Why is it always subs over dubs?

Your really missing out on some good anime if your stubborn to read. (not sure about clannad I'm using the dub as an example)
Alot of times now days the english VAs are picked by the creators in japan, so often times if your not prejudiced towards the purest form of their voices, at lest for the main characters, they match the japan voices pretty well.
Some anime are just hard to read the subs without pausing, code gesss comes to mind there is a ton of dialogue and sometimes it overlaps making it hard to read without pausing the thing every 30 seconds just to catch it all, so i prefer code geass dubbed, even with the horrific nunally actor, since i am not big on pausing things just to read it all.
Subs do tend to me more accurate tho since they often change phrases and wordings around to lip synch it better, old animes were horrible tho dbz and the like comes to mind, you could watch it sub and dubbed and come away with 2 entirely different understandings of the plot and the specific details. Newer animes tend to try to be more faithful however and do a better job of trying to keep things in line.
Often time for more popular animes it seems they kid the dialogue up, naruto springs to mind where the fan subs have a good bit of the f word and general cursing and such, that is entirely cleaned up for US consumption, now maybe the fan subs take some liberties i dunno since i have no clue what the f bomb sounds like in japanese. But considering that animes are usually targeted at more adult and young teen audiences in japan where over here they are aimed more at children, it makes sense that the japan stuff would be more adult period.
I think now days the dubs are way way more accurate overall and there some really good voice actors working for the english ones tho so i think it just comes down to personal tastes and how well you can stand the less talented VAs.

I hate all English dubs for all imported Japanese shows, the only exception to that is DBZ, I grew up on that in English and I find it more amusing rather than annoying. I want my subs in America please, so I never have to hear all the stupid same actors who never change their voice in anything they're in, especially for games. It's mostly because dubs are really annoying and can pretty much ruin a good movie/ anime if done wrong. Also, there's the "Hey, he stopped talking a couple seconds ago, but his mouth's still moving!"

This is my opinion exactly. Not all dubs are terrible, in fact, I recall the first anime I ever saw (not counting 4Kids stuff as a child) was Elfen Lied last year, and the dubbing of that was actually pretty good. Plus, whoever did Lucy's voice should win some sort of anime award for the sultriest and sexiest voice acting I've seen in animation...Fusoiya said:

But I digress. I've seen plenty more anime since then and I always choose dubs over subs. However, admittedly sometimes the dubs can be pretty bad, but even in those cases I'd much rather hear stuff in English than be staring at subtitles at the bottom of the screen for every episode and risk missing half the stuff actually happening. Besides, if I wanted to read the words instead of hear them then I'd have started reading manga instead by now...

I usually prefer the subbed version over the dubs.
The usual problem i have with dubs is not the voice acting itself, at least not in the english version. It's more like the terrible translated script, that the poor voice actors have try to make the best out of it. Some good examples are Crispin Freeman (Arucard in Hellsing, Kyon in Haruhi and Jeremiah Gottwald in Code Geass) and Liam O'Brien(Lloyd Asplund in Code Geass and i really did like him als Lezard Valeth in Valkyrie Profile 2, i also recall him doing Gaara in the Naruto series but i quit that before shippuden). What most annoys me are some badly translated likes or inappropriate moans.
I'd like to argue that the japanese voice actor are more in contact with the director itself and it ends more in the favor of his vision, while the translations might be not as precise as they they should be.
Although some recently dubs were quite enjoyable. The english Code Geass dub was quite awesome. I totaly didn't expect it to be that good. None of the usual stuff that lets you feel like your toe nails are curling up.
While the english dubs appear to get better lately the german one don't realy seem to be able to take off any more. Death note could maybe be the higlight, but the rest just seams aweful.
In our case it might be more related to the actors but the script also pays its tribute in awfulness. On wednesday Final Fantasy Advent Children aired in the german free tv. I've seen it before and i remember that it was a "ok" movie to see, but what i percieved there was just sub par. The voice actor were fitting the characters sufficiently, yet the arch enemy namely known as awful translated script stroke again.
@ Hellsing Comparisson: Good lord, what have they done to the german version of Rip and Schoedinger. Creativity in solving a problem is usually not a bad thing but in the anime context i like it as close to the original as possible. An exception might be the Hellsing ultimate seen here. I might go as far as saying that i like the english version better.
As a conclussion i might state that it could be a thing of perception of one owns language. And others which you are not natively speaking and the choice of words and how you interpret them and the acting.

People complain about dubbing, calling it cheap or untrue to the original, but I tend to disagree. Why this may have been true 20 years ago, the English voice acting has drastically improved to the point where I actually prefer it to the Japanese version. I understand there is still a lot lost in translation, but if I wanted to read I'd get the manga, not the subtitled anime.
For me, I'm a large fan of the Japanese culture. I love their language. I like to hear it, and speak what I know of it.
I also don't like the dubbed because of the voice actors emotions. It seems like they usually can't properly capture the characters feelings. I also get sick of hearing the same voice actors for every show.

It isn't just anime for me. I play games and watch movies in their original language if the option is there. I just really really like other languages. Especially Japanese.
