I think also partly, that it's fairly easy at least until you hit 80 and start raiding (please don't flood with 'lol raiding is sooo easy'), it's my opinion.

You don't get heavily penalised for any mistakes, and you get all sorts of rewards and achievments for any kind of playstyle you choose. It makes you feel like you're doing well, instead of repeatedly slapping you in the face for sucking, for about the same level of ability. It also gently teaches you stuff without walls'0'text, and you can play all the way thru to early raiding without referring to websites to learn about specifics and statitistics.

A lot of people are just hateful towards a huge success and want to believe that WOW sucks because it's popular, just because Justin Beiber and Simon Cowell are popular with millions.

As for the grind, didn't Halo just have you shoot stuff from the first room to the last? does Madden not just have you run forward with a ball for hours on end? Hell you can break Portal down to jumping and shooting holes in stuff if you want to mindlessly criticise.

I'm not denying there's some grind in there, but mostly it's avoidable, and if you stop enjoying it, it's probably time to move on to a new game.

Its the best and most accessible MMO out there at the moment, hopefully that will change with the release of The Old Republic or even Guild Wars 2.

WoW costs $12 a month, tell me what game you can buy for $12 that has as much content/community and constant updates as WoW?
Maybe in America but not where i live.
Where i live a gamecard cost 50$ to 60$. So i would rather spend my money on food for me and my family, but to me WOW isint that appealing and i think its not worth my hard-earn 60$.
Also gaming is a hobby so if you are willing to invest 50 to 60 dollars(in your case, 12$) then im fine with it.

Well then order a time card online and have them scan the image to you. Seriously just because shops near you have it priced at that doesn't mean that's what it costs. Or use a credit card and pay for 1 month? Which is $12. That's fixed i'm pretty sure across countries i'm sure.

The point is, a time card is not $50-60 wherever you live, buy online and it's the internet price.

Blizzard has game time for sale on their website, better prices than Game cards, especially if you buy the 6 month (180 days) sub.
