Why is it always subs over dubs?

Its personal choice.
I liked foreign films, personally, so subbed anime makes sense for me.
I enjoy listening to emotions in a language I don't understand, the whole "foreign" aspect of it (as snobby as that sounds), and I like reading subs so much I usually turn them on even in English.\
But maybe that's because english is my second (though best) language, and I was used to watching english movies subbed in my childhood (though Aladdin is awesome dubbed in Hebrew!).

For me, it's never really been about the voice acting, which granted, I do think are horrible. But I'm willing to tolerate them if they're the only thing around. The main issue with dubs for me is that a lot of the content is misinterpreted. A lot of the time, if there's a joke to be told or a pun to be painfully spouted, it loses a lot of it's value with the English translation. This is also true with just regular speech, and I feel a lot of the drama is lost when it's asked to be interpreted and then regurgitated by a secondary group of people.

I'm not much of a Disney fan, but I can honestly say that I'm jealous.

I'm with you. How much of the story is really lost these days during translation? I prefer dubbed, not because I'm lazy, but I don't want to be reading and miss out on what I should be seeing.

Most good dubs are from Viz media, but others are starting to get it right.

What makes a good dub?
1. Good voice acting. The best can go from comedy to serious quickly.
2. Good Translation. I do not mean word for word, some Subbed anime I have seen on-line translates proper names and you are stuck trying to figure out what they are talking about.
3. Americanize, Americanize, Americanize. Do not hate me for saying this but I like "Bleach" a lot better with the Dubs that make more sense to Western audiences. If it is written for a Japanese audience they will like it more than the American audience, it is not major changes just small ones here and there.

I understand why they do not translate the opening title sequence (It is hard to keep the tune strait) but I do wonder what they are singing about at times.

Hmm... Could it be because we don't want the dialogue to be changed from real to some americanized crap? Or could it be because japanese voice actors are usually able to make the voices sound more believable? Perhaps it's because things generally just sound more awesome in japanese?

Don't they have to translate the spoken Japanese into written English anyway? Unless you speak Japanese, you won't be catching those jokes anyway.

Well theres the fact some dubs change the content, this can be bad, such as the german dub of dragon ball gt which when I saw how they changed the omega shenron fight I nearly fell laughing, but If the dub keeps the plot, characters, and the major feel the same, I have no issue, which is why I'm currently watching Tenchi Muyo dubbed, since the material is the same.

There are a few good dubs around, but overall I prefer subs. English voice actors in most Japanese animations tend to be rather emotionless. Plus the fact that the English dubs will often take out certain parts. Also, it is just plain fun watching the original version.

OT: My ex-grilfriend watched subtitled anime a lot, and kept telling me to watch them with her. To which I replied "I have a brain, therefore I don't watch anime."

I personally despise the voices that the dubs have. Most of the time the English actors sound like small children squeaking into microphones. That and the English versions often get censored because Japan has different laws and standards than we do.

Cause with dubs comes the inevitable editing of most of the more "unsavory" parts of the anime. Also the voice actors also sound very bad and I can't tell that in the subbed version. But not to be an ass or anything, I usually prefer the manga to the anime 9 times out of 10.

The only Anime that has marginally tolerable English voice acting is Cowboy Bebop. That's why I prefer all subs.

I find wanting only subbs a little pretentious but then again, whatever, to each his own.
I prefer understanding the cartoon and getting too deep shows that I"m treating it with higher concern than it deserves.

True, but there's usually some sort of notation that indicates how that particular part of dialogue was supposed to work. It's not as effective as actually understanding the language, I know, and it's barely even a step up from not having known there was supposed to something there in the first place, but it's just sort of a preference I have.

That's kind of the thing about the whole subs/dubs argument. Ultimately, it all comes down to preference. Never in my life have I seen a dub that in any way changes the plotline or story setup in any significant way, so it's completely subjective. Dub fans are just in the minority, that's all.

I don't watch anime anymore, but when I did, I prefered subs because they helped me practice my Japanese. I found it was a really good tool and if I didn't understand something, then I could rewind it and read the subtitle again.
