Why cant you kill kids?

ok if we can't kill kids why can't we just beat the fuck out of them?
like the chickens in Zelda. you can hurt them but they don't die.

However, if I remember correctly, in Fallout 3 you can kill kids, but only in the game within the game(In Vault 112, the one with the simulation). In fact that is a mission. You have to kill a kid (and everyone else).
This seems a bit inconsistent. You are not allowed to kill kids in a game, but in a 'game' within it, the death of children is recommended, if not needed.

Really, if I'm gonna be evil, I wanna have a choice in the matter. It's a game, people, not real life. Just the same as I'd like it for there to be animals in GTA to make things realistic...and also to shoot them, or stab them, or whatever. Again, it's a game, and I want the freedom to be morbid.
And, again, it's been done before in Deus Ex, and people remember that game for its kickass storyline and gameplay, and not because you could ax innocent people whenever you damn pleased.

Why can't you kill kids? Maybe because you're not strong enough. Har Har! But seriously, you should have already known the answer before you got 4 pages worth or replies, the debate is whether or not you should be allowed to kill kids in video game. Most of those games that would involve a player killing a child would be meant to adults and that adult should be able to make their own choice. The problem is that those games always get into the hands of children and eventually their parents/guardians learn of the issue too late and they become offended. Parents start whining, game companies get bad press (possibly sued?), politicians start making anti-video game violence laws.
Yeah, it's almost absurd you can't kill the kids in Fallout 3 (those Little Lamplight kids are annoying), but it was Bethesda's way of covering their ass. What would you rather have? A few angry gamers or a a bunch of angry parent complaining about it, making noise on Fox News and getting politicians to make laws hindering video game creativity. I can allow this small "breaking of immersion" in the game, especially considering F3 had so many glitches in the first place. And I think you could kill children in F1 and F2.

In some countries I think there are laws, but yeah, it's culture. If you don't like it, well that's your business, now go convert a few thousand.
Personally, I tend to be more upset at plot bludgeons: I don't miss killing children, but I would have given everything to shoot Reaver dead in Fable 2.

If you really want to kill some kids in video games, just think of it this way, you already are when you kill a regular person ("adult"):
1. All an "adult" is a Big Kid
2. the majority of the adult people carry the seed of potential children inside of them
3. Pretend that everyone has gone to the gypsy machine from the movie "BIG" with tom hanks and all wished to be grown-ups
so there just think of the adults you kill in video games as kids and then your sicko need for killing youths will be satisfied (to an extent).
... if all else fails, start your own game developing company that only makes AO rated games in which you can do all the nasty kid killing your blackened heart desires until your soul is skewered by the righteous spear of karma and then plunged into a dark abyss of insanity.

I really don't think the huge taboo over the killing of children in games is necessary. Especially with some games.
Take Fallout 3 for example. It's rated 18, it can't get much higher. You can't kill children in it, but you CAN hit them with the Mesmetron and ship them over to Paradise Falls, to live a life of slavery and worse. How is that better? Yes, I can understand why they did it, but it's a teeny bit hypocritical isn't it?
It's not that I particularly wanted to kill children. On the contrary. But the choice should be there. It seems a little patronising in a 18 rated game, especially with one like Fallout 3, for the reasons I've already stated.
