. (Because there's no such thing as an annoying gamer or anything.) Still, people see the world differently. I can see how life would be depressing, although I'm happy with it. It isn't my place to tell somebody if their thoughts are right or wrong.

Here's what I think:
People dislike 'emos' because:
-their style is derived from goth
-their music isn't liked by a lot of non-emos
-they have the reputation of being suicidal
-the stereotype is they cry about their life which isn't entirely bad
-people find them strange because emo isn't the norm and many fear that which they don't know
-and 'emo' attracts a lot of tweens that are into Twilight and such

These aren't my thoughts on emos (I'm goth which apparently gets confused for emo), just reasons why people dislike the style (please no mod wrath)

EDIT: like someone said above me, Emo music like Weezer was good but then MCR and the Used kind of ruined it
I do hate it when people confuse emo and goth. They are not the same thing, period. I'm not part of the ranks of either, but jeez. That's like confusing Japan and China just because they're both in Asia. Also, yes, those were some excellent points. Well, they explain a lot - I don't agree with most of them.

It's not derived from goth, they're not whiny, it's not associated with self harm or depression. Are you all blind or something? I gave you FACTUAL EVIDENCE. This discussion should be over and done with already.

Feel better?

There's the generally thought-of definition of 'emo' that is perpetuated by whiny teenagers and then there's........whatever the hell you're selling. They are both known by the moniker 'emo'.

There's a Plymouth in the UK and a Plymouth in the USA. They're both Plymouth.

Get over yourself, you can act snooty and claim to be 'true' emo all you want but if it isn't what springs to mind when the term 'emo' is stated then you aren't the only ones who can lay claim to that title.

Oh, also a word to the wise. Ranting in capitals? Not a great way to get your 'point' across, especially when that 'point' is laden with insults towards the people you're trying to convince.

You said it already. They are always down and depressed and people don't like having that forced on them so they are just generally avoided and hated. I mean its like normal human instincts or something to like things that make you feel good and avoid things that make you feel bad or depressed.

He is telling you exactly what Emo really is! LISTEN. DON'T JUST COME ON HERE AND REPLY FROM PAGE ONE. READ SOME OF WHAT OTHERS HAVE POSTED.

And to you, BlueCollarTweaker, thank you for being my companion on this thread in the hopefully-not-pointless journey to enlighten the ignorant masses. The music you linked to was pretty awesome. People need to realize that THIS is Emo, not MCR and GC and shit.

Not the cut-up-your-arm emo, the real emo.
They're cool.
The real emos are the cut-up-your-arm ones though...

OT: It all seems like a plea for attention and have yet to meet the one that isnt doing it for attention.

I tend to hate most trendy groups, but honestly, emos are the ones that bug me the most.

Genres grow into new things. Rock isn't what is was back in the 70s, emos are now different then what they used to be.

And, unfortunately for emos lovers, they are trendy ironic attention seeking conformists.

But why do we hate those who choose to wear black and dispise the conformus.
You do realise that since they all dress the same, act the same, look the same etc they are conformist too right?

1) They stand for most teenagers in the way they complain about the state of their own life. Threatening to kill yourself because your girlfriend left you makes me want to kill you myself. There are far worse things yet kids don't seem to understand that living in Africa with aids and dying of starvation after seeing your family raped and murdered by Congo militia is far worse than having your whiny girlfriend leave you.

2) Personally I find jocks and bimbos more irritating. The whole ignorance is bliss thing pisses me off. Why are the stupidest people usually the happiest?

I only hate attention seekers... which some of them secretly are.

"PITY ME CAUSE I'M EMO!" Some of them scream without opening their mouths.

I';m not sure what emo is, everyone just tells me if you don't know then you don't deserve to so meh.
I like to wear dark clothes though XD
I also like puppys candy cosplay and friends.

Style doesn't decide your group does it
