Why do you fear death?

I don't fear death as much as I fear an excruciatingly painful death. Dying itself isn't so bad, but, death by drowning, being eating alive, bleeding to death, etc.... That's the scary part, for me at least.

Dying itself, I'm not afraid of. It's how I will die that has me concerned. Well, okay I am slightly afraid of dying in that it's unknown what it will seem like from our point of view just before it happens.. what we see, what we feel, etc.
Otherwise, I'm not bothered by it. I even know my funeral song :D Ordinary Day, by Great Big Sea.

I fear death because it doesn't really give much warning. There's a lot I want to do before I go, and knowing how easily it is to die (even if you don't do anything), it gets kinda freaky at times.

Well i like living. living is pleasurable but sometimes tough. Death is nothing. I dont want to be forgotten ever. I want to be something big, im sure most people want that. And knowing that it probably wont happen and ill end up being a normal guy who is born, goes to school, gets a job, retires and then dies just doesnt sound like the kind of life i want. so I fear death because I'm afraid that in the end nothing I've ever done will have mattered and that if i was never here the world wouldnt have changed at all

Philosophically i don't feel any reason to fear death.
Realistically... being forgotten, or dying without achieving anything of any significance scares me.

I'm not religious either, so there is nothing exciting about death, and no reason to look forward to death.

I suppose, as long as I consider living to be more enjoyable than rotting in the ground, I will value life, and thus fear death.
If my life ceased to be at all interesting, I assume i would no longer fear leaving it.

maybe fear isn't the right word.

If people say they don't. They're either lying to look cool or they are by definition a sociophath. Possibly a psychopath.
To a certain extent, that is bullshit. Yes, everybody is afraid of death, when it's not on their own terms. I'm terrified of let's say getting hit by a bus tomorrow, because there is so much still for me to experience. However, maybe in 60 years time, when i'm old, I can definitely see myself feeling like it's time to go. Also, most people are afraid of the pain associated with death rather than death itself. There's also the fear of the unknown to consider, which is human nature.

Well, when I die, I'll go to heaven, so there isn't much reason to be afraid of dying. Of course, I've still got alot of things to do here, so I wouldn't want to go there just yet.

No reason to fear death.
I fear dying.

When you're dead, you cease to exist, so there's nothing to worry about.
Of course, this isn't something to look forward to either.
Now, the process of dying can be pretty scary, though.
Especially if it's painful or otherwise excruciating, like drowning.
That shit terrifies me.

I don't fear death, I fear dying.
This. :)

I'd be afraid of painful, slow death. I'd fear for my family and friends (not that I think I'm very important, they couldn't live without me. I don't want them to be sad).

And I'm afraid my funeral won't go the way I'd want it.

And this is how I'd want it (concept is still in works :)

I don't want to be buried in a cemetery. I want to be buried on a patch of land reserved for me and my family. When I'm buried, I want a tree to be planted on me (marijuana plant is also an option). So when time passes, the tree grows giving a "timelapse" of my death. So my tree would be the biggest, tallest. And my great great great children's trees would be small.
That, or launched into space.

Second, the funeral: dress code should be funky, funny, nude, serious... anything goes.

I don't want ANY religious speeches, I'd want everyone to say something. Don't care if it's someones philosophy on life, death, God, god, gods... as long as it's from the heart, HONEST ("He was funny, but could be the biggest asshole" - everyone laughs).

I want music! From teary eyed classical music, to funky 70s porn music.
I want it to be a party! Don't just bury me, and then leave me there while you go drinking your asses off. Pour a drink in my soil, throw a bud, tell jokes like I'm still there, for the last time. Make jokes at my expense. Laugh, cry, laugh at people crying for me, then cry for me so they laugh at you.

Also, make the same party annually.

Celebrate my life by celebrating my death. If all these happen, then I don't have any reason to fear death.

I don't really fear it I guess, I mean after it happens you pretty much won't care, because you won't exist.

Actually I think it'd be interesting to know what it's like to not exist. Sucks that you obviously won't live to tell the tale though... Well, and you won't "know what it's like" if you see what I mean. It's impossible to imagine, so I'll just wait and make the most of the time I have.

I don't fear death or the "act" of dying. Quite the contrary, 'tis a lovely thing to do.

Also, I don't agree with OP. When you discuss death, you obviously turn only to Western points of view on it. There is another HALF OF THE WORLD with completely different cultural and religious experience on the subject, and it's not to be neglected. So, we are NOT all in agreement to that.
And no, I don't fear that it will take away everything from me. The only part that saddens me is that we are so connected and associated with suffering when it comes to death of others. The damage done almost never can be repaired after a loss like that.

I don't. That doesn't mean that I want to die, I just don't fear it and accept it will happen eventually.
thats me exactly, i dont fear death but im not keen on the idea of dying just yet... death is another stage in life we all have to face so man-up and face it with a grin (and a shotgun if one is at hand)

I dont fear death, im just not ready for it, if it comes i will fight it untill there is no hope, then i will embrace it, death is the end to the game called life, i rather die once i have accomplished my goal, then i rather not live long, or much longer than i have to

I dont fear death (I am ready to die at any time), what I do fear is what is waiting for me on the other side. Anyone agree?

the last true frontier, to find out what happens after you die. The last scientific venture one will ever go on, the last scrap of knowledge to be gleaned, the greatest revelation of them all. I can not help but wonder at times what will happen, and fear at times as well, but to find out what will happen is so glorious in and of it self. Venture into the light and see what you may.
I'll be brutally honest, you just made death so much more badass for me. That is exciting, well not death but what you described.
