Wolfenstein Recalled in Germany - UPDATED

Wolfenstein [http://www.activision.com] in Germany and while nobody seems to be quite sure why, I think we can all make a pretty good guess.

It's been more than six decades but Germany is apparently still a bit touchy about all that war business back in the 30s and 40s. It turns out that touching off a world-wide conflagration that consumed 60 million souls is the sort of thing that weighs a little heavy on the national psyche and thus, images of swastikas and other Nazi-related symbols are strictly verboten in German videogames.

This should not come as a big surprise to anyone; German authorities banned the original Raven's [http://www.idsoftware.com/games/wolfenstein/wolf3d/] recent namesake shooter in the country, yet speculation is that some sort of Nazi connection managed to slip through the cracks and into the German edition of the game.

right here [http://www.pcgames.de/m,home/Startseite/]) and has asked all dealers to pull the game from their shelves. It seems likely, according to the report, that some small piece of constitutionally-forbidden Nazi imagery was left in the game and that Activision is making a preemptive strike to handle the problem. The publisher is expected to release a statement regarding the recall in the next few days and we will of course update when we have more.

UPDATE: As expected, it looks like the uproar has to do with an errant swastika that slipped past Activision. It's not hard to see why; it's clear enough when you've got a bright red arrow pointing at it but hardly the sort of thing that leaps out at you unbidden. Given the extent to which the game was de-Nazified for German release (via schnittberichte.com [http://www.schnittberichte.com/schnittbericht.php?ID=5982811]), I think we can safely say this was just an honest and understandable mistake.

Thanks to aBlackKnight [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/aBlackKnight] for the tip.

Its well known that hen it comes to localization the Germans are pretty hardcore, although any Germanic folks I know that want Resident Evil 4 with the super gun or whatever you travel across the border to buy it.

That's right Germany, you go to your room and think long and hard about what did.

I think most of the world has put that page in history behind them. I think its time Germany did too.

God, can't we just get over it? It's been over 60 years, that's a whole generation of people (and the second one coming) that didn't have anything to do with god damn Nazis.

i thought they were allowed to use the swastika in art and such. guess video games don't qualify
I remember reading about this and I think video games in Germany are classed a "kid toys" and you can only have swastikas in art and movies. Let me see if I can find the link.

Edit - Here it is, I don't know if it's true.

I'm pretty sure this just means they're going to take the game off of store shelves and such. I doubt they could just take it away from the people who already own it.

We have, too... it's just that the people who run our country can't afford to admit it (or even seem to admit it) for worries about international reprimands.

The German version of Wolfenstien had everyone in the game turned into robots and was renamed Probostien.

If it was a big taboo subject, then Call of Doody would have never been made.

Generally what I meant by the comment. I don't see why any one with common sense would reprimand them now when it's been 60+ years and so on and so forth.
