This disturbs me quite a bit, I've read historical witchcraft trials that pan out the exact way. And banning all Non-Christian symbols? Isn't this some kind of violation of the constitution?
Americans, please tell me this kind of thing only happens in places like Oklahoma.
Ahhh. PZ Myers, religion hating atheist extraordinaire. Salt, pinch, take, etc.
Umm...that'd be great and all, however, the article wasn't on the school banning religious symbols, just those that aren't related to Christianity...
But, if you feel that way, here's the same story from different site:
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BUE/is_7_133/ai_n18610820

And while I can't condone those who deny belief in whatever form, at the same time, the christian side in this story seem to have acted frankly, like idiots.

Helnurath, um... no? Maybe the really occult people, but she was accused of a witch for practicing wicca, basically one of the more harmless religions out there. It's only skewed as witch craft in most modern cases. Wicca's (is that correct use?) are at fairs and crap, I think they do herbal medicine and witch-doctor like readings/cures, not bubbling cauldrons and summoning demons.

/lesigh Sounds like she is just another wannabe trying to stand out. Real witches, warlocks, satanists learn early on to keep this kinda stuff secret and just manipulate people like marrionette puppets.
Not understanding the point to much unless it's a attempt at humor maybe? But as to why it's a bit of her fault is simple I thought.

The lesson is this, When in Rome do as the Romans do.However most Romans forget that when in Gaul do as the Gaul's do. When your core faith differs from your surrounding environment and you know it does best to keep your head down till your out of dodge.

Same way if your a hardcore fundamentalist Christan in Iran you don't act disgusted by the ignorant close minded views on Christianity. Same way when your a Muslim in a small town that is fundamentalist christian you try to avoid the close minded views on Islam. It's just basic survival sense.

Same way I feel the rich white college kids who go to Mexico and flash their money also have it coming to them if they get mugged,or the cops blackmail them for money.

In the criminal justice world,We call this victim participation violence, Meaning that if a guy at a bar punches the man sitting next to him,Then the guy he punches shoots him.Well if he never punched the biker gang member he wouldn't have gotten shot so he brought it upon himself to get in the position to get shot in the first place.

No denying it. Being a Pagan myself I find Christianity suppressing any form of Paganism to be pretty sickening. But I am just saying - this isn't an article placed there with the noblest of intentions. This is another attempt to PZ Myers to brand a creed and culture that opposes his as being part of some crank conspiracy.

Look. Me, NOT Christian. I have no belief in any form of monotheistic god and (as far as omnipotence goes) no belief in any god at all. I am the very antithesis of what constitutes organised Christianity. I believe in evolution, I think that threatening hell for those without "club memberships" is an evil thing to do, I think gays are just people who are different, not sinners or anything, I think that political decisions on morality and such things should be made without any religious interference at all.

But I wouldn't pull this shit [http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/07/the_great_desecration.php].

PZ Myers is a colossal douchebag. All the Jerry Falwells and the John Hagees out there? Well they have their atheistic counterparts in people like this. Yes, even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day, but that doesn't mean we should pay heed to it. I really wish more people would just see these kinds of people for what they are.

Even if, I really doubt that we can go around accusing people of witchcraft, even people who are part of these cults or religions, and punishing people for it in today's times. Bloody Puritans...
I really would not worry about that. These are just remote pockets of morons that live in the hills. (and no, not all people that live in rural areas are morons.)

Nowhere is it stated that (NINE YEARS AGO) the girl in question actually attempted to cast a spell on anyone, rather it seems she was the victim of a smear campaign in the wake of post-Columbine hysteria, so I really don't think you can apply the label "victim participation". It seems more like "victim wait what the hell just happened".

Just for the record:

Not Like Everyone Else is a 2006 TV movie that aired on Lifetime Television and starred Alia Shawkat. It is based on a true story of events that happened to Brandi Blackbear in 1999-2000.

Plot:
Shortly after the Columbine High School massacre, Union Intermediate High School (in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma) was one of many schools around the country increasing security measures to prevent school shootings. Brandi Blackbear wrote horror stories similar to those of Stephen King, dressed in a slightly Goth-like way, and was not afraid to be herself, or to stand up to bullying by popular kids. Her defiance engendered hostility toward her from certain segments of her school's culture. False stories of threats of violence were circulated, and the combination of her writing and authorities' natural hyperawareness following Columbine led to her being suspended. When some of her fellow students later saw her checking out a book on world religions, including Wicca (as research for her stories), they immediately branded her a witch, and eventually accused her of casting a spell that made a teacher sick. Fear of her spread through much of the school, and she was once again suspended.

Finally, her parents went to the ACLU, where they were told they had a good case against the school for violating her civil rights. The ACLU sued the affluent school for $10 million, even though the Blackbears were not sure they deserved that much based on what Brandi had suffered. Still, the ACLU argued that the school would not take any lesser claim seriously. When the school offered a settlement, the Blackbears refused. They were not interested in the money, despite needing it; what they really wanted was to have their story heard in court to inform the public that the school had mistreated Brandi. The judge ruled to dismiss the charges rather than going to trial, and ordered the Blackbears to pay $6000 in court fees, which they could not afford. Eventually it was agreed to drop the fees if the Blackbears dropped their appeal.

It's not that she tried to cast a spell, That would paint her this way. It's that she actively showed off her faith in a hostile area. Look it's the same thing as what Rich guys do all the time in poor areas. They come down in BMW's and fancy watches then are shocked when people try to mug them.

The fact is this if your in a middle of nowhere hick land where people are hardcore Christan. Maybe put away the pentagram and "Christianity is fiction" bumper stick till your out of town.

Not saying it was right she was treated this way,Just someone should have told her to wait till shes 18 move out of this environment then practice her faith openly in a area people wont try and hurt her in.

I don't even think Kansas is this stupid. And they don't believe in evolution.

(To anyone living in Kansas, sorry. And when'd you get the internet?)

EXCUSE ME
It is not ok. Don't believe in evolution? wtf.

When the random kansas local schoolboard voted to teach creationism instead of evolution, the local community voted ALL OF THEM OUT OF OFFICE in the VERY NEXT ELECTION and overturned the ruling.

This has happened in EVERY community where this has been tried.

Ironic that you probably think everyone from kansas are bigoted and stupid (but not THIS stupid, apparently).

Man, I wish I could turn into a goat at will. I can sneak unsuspectingly into the Ladies gym locker without suspicion.
