i prefer subs... lets me expierence as close to the original as possible... though i suppose it depends entirely on the voice acting...

dubs tend to be butcherd with allot of slicing&dicing and bad voice acting sometimes makes a dub bad I personaly dont care there are a few excellent dubs out there

It's probably already been said, but I don't like anime dubs because it seems like they have 5 different voice actors for every anime translated into english and most aren't very good, or the vocie just doesn't fit the character.

I can't stand how the American voice actors all sound the same, regardless of gender. At least in Japanese I can tell the differences between each voice actor. I don't know if the Japanese voice acting is good, but to me it sounds more varied at least.

I don't find that I miss anything whilst reading subtitles, but I read fairly fast.

Well for one, I have been watching a series called One Piece.

One Piece is basicly pirates with X-men power. So how can you go wrong? Bloody fights, bad guys you want to see beaten down, characters you can least like, growing personalities, and a like for shattering the cliche time to time.

This great series was SLAUGHTERED by a American Dub company called 4kids. They censored words, kanji, even english words that would say "food" on a resturant. A Man who's body was basicly smoke and smoked cigars named "Smoker" computer edit the cigars, call him Chaser and yet he has smoke coming from his mouth.... Sanji the smoking cook had his cigs turned into Lollipops as well the Third episode of having a hostage taken with a pirate like flintlock pistol is turned into a goony, Wili.E Coyote extending boxing glove gizmo with a hammer. And voice acting, jesus the sterotypes never ended. Where they avoided violence and smoking they would turn black characters white, give the most racist over done over the top voices to a character it was sickening to listen to... Female wearing a cowboy hat, make her a southernbell hick...slightly over weight character make them gasp and wheeze, blond female? Make her a bubble head...

Now Picture Heavy Metal played on TNN yes, the Tennessee channel... They heavily edited out anything to do with swearing, blood, sexual material (anything even mention) and drugs... well they cut a 90 minutes movie into a 39 minute fever dream of "WTF" 4Kids dub was like ruining Fightclub to be as nice as the smurfs.

So my point, certain dub companies think they can basicly ruin anothers art, story, and creative spirit and try and make it a crappy show to sell kids toys.

Friendship....

Friend friend friend.
In this series, it is spewed almost as bad as a pokemon episode.

In 9 out of 10 times they are wanting to use a term, Nakama means colleague, compatriot, or comrade.

Friend is a amazingly weak translation. It's someone to can rely on, a crew member, someone who would pull you out of the fire, save the ship, damn near family.

Funimation has corrected several of the censorship issues...and released it raw to watch in all it's bloody fighting glory. But they still are weak on the whole "Nakama" thing and hearing friend to many times seriously ruins the closeness of the characters and makes you think your watching a crappy carebear show.

I for one, will watch both... I seen old dubs like Eva, that to cut costs in the older days seemed to twist stories to match peoples mouth movements than translate. Now with computers making it cheaper and not trying to slaughter a VHS tape in a videotoaster it doesn't happen so much.

So, English voice actors are ok...depending on studios. Funimation is true to the art. I've met a lot of their actors and they even have a translation team so "Someone set us up the bomb." and "All of your bases are belong to us." translations don't happen.

I like subbed over dubbed because a majority of the time, the dub voice actors bother me. Somehow they always seem to get the most annoying people to do the voices.

I mostly do not care but if i get used to a certain voice i like to stick with it.
So i will watch dragon ball with dubs and ghost in the shell with subs because i do not want the characters to have a different voice.

Three things I've noticed:

1)For some reason Japanese voices speaking Japanese fits alot better, and just sounds awesome with all the tone they hit.

2) the people who do the voice-overs can never do justice to the characters

3)After a while (at least for me), my voice reading the subs in my head merged with the voices of the characters so it was like the best of both worlds in my head

Subs are better (IMO) simply because they tend to fit the anime characters better.

American voice actors tend to sound too "kiddy" to me. It always feels to me like the american dubbers are phoneing it in, and don't really care about the show.

I've enjoyed watching foreign films in the past and I normallyy watch them subtitled, why, because I've compared them to the narrated versions and not only does the awkward lip-synching get on your nerves but their normally done by cheesy American voice-actor wannabes.

Using Bleach as an example here,
The voice acting is great with subs (In my opinion) and I really don't mind reading the subs themselves or anything.
But the few episodes that I've had to watch dubbed were weird. The first thing was that all the male characters sounded almost EXACTLY the same, it was almost hard to watch.
