Why is it always subs over dubs?

For me it depends on the anime, some actually sound better Dubbed then subbed (Hellsing and the Hellsing ova's...Crispin freeman is just an epic Alucard), Some are passable (Black Lagoon and Death note), others...just downright fail dubbed (Elfen lied, as much as i love it, had a HORRIBLE english dub).
Subs, because the Japanese language is sexy.
Plus I hate it when the mouth movements don't match up, that annoys me to no end.
Plus sometimes dubs are horrible.
Plus, when watching dubbed, I feel foolish, like I needed them to westernize it before I, the ignorant foreigner, could enjoy it. Maybe that's silly, but there it is.

Since I live in a foreign country, every media I watch is either dubbed, or it has subs. I prefer subs, because even when I watch something in my own language, I may miss something they say, so subs are better, for me anyways.
Also, some dubs are terrible, and I want to always see the media in its original form.

I think it's better to watch something with subtitles whenever possible, anime or not, simply because dubbing makes me laugh.
This. Definitely this. A trillion times this. I like watching my anime the way it was intended to be made. If the dubs are good enough, I might consider seeing it dubbed, but apart from that, I completely agree with this post.Aby_Z said:

Also, I usually associate dubbing with heavy handed edits, on the part of the studio that brought the show to the English speaking populace. Plus, most anime that I have seen dubbed has been kid-ified. For year, I had no idea how bloody Dragonball Z was, or that they did not even bring certain episodes of Pokemon across the water as the episodes depicted different religious festivals that the company felt would be seen as too 'pagan' to the Concerned Mothers Of America.

censorship issues is mostly why i prefer subbed to dubbed, but i can say that there are some animes i have prefered dubbed one being hellsing, part because i find it strange that characters living in england are speaking japanese wierd but mostly because i think the dub was actually better
dubbed anime might as well be american cartoons.
Anything they find too hard to translate, or any cultural references they can't be fucked explaining just get changed completely to better suit the average american palette.
Dubbed anime is changed to fit what the dubbers think appeals most to a western audience, thus losing it's grounding in japanese culture, and is altered from being a Japanese animation to an American cartoon with art drawn by Japanese animators.
That aside the voice actors themselves are awful, the accents never fit (though I do admit I like dubbed Sephiroth in advent children) and any japanese names or phrases the voice actor attempts to pronounce they fail at utterly.
The english over the top of a japanese show just doesn't work, an american swinging around a katana yelling out random japanese words is just...wrong.
Also, those of us who watch anime outside of america, find the added factor of the dubs not only being in english, but with american-english, usually low budget voice actors, quite unbearable.
To those of you who have played or are playing FF13, I have read many comments from people bitching about the Australian voice actors in it, and me, being Australian, actually prefers some of the roles voiced by Australians to the American ones. However, that being said, I would still prefer Japanese voices to Australian ones.
So to those Americans who loathe the Australian voice acting in FF13, this is how the rest of the world looks at American voice acting.

'Course it does! One benefit of subs is that it's good for listening practice when you're learning the language. You can read and listen and try to pick up on things you're learning and how they sound. Despite living in Japan for 2 years, I'm still nowhere near fluent in Japanese, and listening is the hardest thing about any foreign language for me. Watching subs has been good for me in the way I described. However, someday I would love to be able to watch anime in Japanese without subs and be able to understand it. Given the subject matter of most anime, though, that day is a very long way off. Gonna have to learn a lot of perhaps difficult words that I probably won't use for any other purpose.NeutralDrow said:

I believe for me, it's usually because the dubs are done half-assed more often than not. When you get an American dubbed anime, it usually tends to be by a voice actor who isn't terribly good, at all.
Not to mention a lot of the dialogue is cut or changed in order to make it so the American voice-over can be filmed without cursing (too much) or they will have gotten a new line. For instance, Naruto...the American voice-over is decent enough, but he never said 'Believe it!' every other line.

I prefer subs because the dubs tend to be wierd, out of sync, or in some cases do not make any sense at all. I've got bad experience with dubs, the actors for dubs aren't allways that great.
That's not to say that the subs don't do any mistakes either, I've seen some sentences on subs that didn't make sense no matter how many times I watched it over. It's just that I prefer subs as the subs have a better reputation with me.

I'm fairly neutral in this debate. For me, it really all depends on the series. Some dubs are good, some are bad. One series may sound really natural in Japanese while another may befit English better.
I had borrowing a series called "Rune Soldier" from my brother a while back. I'd seen the series before in English but this time I tried watching it in Japanese with subtitles. Let me tell you... I HATED the Japanese version! Maybe the official subs were just crap, but the dialogue just seemed so bland by comparison. Sub might be like "I'll slay you before you can cast any spells", whilst the dub is more "I'll cut you down before you can say 'Abra Cadabra' and all the magic in the world wouldn't save you." To top it all off, the English thief sounded much more believable than the cliche girly pitch of her Japanese counterpart.

The voice acting just seems better in Japanese if you dont speak the language, like how songs in a different language sound better, like Dota compared to that english version of Dota about some girl or something.
Also, i watched naruto subbed a few years back, and recently cartoon network has been airing some of those episodes (My sister watches them) dubbed, and the voice acting was on par with the 4kids one piece BS.

I prefer subs <.< because my lingual japanese isn't so bad as to make out what people are saying when I'm brushing my hair or texting to my friends in the middle of play o.o I know that should be an argument for dubbed anime, but I cant stand most voice actors.

Honestly I am no fan of animé* - but I prefer everything I watch to be in its actual, native language. Movies, TV-Shows... Whatever. Everything should just be subbed.
In Denmark we have never really "done" dubbing on the television - instead we have always done subbing. This means that I cringe whenever I go to Germany to visit family and turn on the TV. Bruce Willis with a voice that is definitely not Bruce Willis... And in German. Christ! That shit is fucked.
So basically I would prefer subs on animé.
*The only two animé(s?) I've watched has been Naruto(stopped that because of the fucking preteen asshole characters) and Naruto:Shippuden.(Stopped that because it was boring in the end.)
