Will WoW ever die?

There are a few things that can lead to a downward turn in WoW's numbers:

1). The recession: With the global economy in a downward spiral, people are going to have less disposable income. With less disposable income, families are going to start cutting unnecessary or frivilous expenses...and nothing says "unnecessary or frivilous" like World of Warcraft. A lot of the younger players, those who do not pay for subscriptions with their own funds, will be dropping like flies.

2). Time: As time goes on, fads fade away. While it might not seem like one, WoW is a fad. As it's user base grows older, some will realize what a waste of their time it is. They'll find better things to do with their ample time.

3). Repetition: As often as fans tell me that there is so much variety to WoW, it's not true. The game is basically the same crap over and over again. Once you hit the level cap, there's really not that much more in the way of excitement left. Players will start to get bored, and will start to leave.

All this having been said, I think it will take a long time before WoW "dies".

I think WoW will last for a while longer. It's bound to die sooner or later though. I like the idea of a Pokemon MMO. They did it with FF so why not Pokemon?

I hope it never dies. It prevents good games from being full of people who whine about how the game isn't as good as WoW. WHY DON'T YOU JUST STAY THERE THEN!

If The Realm (http://www.realmserver.com/ ) can hang on, so can WOW. It's just a matter of whether or not Blizzard decides to kill WOW in order to bring
I believe that since Blizzard shot itself in the foot (potentially) with SC2 and D3 and all the crap around that, that they might change the audience they are catering to yet again. I heard somewhere they are working on another MMO, and if they mess it up, they might panic and try to compensate by doing something to WoW. That's one of the possible outcomes if WoW were to be dieing.
It's my understanding that they're finally doing a new IP. It will be a sci-fi themed MMO. It will (apparently) not compete with WoW.

I agree with this, all MMO's die out at some point as it's been said, the thing is once you have your favourite set of armour, defeated the hardest boss and attained a respectable PvP rank ( this is based of those players that like to do a bit of everything) you will start to get bored at the enormous amount of obvious repetition and stop playing. For me at least this happens with all MMO's that's why I play GW when I get bored I leave, a month or so later I come back and play then leave again it doesn't require a lot of time put into it.

No, it won't die. At least, not for a loooong time. People still play(ed) the original everquest well after it's original release. People still play(ed) Ultima online well after it's original release. MMOs I have heared are designed around a 10 year life-cycle, I doubt we'll see WoW actually die untill around 2015ish. It might however lose it's spot as the biggest MMO, but that's hard to guage before it actually happens.

Wow will never die, if anything WoW will regress and people will go back to play just regular WoW if new content pisses them off that much.
The Warcraft regime will live on if just to get bashed by people who can't let go.

It is a possibly the upcoming Fallout MMO will cut into WoW's numbers, but it is rather unlikely. WoW has become too powerful, too quickly... There may be no hope...
the Fallout MMO is nothing more than a FPS get over it it is not a good idea.
Do you have any evidence to show that it is in fact an FPS?
1. Fallout is an FPS with adventure thrown into it
2. just throw online capabillities on there and you have a FPS with an unusually large map
do you have any ideas to were it will not be a FPS? or will it rip off every other MMO out there and fail at it, like it would

Why is an FPS MMO a bad idea?
First off there can not be a MMOFPS it just will not work. you are asking to bring in two good styles of gameplay which are good by themselves to come together and expect it to be good. No you will be asking for the creater of this game to put there dick pudding and there for ruining the pudding. In short they just can't come together and be succesfull. it will be another Fallout game with Co-op abillities. that is as far as you will go with it

So long as fans keep playing it, it will continue. How do you think Nintendo keep remaking the old "classic" games for every console they bring out.

Last count was something like 11 million players? It was an escapist news topic a couple weeks ago

I dont think it will ever die, and I cant see any other MMO's rivaling it, unfortunately

Guild wars has like 5 million or something dont they?!
True, but you must consider how many of those are abandoned accounts. Additionally, if you have all campaigns, that will count as 4 for them. Whereas 11 million accounts in WoW really means 11 million accounts, paying a monthly fee.
I still love GW and still believe it's the only MMO that matters (yes, I'm calling it an MMO, though CORPG is more accurate). Having played GW FIRST, I hated WoW. No quest markers, you have to download an add-on to know what class an enemy is, it is seldom patched, there's nothing to tell you where you should go, bad graphics, repetitive scenery (worse than Guild Wars: Factions, in fact), and it's also full of gits.

Uh, have you ever played Fallout 1? Or 2? They are the exact antithesis of an FPS (turn-based RPG), and the upcoming MMO is being made by the guy behind those two games. The day it becomes an FPS is when the developers are bought out by Bethesda.

To ensure that you do not misinterpret my message, I will link a Fallout 1 video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-1MO1SdHLg
See anything resembling an FPS here?

Why should WoW 'die'? More than ten million people enjoy the game. I'd assume they enjoy it because they think it's good. Is there something with that many people playing something they enjoy?

Excuse me what? Fallout is NOT an FPS, not at all... Do you even know what you are talking about? O,o You are especially wrong considering that Project V13 (AKA Fallout Online) will de developed by the developers of the original Fallout, which decreases the chances of V13 to be a Bethesda-hellspawn...

Am I the only person who still considers Guild Wars a MMO, I mean does anyone even know it exist?
Yes, but I don't play it anymore.

*sighs* You can't tell the future unless you have a crystal ball. I think that WoW will eventually run it's course, just like Everquest, and that some newcomer will throw it's hat into the ring and replace it.
