You tricked me! You sneaky, sneaky OP, you. No, but on topic, that video was great. Effectively shoots down all the bull crap excuses people who oppose it use to cover up the fact that they're bigots.

Well, sure, the guy in the video is pretty cool, but I'm Australian, so direct some of that love over to us. We're pretty cool and without me you'd have never found it!

Hermaphrodites should inherit the earth. The pinnacle of evolution, really. Starfish do pretty well, and they aren't ever fully Herms.
Hermaphrodites are so extremely rare and are almost 100% of the time given surgery upon birth to "correct" the issue.

I won't even try to say that is wrong or to question the parent's choice. I've never been in that situation and I find it extremely understandable to want your baby to be normal and have the best chance at fitting in to society and feeling comfortable. But I do find it sad that gender roles and sexes are so important to us that this course of action is the "obvious" course of action.
I know exactly what you mean. Hermaphrodites would just be "too weird" to survive in society. They'd end up on freakshows and such.

Evolution is fine and dandy until the current batch decide they're the best. Then, anything different is considered "wrong".
Every batch thinks it's the best. Survival depends on individuals promoting their own genes. (Humans do this in a roundabout way by promoting the genes of their extended family, and occasionally of a larger group of people)

Also, it took a whole pile of evolutionary developments to give us the capacity to reason, morally and otherwise. Injustices probably arose nigh simultaneously with the ability to judge them as injustices...

I think what I'm trying to say is that the same capacity for thought that allows someone to persecute someone else for no good reason allows you, and other good people, to condemn that persecution.

It's one of those things I absolutely HATE to say, but until society changes, I don't know if it's fair to ask a child to live that way. They could love it, not care or hate it, but the way they could be treated would just be... heartbreaking and possibly deadly to them on top of those personal feelings. Very difficult.
Its a vicious circle. Society will only change if it's forced to. Some people will have to suffer the prejudice if society is going to accept them. Its a terrible thing, but change requires suffering. Otherwise nothing changes.

Probably the most awesome phrase I heard this week!
Thanks. I was quite happy with it :)

Pretty much. When we hadn't evolved to the level of questioning ourselves, someone slightly different may not have been persecuted, because we wouldn't have been able to decide what is "normal".

It might. But it's nothing something I'd be willing to do or endorse. I was pretty badly bullied during my school life and perhaps due to that ended up in hospital after a suicide attempt. Knowing what the child would more than likely go through is just not something I could get behind. No matter how I personally feel on the issue.

It is a sad and vicious circle, change will always require suffering, but those that have to endure the suffering will never want others to have to go through it.I know I certainly wouldn't want to put people through the crap I had to deal with.

I've never liked gender roles. They helped us (humans) evolve and fight our way to the top of the food-chain, but in today's modern society they are completely outdated and need to be exiled from public consciousness.
cause androgyny is so sexy unless, of course, you are not attracted to androgynous people in which case femininity/masculinity aka gender characteristics are hot.

Your fallacy is assuming that we've stopped evolving as a species. This is not true. One cannot intellegently decide gender roles are irrelevant. Only natural selection can. If it still exists, there's generally a reason.
I was stating that I personally dislike them and find them useless in my life. I don't know where Man's evolution will take us so I wouldn't comment on that.
You stated that they're outdated and need to be exiled from public consciousness in the same sentence as stating they have been useful in previous evolution. That's not a statement about personal preference... that's a statement claiming they are irrelevant and need to be abolished due to evolutionary irrelevance.

Unless you meant something completely different, in which case, that's probably what you should have typed instead. I rebutted to what you actually wrote.

Oh I'm not endorsing it!!! I wouldn't wish that level of persecution on anybody!

Thats the problem, though. Someone would have to make that choice; 'correct' the abnormality, or leave it, letting the child suffer prejudice for the betterment of the human race and society.

I know I couldn't make that choice.

The fact that it's a child who cannot make that choice themselves pushes it over the line for me. I just couldn't do it. No matter how much could be gained, knowing what society could do to them... No way. Not me.

Could I ask what it is you went through?

Exactly. In my opinion they are worthless and need to go. I could be objectively wrong, but personally I feel that way.

Raised as a Christian, I believe in love the sinner, hate the sin. Hope that clarifies, I'm kinda used to people seeing me as a bit strange.
Is that supposed to make you seem like less of a jackass?
"hello, I think you're an abomination but at least I don't hate you, yayz."
It's a start I guess but you might want to ditch the backwards christian moral system and work on one of your own, because i sense you're smarter then this.

Oh, I see where you're coming from.

I don't think someone needs to be the martyr, though. I hope (maybe foolishly) that people could be talked into seeing some sort of logic and thus would choose not to attack others based on their gender or sexual preference.

God I hope.

I'm going to be honest, anyone who can't tell the real meaning of that video is an idiot. I acknowledge that text can be misleading, and some people have trouble reading tone, but if you are unable to see the point behind saying 'gay marriage will encourage other people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people makes you tall,' is just stupid.

And if you can't be bothered to watch the video, even if it might be an honest one, then why exactly are you debating on the subject anyway? A debate requires two sides, and if you aren't going to listen to the other side then you aren't debating, you're just shouting loudly.

I did like the video, I thought it was a nice parody of people who actually mean it when they say this. And although it started slow by the end it had me laughing.

"Instant oatmeal is weird... we should ban that too."

And I said, 'oatmeal? Are you crazy?!?'

[sup]I'm amazed I'm the first one to make that joke, as far as I can tell...[/sup]

On topic, I don't really know what else there is to say. Homosexuality is fine, as demonstrated in this rather humorous video. Fight the good fight, and so on.
