Haha. I liked this a lot. I'm catholic however, just so long as you call it civil union, and don't scream in my face while I'm enjoying my nice bowl of instant oatmeal ( he's right, so delicious it SHOULD be banned) I'm perfecly okay with them doing what they want.
to quote Mr. Thomas Jefferson on the issue of religeon
" If a man proclaims there to be 20 Gods, or no God at all, why should I care? It neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket" Yes yes, I know I got a part of it wrong, I just wanted to convey the message
But marriage is a legal act, not one of religion. If you don't want certain people being married in your church, I can understand that. But marriage itself existed long, long before Catholicism and is purely a legal issue nowadays.

Did you get attacked by a lemon?

Great first thread by the way. Well done.

Otherwise, spot on
I don't think it's proven exactly. I've seen a few conflicting studies in the issue and believe sexuality (real sexual urges, not simply how one acts on them or how they behave for the sake of culture - an entirely different issue) to be entirely genetic.

That's just my opinion and I'm well open to being proven wrong.

I found this video and thought I'd share. Pretty old now, but I've only seen it today.

What do you think?

I thought it was great. The (sarcastic) points were pretty funny and actually hold up nicely as counterpoints to a lot of anti-homosexuality arguments. The editing was a tad annoying, but whatever.
"Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears!
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him."

I hope you are familiar with that quote, it is taking the opposing argument and representing it in the worst light is a very effective way of proving your point and getting past the linguistic traps of obfuscation that the anti-gays use.

Compressing their argument down to a neat essential point and instantly countering it with irony is a great arguing style.

The only response the anti-gays would have it to attack from a completely different direction, but I don't think there is one left.

My eyes were surprised by link I received one day from a friend via MSN. If I had gone in expecting what I saw I'd have been fine. When you are sitting in the living room surrounded by family? Well, then it's very, very awkward XD

Never again will I party with lemons!

I approve of this video. Funny and shows the stupidity of some people.

A 'First I was then I loled' picture would do quite nicely in here.

Exactly. This is one of the reasons I love Marcus Brigstocke, or Charlie Brooker, or comedians like that. They make their point by destroying the opposite view by giving examples and then pointing out the gaping flaws.

I might regret this, but what link? What did you see, that could not be unseen?

Socially, Pride events are nice to attend sometimes because it is nice to not have to feel like you are an invisible minority. The sensation of being in a large group and knowing that everyone around you is GLBTQ can be a very liberating and empowering feeling. Unless you know what it is like, you won't know what it is like - I don't see how else I can explain it. But for a lot of people, it is a powerful thing.
You're so right, and even as someone who doesn't really like a lot of the identity politics which go into LGBT campaigning and politics, I have to say pride is amazing and I really wouldn't miss it for the world any more.

I don't know where so many straight people often have this crazy idea that the whole thing of people wanting to be publically seen, which yes I think is an important part of the pride movement, is for their benefit or trying to get a response from them.

I remember my friend cried during Pride London last year because she saw a gay couple with a young child. It turned out we'd both always assumed, growing up in different parts of rural England, that we'd never be able to have children with same sex partners without sparking tabloid headlines, because that's the only place you'd ever hear about gay adoption. For her as a lesbian to realize that it was possible to just live a normal life, to have children, that was an emotional experience.

So no, sorry straight people. Pride doesn't revolve around you, even if the rest of the world might. It's much more about speaking to LGBT people, especially those who might be closeted or have difficulty with their sexuality or might not necessarily feel much joy or happiness in it or who might have been raised, like me, in less than gay-friendly circumstances. As the name should really suggest, it's about giving those people reason to feel good about their sexuality.

So yeah, drop the 'the gay mafia are rubbing their sexuality in my face' crap and consider the function of a wedding ring, of a wedding itself, of keeping a picture of your kids on your desk at work. The only reason noone ever calls heterosexuals up on 'rubbing their sexuality in everyone's face' is because most of you don't see your sexuality for what it is. It's not universal, everything in the world doesn't link back to it or cater to it. Pride is actually one of the things which really doesn't, so maybe stop getting so defensive about it, hmm?

Sorry for the language, but OMG! That guy was hilarious! :,D
Awesome video, I like how confused people seem to get about this.
:p (don't) read the youtube comments and you'll see that just about 10% of the users understand what this video really is about. Which is good for youtube I guess...

I don't read up on studies but from my perspective I have to think it's more genetic than environment. I was raised Baptist (ugh) but from an early age I knew I liked both boy's & girl's even being brought up in a very & I mean a VERY straight environment. I had no contact or any other influence other than straight life till my teens & found my fathers Bisexual porn. By accident of coarse *wink* so just from growing up this way both Bi & Trans that I have to think it's more genetic imo.

You know what's really horrible?
I just know that there is someone somewhere watching that video and appropriating the satirical points at face value.
And that makes me a saaaad Panda.

For more information on the subject matter, Here's the genius Stewart Lee:

OP: Good video. I greatly enjoy satire as a form of argument :)

As to the topic of gay marriage, I'm a bit neutral on the matter. On one hand, I have absolutely no problem with legal homosexual marriage. I think it's a great practice that gets gay couples the benefits of a married couple, such as insurance prices or hospital visiting privileges.

On the other hand, I'm not quite comfortable with the idea of a homosexual couple being married in a church or other religious establishment (Unless of course that religion supports gay marriage. In which case go ahead.)

Basically, I've got no problem with acknowledging the rights of a gay couple to get married. But, we should also pay attention to the right of a church/place of worship to deny a gay marriage since, as far as I'm aware, most religions state that homosexuality is a sin. It would be rather unfair to force them to go against their beliefs.

Thoughts?
Here in the UK churches do deny gay couples the right to get married in the church (a few are ok with it, but none where I live, so I'm not sure how many) but the government gives what is called a 'civil partnership' instead. Which is the exact same as marriage, to keep both sides happy.

A very well done video. It's irony is perfect.

Most great men were gay, which leads me to believe that maybe straight people are good at only being straight and reproducing, while the gay population are for philosophy and science, as they are not burdened with infatuation for women. Wow, I was sort of thinking while I wrote, and this sounds like it's probably a bit true.
