I hate obesity. It makes it so hard to find clothes that fit me.(Wal-mart is prejudiced against skinny people)
I thought Greece was first as well.

And America is awesome because I live there. You should all come visit.
It's probably changed since then I guess. *shrugs*

And I will visit if you take me to Disneyland!

American Thinks Its awesome because we have the most revoulutionary idea.

A whole country not based on race or creed or religion but FREEDOM.

Also we are in our teenage years historacly so we think we can take on the whole world.

America's awesome because we got lucky. Seriously, we were almost stopped by the Great Depression during our rise to power, but luckily World War 2 came along to bolster our industrialization (take note of this term). Industrialization is what started America's rise to power and then kept it going. The Nazis tried to take this from us in the second world war, but the truth is: we do it faster and we do it better.

And then we won the Cold War. Why? Because of guys like Gorbachev. Again, that's another stroke of luck. With the Cold War over, only one real superpower remained.

America is awesome because it started with the right idea and amazing luck has pushed it along.

ok now bear in mind I am about to simply argue for the sake of argument now. As I said I like America, but still...here we go. (put's asshole hat on)

I think America is awesome because there is a reason why the rest of the world comes HERE to study

I think America is awesome because we are worried that we are no longer doing HALF of the worlds science

I think America is awesome because we own up to what we do

I think America is awesome because we are an incredibly diverse people, both ideologically and racially. Nowhere else in the world can you experience the vast array of cultures that are present in the US

I think America is awesome because our people can slander our president and not get sent to jail for it

I think America is awesome because we provide defense systems to countries that would have to go without if we weren't here (patriot missiles in poland.... etc)

I think America is awesome because all of those nutjobs who promised their neighbours that they would move to Canada if Bush won, are still here.

I think America is awesome because we do not have a socialized health care system, so innovation is allowed to continue, unlike countries like Canada where there are enormous waiting lists for basic services (One Canadian cancer patient, this was in Discover magazine, was on a 6 month waiting list for an MRI. His doctor told him that he would be dead in 5 months. So, what did he do? He hopped on a plane to the US, and had his MRI in 3 days. Thats progress.)

America is the most hated country in the world, because we aren't afraid of stepping on a few toes to achieve what is usually best for everyone. Have we made mistakes? Hell yes! We fuck up all the time. The difference is that even though the rest of the "Civilized World" treats us as unclean gun toting hicks, we honestly don't give a shit, and go ahead fighting the good fight. What the hell have the Europeans enlightened Europeans done in Darfur: answer, they haven't lifted a damn finger! I absolutely love all of the people posting in this thread who say that they hate America. Well, if you hate it so much, leave, because the grass is always greener on the other side of the hill!

Right.

You called Communism 'oppressive' so you either have the american flag tattooed to your arse or your middle name is America. Communism is an ideology of a classless structure, one that works AGAINST oppression. And since when has America protected the world from communism?

You give out more money than any other foreign government because you are the richest nation on earth. However there are many promised obligations and responsibilities that you have not followed through.

The reason they go to you to study is probably because they couldn't get into Oxford.

You don't own up to what you do. And if you do, then it takes years of protest and public outcry, or simply because you have no choice but to do so. Look how long it took for Bush to say what he did in Iraq was wrong, and it wasn't like a public declaration either, he kind of left it as a passing comment. And don't even get me started on the Iran-Contra Affair.

There is somewhere else where you can experience such a diverse array of cultures, it's called great Britain, or hell, let's just go for London.

There are many places you slander your president/prime minister and get away with it, London for one, Italy for another.

The science part is due to the funds that you own, that is why you ended up doing such a large percentage, and that is a good thing after all.

As for the healthcare part, isn't Cuba's far better than your's, Britains, or anyone elses for that matter?

The missiles in Poland are simply there to flex the American muscle, because they simply want to rattle some cages on the Russian front, to me the protection of poland is a byproduct. The chances of Russia invading poland are low, the last time someone invaded poland they got their arse handed to them, and publicly. If they were invaded now many major countries would go there to help. What stopped America from giving them the financial power and means to defend themselves, rather than openly installing missiles to increase tension?

No one is shooting said nutjobs, it's not like their lives are in danger, plus this is hardly a valid comment, there are people who would say that they would leave their country for various reasons, and are still there, part of the reason being because they aren't keen on drastic change.

What tends to happen is that the 'stepping on a few toes' ends up being violation of international law, and murdering millions for something that is better in theory, but in practice makes things worse.

It is one thing to like America, but the weapons-grade Jack-assery that you appear to be showing in that post is something I can't sit idly by and let stay unscrutinised.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Greece is the fattest country in the world if you go by BMI.
All I know is that last year all the 'Current Affair' shows were alll freaking out coz Australia had been deemed the fattest nation in the world with something like 65% of us being overweight or some bollocks.
EDIT: Oops.

P.S. there was no intent of hate speech whatsoever in the last post, and like one has said many times America is a good place, but it is not the Paragon of perfection like some imply.

I like it, but let's not sprinkle glitter on dog shit when it comes to the bad points.

P.P.S the Oxford part was wrong to say really, one goes to different universities for different fields of learning, but Oxford is damn near impossible for people to get into unless they have some kind of upper class background or are some kind of prodigy.

Also, one still has not answered the question:

What is the deal with being patriotic or proud to be an American? Why do people always say 'I am proud to be an American'?

I might just start a thread if one does not exist.

EDIT: I forgot to say in the last post, Europe were ASKED to get involved in Darfur, they did not decide it was best to storm into there without prior request.

Well i actually do not think that america is so awesome (not anymore ti be true).
That has different reasons wich i willnot now explain wide and long, cause everyone can guess he one or other.

But mostly it is just cause i love the green lands and woods and the oldtowns, small villages and citys with oldtowncentres and such of my homecounty Germany.

Althougth you still have to be carefull to say such thing.

Hate to say this, but you can find crazy Christians just about anywhere.
Have you met a Texan before? I almost had my arse handed to me for making a political observation about democrats. Oh and the person that was going to hand said arse was a Golfer from at a high end country club. It was when good ol' Condoleezza Rice was being questioned before she took office. Not hate speech, just a bad experience.

I REALLY want to work in New York someday, so... let hope that when the job opportunity arises they don't find this post and then spread the news story "'Putin' - new Smithsonian Director". That would not go down well.

I love America because it's my home, and because it's where I was raised and where I plan on raising my kids. Most of the stuff people see in the media and on television are horrible stereotypes anyway, but that's the case with every country and every race of people. Sure, America has her problems, but then again, what countries don't have problems?

Damn. I was going to pull apart his argument before I saw your post. I pretty much agree with most of what you said. The phrase "communist oppression" made me laugh aswell :)

Because being told to think that has been hammered into them since they were born. It was and still is done by the government as well as the media. In other words, the rich and the powerful, the only ones truly benefiting from America's corporate system. Also, they're the only ones who have the power to do so. (They control the mass media and the government.)

It's just a vicious circle. The working class people in America are being shit on by the rich and they're taught to love it. They're caught in a perpetual rat race with the rich dangling "opportunity" in their faces, like that old cliche of dangling a carrot in front of a horse. All hail the mighty dollar.

I think America is awesome because we are the only country to love the best sport in the world, football.

I think America is awesome because we have a section of government (the courts) that keep the idiots we elect to office in check.

I think America is awesome because we develop some awesome technology over here.

I think America is awesome because we have the best college system in the world.

I think America is awesome because, while it sometimes is a problem, we place much reverence on our freedoms, which I feel is important in order to maintain those freedoms.

Just a few reasons why I think my country is awesome. Not that it doesn't have it's own fair share of problems though...
One of your points I would completely disagree with. From what I know, America's college system is by far one of the most corrupt college systems in the world. It doesn't matter how smart someone is, if they don't have the money to get into the top end universities/colleges then they're not going to. It's a system that basically helps the rich people stay rich.

Just another little thing I wanted to ask was whether or not you've watched any rugby? If I'm being honest I've never sat down to watch a game of American football, but from what I've seen it seems fairly similar to rugby, minus all the padding and helmets.

In all reality, I couldn't care less what country is rated more obese then the other, but your comment was shining with such an illuminating ignorance, that I couldn't help myself but call you out on it.

I haven't numbered my point's, so I don't think you responded to all of them, so I will do this to what I think you have responded to.

1. That is the people running the communist ideology, not the ideology itself. And why did you choose North Korea? Why not Cuba? And cuba is one of the nations that Could have done a lot better had America not interfered (One example being the embargo) and is possibly one of the countries that disprove the whole 'communism is evil' nonsense that has gone around for long enough.

2.Who said where I am from, we do not give out money? because I sure didn't. And for your information we do.

3. I know, but the rest of the world does NOT go to america to study. How about some kind of citation before you throw claims like that around. Besides Why do so many Americans and other people come to Britain to Go to Oxford?

4. I don't understand what point this was aimed at. Please show me and I will respond accordingly.

5. Because Oxford is one of the best Universities in the world. I would assume that if all had your mentality then many universities would be quite empty.

6. Why?

7. What?

8. The Invasion of Grenada.
