I'd be pretty happy if it was only composed of first party titles, give me my HD Zelda, HD Mario and HD Metroid and I'll be pretty happy.

Oh, and an HD Okami please.

Yeah Wii was casual and crap... but it was cheap and had an intuitive controller.

WiiU ain't going to be as cheap, not by half. Wii didn't do well because of its brand, You all act like it was inexplicable magic that Wii sold well and that the same magic must apply to the WiiU as 75% of the letters are the same though everything else is different:
-It's competing directly with Sony and Microsoft in target market and processing power
-It isn't going to be able to undercut them in price
-their table controller is not instantly intuitive in use like the Wii-mote was. It's a dual analogue tablet monstrosity, your grandma who got a Wii is NOT going to get a WiiU!

How is this "definitely not going to flop"?!? The only argument seem to be:

"Come on! It's a Wii! But better. I can't be bothered to stop and think how the Wii sold so if it's more powerful (but more expensive and less intuitive) then it must do better"

Wii sold because it was NOT hardcore. It was a jazzed up old 6th gen console with a new novel controller. Pile em high and sell em cheap. Big Mac burgers aren't the best burger in the world because they sell the most, at the lowest price, promising the least.
The WiiU will be more intuitive. They said the touch screen was 1:1 with on screen action at all times.

Also the Wii sold because it was cheap and catered to casuals with Wii Fit and the motion controller. It wasn't just the new controller. Also there was no reason not to buy if you liked Nintendo games, unless you were a graphics whore that couldn't tolerate 480p.

Nobody knows the WiiU's price yet so there's no way we can tell if it will flop or not. It all depends on the price. If it's $300 then it will sell like crazy. If it's $350 some people might be hesitant. If it's $400 then people might hold off until PS4 or the nextbox are announced. If it's $450 it will flop.

Honestly, I don't know.

It's both dispiriting and kind of stupid how a few big names have decided right out of the gate to say, "Oh, no, our software won't run on the Wii-U"; if the reports that the hardware are significantly more powerful than the 360 are true, it seems like kind of a "cut off nose to spite face" decision geared more towards playing to a hardcore demographic still angry at the Wii than any kind of thoughtful strategic decision.

I don't think the new controller will do them any favors unless Nintendo can lead the way in showing how it can be an innovative and integral part of a gaming experience rather than a hindrance and an inconvenience, a hurdle to jump that has to be addressed before the player can get back to more traditional game play they're used to.

That said, a hardware profile that's more along the lines of the current generation has got to have a certain appeal for developers who are watching their costs spiral out of control. The one absolute certainty of the next generation, as envisioned by Sony and Microsoft, is that its increased power will cost even more to develop content for, especially if its going to justify in gamers' minds the costs of their new hardware. Meanwhile the Angry Birdss and Braids and Meat Boys and Bastions are all singing the sweet siren song that, hey, maybe you don't have to fill a Blu-Ray disk with HD chrome to create a compelling gameplay experience.

Big N needs to walk an unfamiliar tightrope: they need to show other developers how to entice their audience with their hardware, but at the same time they need to not create a marketplace where there's only room for high-profile first-party Nintendo titles and shovelware, with nothing in between.

If they can do that, it's not impossible that Wii-U will have a more solid and genuine leadership in this hardware generation than they did in the last.

If they can't, M$ and Sony are going to grab everyone's attention with expensive 3D chrome, and the Wii-U is going to be this decade's Dreamcast.

Dunno if anyone has referenced this article yet, but if you haven't then I'm severely disappointed in you, Escapists. [http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-ways-we-know-nintendo-has-lost-its-mind/] It sums up nearly everything wrong with the WiiU, with actual humor to boot!

Ts ts ts. So full of misconceptions.

Not all that funny either. Well, let me debunk most of those, shall we?

1. They already announced that all those comments are going to be screened before they appear in public, so no penis I'm afraid. The Escapist reported:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.377975-Wii-U-Miiverse-Will-Use-Human-Screening?page=1

2. He kinda admits it's a matter of personal preference. Moving on.

3. We have indications that the versions on the Wii U are going to look better, and it will be the game of the year edition for Arkham City. It's not a bad deal for people who never played it, and those people exist, especially if their only other console has been the Wii.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-vs-wiiu-e3-2012 (scroll down to see graphics comparison)

http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/05/batman-arkham-city-armored-edition-headed-to-wii-u/

4. Zombi U is actually the most exciting thing I have seen for a while. This is survival horror the way it should be. Will it be comfortable? No. It shouldn't be comfortable when you are in a zombie apocalypse. This is something that has never been tried before, and noone knows yet how well it works, but obviously it's crap, since it's not what we are used to. What a joke. I don't remember that kind of backlash against Heavy Rain, when the game asked you to do fucking ballet on the controller to survive certain sections. That wasn't very comfortable, either.

5. This one I can't really defend. Some of that stuff does look stupid, and not what asymmetrically gameplay should be about. However, what the Escapist described when testing the Multiplayer of Zombi U gives me more hope. I admit, it's an idea probably lifted from ("inspired by") the Zombie Master mod, but then again, this is nothing we have seen so far on home consoles.

But the very mention of a PowerPC CPU means everyone thinks the WiiU has the Xbox's CPU?
And?

I never said it was significant, I'm saying that is what people have estimated it as high as. Also, it does have basis.
Bringing it up and defending it is adding significance to it.

Actually, did you do any looking into the source?

The PERSON who sold the things. As in ONE manager of a Gamestop.

This is kind of the problem, right here.

Reading some of the criticisms in this thread I have no idea what people want from Nintendo. It seems like they'd rather have them stop producing consoles entirely than try something new and interesting. Either that or just make the NintendoBox3, and try and be like Sony and Microsoft.

I'm not saying that the WiiU is a guaranteed day one purchase for me, but I think it has a lot of potential. The amount of stick Nintendo get for trying to innovate - seriously, say gimmick one more time, I dare you, I double dare you mother-fucker - simply beggars belief.
I agree with this too. The word "Gimmick" is holding back the whole industry. Nintendo tries to do something new, and change the way we play games and everyone shouts "GIMMICKY SHIT I GO BACK TO XBOX NOW!". Then they don't buy it, and because of that other companies see making innovative stuff like the Wii U as too risky and will just make the Xbox or the PS3 with better graphical power. Then people complain there's not enough innovation in the industry...

Seriously gamers, get your shit together and stop calling ANY new innovation a "Gimmick", it just makes you look like whiney douches who don't want change.
I hate to break it to you, but the Wii U is by all rights a gimmick, and this is from a purely technical standpoint.

I mean look at it:

First of all, the controller is the size of a decently long novel. It's big, it's clunky, it's buttons are all over the place, and it's not going to be comfortable to hold even with the grips. This is inexcusable by modern standards of controllers because it's going to continuously get in the of comfortable play.

Then there is the touchscreen, which simply clashes with the functionality of the controller. You see, most modern tablets use the touchscreen exclusively for interaction, which means that users will perpetually have a hand hovering over the screen for seamless and easy control. Controller's do the same thing by having all of its functions in small groups that are easily accessible by certain specific fingers. However, the Wii U has both a touchscreen and the controller. Your hands will have to constantly swap between the two, so some level of the device's capability will be inaccessible depending on what is currently occurring.

More damningly about the controller though is the fact that one has to concentrate between two different screens spaced widely apart.

Now I want you to do a little experiment with me. First focus on something in the room you're in, approximately 5 or more feet away. Now, turn back to face your screen and look at these words. You'll find that it takes roughly a second give or take to fully focus on your computer screen. Now imagine having to do that regularly for half an hour or more. That's going to cause two major problems.

First is that you're going to get major eyestrain because you're using muscles that weren't designed for constant repetition, potentially causing various levels eye damage depending on the level of use. This rapid eye movement will also cause headaches as those muscles require far more blood flow that usual and will increase pressure in the cranium which can lead to some of the most infernal migraines.

Then there is the simple fact that the simple act of swapping your view between screens is going to screw over your reaction time on whatever you're doing, which most hardcore games need in order to play well. And seeing as Shigeru Miyamoto specifically stated that the Wii U is meant to recapture the hardcore fanbase this design feature is in direct conflict with it's intended goals.

And of course there are the system capabilities. Now while the Wii U may have technically better visual capabilities than the current generation, it will still be comparable to them. Now I have a Jasper-powered X-box 360 which is one of the newest versions of the system, and despite that modernity it still chugs when certain games like Skyrim or Rage are played. That means the Wii will suffer from those same deficiencies which the next-gen Xbox and Playstation will most likely reduce if not remove. That means that within roughly 2 years of it's release it is most likely going to be out of date as a product.

So to reiterate, the Wii U is by all accounts a gimmick. It adds nothing new to consoles or gaming in general. If I wanted a touchscreen for playing games then I can just use my iPhone, which would not only be more convenient and better implemented but can be played practically anywhere and has way more features and uses for the same or lower price as the Wii U.

Yep, it sure does seem like Yahtzee's opinion is the one the Escapist has overall. He says "Nintendo's not innovative!" and even after the fact that he's wrong the Escapist just follows him and thinks they're not innovative. Just an example I thought up.
Ok it seems that people need a reminder for what the word "innovate" means, so lets go look at the textbook definition of it shall we?

From the Now Oxford American Dictionary:
innovate
verb [ intrans. ]
make changes in something established, esp. by introducing new methods, ideas, or products
eg. the company's failure to diversify and innovate competitively.

Now the Wii's supposed innovation was motion controls. However, motion controls have existed since the invention of the light gun, which occurred back in the 1930s after the development of light-sensing vacuum tubes, though it wasn't until the 1980's the the light gun was used in games, which is still decades before the Wii used it. Heck, there are arcades both past and present that have machines that have sword swinging and gun shooting just like the Wii does and they existed years before I was even born.

So by the actual definition of "innovate" the Wii did nothing of the sort. It did not create a new product or introduce a new idea into the fold. All it was is the branding of an already existent product as "new". So please, don't use any permutations of the word innovate for the Wii, because it really doesn't exist. The term is being abused as a catchword to lure in potential customers.

I think I get a bigger laugh out of these responses than you guys do fake laughing at my post. Fox and the grapes much? Please, the only people who don't appreciate the Wii's library are people who either are obsessed with brown and bloom or people who just don't have one, so they still subconsciously fight the console war like a former member of the Confederacy.

and THIS is where everything you say falls apart

its one thing to like the Wii and defend it...(if I were to say anythign nice about it it had *some* good games...though pretty slim pickings if your not into Nintendo titles, I had a Wii.....and when I got a PS2 and a computer that played decent games its been under my bed ever since)

but regardless of that the problem here is your using a silly strawman argument and painting a rediculous image of whoever hates on the Wii

*I* could say that anyone who actually defends the Wii is a silly fanboy who's obessed with Mario, but I know thats not entirly true,

Hi there... You DOOOO know the very definition you posted for innovation lacks anything towards "quality of the idea," correct? So, by your definition. Nintendo is VERY innovative

Pikmin created a genre, all their franchise releases try something different if their isn't a number in the title (introducing something different to something already exist....), and now let's go into the Wii-U controller.

It's very innovative, by your own definition. Don't remember? Let's requote it:

"From the Now Oxford American Dictionary:
innovate
verb [ intrans. ]
make changes in something established, esp. by introducing new methods, ideas, or products."

Okay so, let's break this down...

>... in something established

Okay, gaming. There's something established. As well as basic controllers and convention of play.

>make changes...

Hm, I see no tablet controllers anywhere else that interact as a separate screen entirely as well as a portable controller.... I also don't see a console that allows old controllers to work on new games. Hm.

>...by introducing new methods, ideas, or products."

Well, it's certainly a new product that's launching a whole line of new products. It's a completely new idea, especially on the social side of things, and it's a new method entirely.

By the very definition you went out of your way to quote, you literally proved Nintendo is probably is most innovative company alive. Good job.

I have all three consoles. I'm pretty safe in the fanboy department.

I personally think Wii has the most fun exclusives. I think Sony has the most exclusives. And I think MS is great for social networking and downloading. Simple as really.

which is fine

my point is I don't hate on the Wii because I'm some COD obsessed dumbass

I hate on it because it does absolutly nothing for me in terms of what I want out of a platform and my gaming tastes
