IIRC, Digimon came out a little before Pokemon in Japan, but Pokemon was released first over in America, and its succes led to Digimon being licenced. So basically anyone who was watching the anime at that time always thought Pokemon came first, and thus with similar names and a 'monsters follow kids around' basic principle, people just believed what seemed to be pretty logical (remember that this is with child/early teen logic and for some people before the days of common internet usage to verify facts immediately.) Thus to people at that time (me included) Pokemon came out on TV first, therefore it was first and Digimon copied it.

Also, I've been reminding my friends of this with insufferable smugness whenever they bring up the topic, so at least my little band of friends are informed.

The Pokemon anime was released 1st in most western countries.

Plus when people see the "mon" they think oh they must have copied

Pokemon came out first and they both have the same last three letters in their titles. Thats why.

I think it's because of the MON at the end of their names... At least that's how it was for me when i was a little kid...

Personally I'm surprised they didn't call the trees "DigiTrees" or the antagonists "Digitagonists." The word Digi was thrown around so much it got a little silly
The term "Digi" was of course originated form digital, seeing as the entire Digimon world was a computer world-thing (as seen in generation 2, when they use their digi-pokedex-things to magically throw them into the world)

OT: Because of the millions of millions of small things that make them similar.
Teens, monsters, both of the pokedex thingys, and both of the animes trying to be accessible to both adults and kids and both failing on the adult part.

Personally, I only care for the Pokémon games (and the first movie, as that was my favorite movie as a kid), and the anime in Digimon.

So, to summarize: In games, Pokémon is way better.
In anime, Digimon is way better.
I gotta debate that... I mean Digimon World 2 was pretty awesome..

Indeed it might have been good (haven't played that one), but Pokémon was still better.

Because Pokémon is awesome
Iunno,World 3 was the same style as Pokemon, just different in ways,Gameplay the same

The storylines are way different. Pokemon has a sort of open storyline where the episodes didn't link much into eachother, while Digimon has a generally more linear story that is told well. No offense to Pokemon (the games are great), but every damn episode is the same thing of: arrive at a new place, meet a new pokemon, defeat team rocket (again).
Digimon had storyline that actually progressed throughout the episodes. It tells a story of a group of kids that end up in an alternative universe and have to stop the evil forces (that actually pose a threat) and all that. (it's really 9 years since I watched this)

Probably the fact that it's about small kids hanging around with creatures that have the -mon ending on the name of species.

The plot and the way the creatures "exist" is vastly different so i wouldn't say Digimon copied much except maybe the concept of small children travelling around in a make-believe world.

Like honestly, YOU never answered the question. If you're so high and mighty and well informed about this deep intellectual topic then stop your trolling and stop your hating. Put your facts/opinion down and respectfully accept everybody else's comments. Nobody here is looking for a flame war, nobody really cares that much. Do you see people arguing? No, just you.

Anywho, from what I remember, obviously there are differences between the two shows/anime/games etc. Saying things like "the plots were different" or "they didn't capture them, they only had one" like thats just nitpicking; when you copy a franchise like that your going to redo it so that yours can supersede the original. Its just like the vampire thing right now. Twilight had four books out before they made the movies, so it wasn't as popular. But once the movies came out, tons of vampire related movies/shows/books jumped on the bandwagon because that main theme seemed to sell well; sexy modern vampires. Its like the show True Blood; nobody can look at that and say, "There's an original idea, I'm sure that would have come out without Twilight being popular." Same deal there. There are obvious similarities to the point that it's not coincidence. It's the same theme and it's been stated before. Children. Creature monsters that like to hang around for kicks and giggles. Other creature things that like to fight with a various number of often elemental based attacks. It's no more or less copying than anything else. But it doesn't matter; competition breeds higher quality.

Even if they did... who cares?

There's loads of rip offs. Think of how much Sonic has ripped off Dragonball.

Super Saiyan Sonic anyone?

Sonic 1 had 6 emeralds... then changed to 7 emeralds from Sonic 2 onwards.

Knuckles protecting the master emerald on a floating island = Kami protecting the floating lookout

Silver being from the future... Trunks anyone?

Sorry went off topic there.

My point remains, companies rip off other's ideas all the time. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy the rip off.

Honestly Digimon isn't a copy and in my opinion the Digimon show actually stayed good for a longer time then Pokemon did. Sure both of them suck now but at one time both shows were good.

Well yeah, I get that that was the point. It just felt a little silly to me as a kid. Just like everything having an "e" in front of it if was Electronic or an "i" in front of it if it was made by Apple.

That was my thoughts as a kid. While I didn't watch Digimon as much it was much better done then the Pokemon Anime.
