This is actually probably why we don't have any games based in Vietnam or the Falklands.
What?

I really think that the whole "OMG THERE BE A SWATSIKA IN GAME BAN NOW!" thing should stop. The faster we all allow this sort of thing, the easier it will be to move on.

It's time to move on, forget about it. It happened a long time ago, yes I know it costs millions of lives but so have alot of other incidents that go unmentioned.

The more you keep being stuck up about the whole Nazi image, Germany, the longer people will remember it for.

Doesn't banning Swastikas just make them stand out all the more in the national consciousness? Seriously, I think Germany's beaten itself up enough over the Second World War.

kind-o-off-topic:
this actually reminds me of skate videos. in many skate videos there´s a skatespot with a big swastika painted on wall. i always wonder whenever i see it in those why none of the people skating there overpaint it? quickly it was called the swastika-spot amongst us. when you see footage from this place, it´s sometimes surreal if you see a nice trick going down and then you have also the unavoidable swastika almost visible in full effect as long as the skater is not right in front of it. i think the spot is in spain or something...

I STILL cannot see why shooting Nazies and Fascists could be any wrong!

unfortunately Germany has increasing problems with Neo Nazies.
The target of attacks from Neo Nazies no longer are restrictred to Immigrants but extents to German citizen who try to stand up against them, and Neo Nazie-related Organizations now "officially" targeting the democratic state of Germany itself.

so this is not a fun topic.

And to the note: there is a difference between a Swastika and a Hakenkreuz.
Swastika is the symbol of sacred in Asia and India.

I find it quite interesting that everyone is booing Germany over the fact that they don't want to see the Hakenkreuz Flag in computer games (which are not art, in my opinion). Actually, a lot of games like Company of Heroes just don't use it because of that _in all versions_. (which doesn't hurt the game at all) There are a lot of icons that are allowed (almost all Troop insignia).

The strange thing about Wolfenstein is how mad Activision was about it: they even cut the Word "Nazi" and turned it into "Wolf". They also replaced/cut some of the allowed troop insignia. They truly overshot their target. This makes the german version a total joke (to everyone) and this mishap makes it even funnier.

An while we're at it... other Countries ban other things:
* Australia is touchy when it comes to any kind of substances that change stats (for example Drugs in Fallout 3, Herbs in Risen), because of drug references
* In the US, the tame sexual scenes in Mass Effect created an outrage
* Don't get me started about Hot Coffee (how high was the settlement?)
* Japan cuts the "Boom"-Ending out of the "Power of the Atom" Quest, shouldn't they get over it as well?
* In a similar case, Clive Barkers Undying was stopped in some countries, because some minor background art contained arab phrases that insulted Allah (which, by the way, I find reasonable)

So, let's all have a lough about each other. You lough about us being Nazis or not-quite-over-the-nazis, we lough about you being prude, not-quite-over-the-bomb or touchy when it comes to religion. Or, better yet: we just accept that and move on.

Activision decided to produce a shooter that was ripe with content that they knew is forbidden in Germany. They also decided to invest a lot of manpower to get it on the (large) german market and fumbled. Bad luck, but they knew the risk. End of the story.

In Valkyrie, the operation was a failure and everyone died.
I don't think it's necessary to worry about spoiling this one. The secret is out. :)

Thanks for reconfirming my point. That was my argument in the first place.

Perhaps this will prompt developers to move the fuck on from World War 2, like Germany and Japan have had to. Why monopolise one or two groups of people to shoot, anyway?
