First season of Full Metal Panic! Some serious checkbox fanservice moments detracted quite a bit from an otherwise good season.

I cannot believe no one has brought up Strike Witches yet. It is an anime in which prepubescent witches, their powers start fading when they hit puberty, fight aliens, who appear as shape shifting space ships, who can only be harmed by magic. To reach the aliens in the sky they use what are basically miniature airplane fuselages on their feet. This footwear apparently makes them unable to wear pants, at any time. Also when they activate their magic they gain animal tails and ears.

The first season was not to bad but the second season got so bad with the fan service that i stopped watching.

Casual Shinji already took mine with Asuka's plugsuit; that thing was just made for merchandising lol.

Uhm... Pfff, I don't know, maybe just 75% of EVERYTHING coming from Japan?
Be it game, manga or anime - Japan will find a way.
Please, tell me more about this 'Japan' place. Sounds like you know a thing or two!

Dont have any examples saved to post but fanservice is pretty much why I don't bother with anime. Granted i've only seen a dozen or so shows and a similar amount of stand alone movies but I hate having to explain i'm really not watching porn. The upskirts, F cup boobs short short shorts or skirts, camera angles to highlight those.

Although not visual fan service;

The relationship between the Kirito and Asuna in Sword Art Online felt like a sort of mental fanservice. The anime was always a self insert nerd-loner power fantasy and then suddenly they have the main character playing house, even adopting a child. That part really put me off on the anime. Also, in season two, the ridiculous 'love-triangle' thing between Kirito, Asuna and his sister, playing right into the Japanese imouto fetish. His little sister was also exploited graphically for fan service, so I guess that this bit ties in with the thread at hand?

Continuing on this kind of fan service; pretty much all of Log Horizon.

Hardie har har.

New Zealand guy with the Japanese name is going to act condescending because someone from Western Europe has got an opinion.

I just call them as I see them - and when it comes to exported products like video games and anime, I don't think what I just said is that far off. Every game made by Compile Heart, Idea Factory, Team Ninja (and other Tecmo Koei subsidiaries), Gust, Platinum Games, Tri-Ace, Square-Enix (more restrained, but still - same goes for Tri-Ace), etc. The only major exception I can think of is Nintendo and their 'family friendly' mindset. See also: just about every shounen (shonen?) anime ever.

Not saying they can't make good games (well, okay, Compile Heart and Idea Factory can't), but that's not what this thread is about - it's about blatant fanservice. Personal experience tells me that exported media from Japan has everyone else beat on that field, so that's what I'm writing down.

And yeah, I know, different cultures, but that's not the point, it's about the cheesecake factor. (Though, now that I think about it, North American comics should also get a mention!)

The beach filler episode of Bleach; they couldn't have made it any more fan-servicey if they'd tried. All of a sudden the vast majority of the female cast is at the beach, in bikinis, and I swear they slow-pan the camera from foot to head up every single one of them. It's so shameless it's almost funny.
I'm sorry, but the minute you say "beach", letalone "filler", you know it's going to be there solely for the sake of fanservice. There is no "if they tried", because they did - the more anime I watch that go anywhere near the beach, the less hope I hold of anyone ever telling an interesting story on one.

Closest was Elfen Lied, and that's already been mentioned for its vast quantities of nudity (I'll let other people argue about whether it's fanservice or not).

I'm going to go with Ninja Scroll, personally. I mean, yes, it's a sort of 'coming of age' thing for anime geeks, but it's clearly just fan service for fan service's sake. Let's make her naked and have a rock version of Colossus rape her! So our hero can just walk right up and kill the guy, to prove he's a badass!
Me: "What the shit am I watching?"
Sorry are you talking about the series or the movie?
Because in the movie it's not actually Jubei that kills him at all. He just gets in the way for a while.

But that aside, there's a fairly hefty chunk of nudity in there and most of the women seem to only be there for sex (let's not forget the concubine scene).

I normally don't have a problem with fanservice, as long as the series knows what it is and what it's trying to do and stuff. However, the worst example of fanservice that I've ever had the displeasure of experiencing is probably Vividred Operation. The reviews on Crunchyroll were all over the place, with practically the same amount of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 star reviews, so I knew that something was up and I felt curious as to what it was. The fanservice wasn't as extreme as you might think; in terms of subject matter, it's decently tame. It's like they tried to be a little bit subtle with it. However, they completely failed at that, since the whole thing was just ass shot after ass shot after ass shot of a 12, maybe 13-year-old girl in those gym uniform bottoms and bike shorts. Hell, the series opens on an ass shot; a girl is standing, facing the sunrise, and the camera focuses on her posterior such that you can see the sun shining between her legs. And the worst part is, it's all lovingly rendered; all of these ass shots have all of the relevant curves and contours, including between the legs, drawn in impressive detail. I found that it got really intrusive. Doesn't help that the premise and story (sci-fi mahou shoujo) didn't really make up for anything.

Also, no one should be able to put so much mayonnaise on anything. Seeing the main character put a gigantic freaking pile of mayonnaise on her rice made me gag.

I could count a dozen examples, but the one that made me the saddest was Shura Kirigakure. I really liked where that manga was going, I finally thought I'd find a shounen series that (mostly) was pretty cool about its female characters and the like, at least in terms of visual design.

But then Shura Kirigakure came along and I actually shouted "Goddammit!" when I saw her design for the first time. Inexcusable nonsense. She pulls her fucking sword nearly out of her cleavage, for fuck sake. What a shame.

That overated crap Ghost In the Shell has a stupid bimbo robot taking her clothes off to work. I saw that, then said, FTS! and left the video.
Except in Ghost in the Shell (the movie) it's not sexualized at all. There's nudity, yes, but it's not for the sake of titillation. It's actually very sterilzed and cold. Kind of like a mannequin or robot.
I'd argue that for the most part that's a pretty weak excuse. For some scenes, yes, I see it too but for the most part her way of dress is plain ol' titillation. It really put me off as well, I couldn't see any other excuse for it other than making her look hot. Especially in Stand Alone Complex.

And if that wasn't annoying enough, there's the bloody Tachikoma as well. I'll never get Japan's weird way of handling tonality.

Recently a friend urged me to watch some of Kill la Kill. I did, and I liked it so much that I watched it all over two days. It was awesome, but I'd be kinda uncomfortable recommending it to some friends. The Kamui override/synchronize appearances being a point that sticks in mind. I know the reason for the appearance is eventually 'explained', but it still seems awkward to me. Also the teacher's (I forget his name >_<) glowing purple nipples.

Oh, and if anyone's thinking that this is really tame compared to other things they've seen, I guess I should point out that this is the only anime I've watched in about 8 years. :3

Muv-Luv Unlimited/Alternative. It's one of my top three visual novels. It's an amazing mech action/drama that is so intense in parts that I still get choked up at times months after I finished it. This is what the armored suits the mecha pilots wear look like:

And that's the full fledged pilots. The trainees(which the main cast are for the majority of the story)? They wear the same thing, except that the flexible parts of the suit are clear. That's right: the mecha pilots in this VN are literally wearing cling wrap as armor.

I kind of suprise no one mention Queen Blade which it is pretty much like Ikki Tousen mixed with Soul Calibur.
The whole cast are warrior fighting skimpy dresses women whose breasts are range from large, very large, extremely large and small and let not forget the loli in that show too!

Also there's that comic Tarot: Witch of the Blackrose. Yeah I'm not convince that the whole nudity and the oversize breast are suppose to symbolise women empowerment (no really I read somewhat that the comic is suppose to be women empowerment)!

Elfen Lied. Not because the fanservice itself is so bad, though it can be, but because there was actually some real potential for a great story in there.
I hate the premise that there "was" potential for a great story, but fanservice so now the story doesn't count any more.

I'd be afraid to let you anywhere near Kodomo No Jikan, for example (I'd tell you to look it up on TVTropes but it's banned from being discussed on TVTropes because of people with similar positions on the whole "fanservice prevents story from existing" thing).

I've got that in my CrunchyRoll queue, but got held up by being told that I needed to watch Kill La Kill. Fanservice aside, is it any good?

The worst I've ever seen, perhaps because I am not a manga/anime fan, was an issue of some Iron Man book in the last few years. I honestly forget the book; it's been a while. Wolverine and Iron Man are in a lab having a dick-waving contest about something to do with choosing a strategy and are about to get into a brawl over it when Spider-Woman decides she'll stop the fight using her pheromone powers. When she comes to this decision, the camera centers itself behind and below her so that her left ass cheek fills the camera and the boys fighting are far in the background. In the next panel, Spider-Woman, who is wearing street clothes, leans back against the wall with the camera roughly level with her vagina, pointed slightly up her while she trails her fingertips seductively along her belly. Her tee-shirt has molded to each of her individual breasts in defiance of all known laws of physics, and she purrs the absolutely senseless line, "Now now, boys...don't get hot and bothered on my account."

She's a goddamned superhero. She has powers. She could have jumped in and thrown them both apart, or she could have used her words like a big girl and just told them they were acting like assholes, but no, she needed to solve the problem with sexuality and a line the writer clearly though was so awesome it didn't need to have any relevance to the scene at hand.

I wish I could find an image of that page. It's baffling to me.

I've been thinking of making this thread for quite a while. Sometimes fanservice (and I mean the sexualizing kind), whether male or female, just reaches a point where you want to punch someone and go "FOR FUCK'S SAKE!!"
Speak for yourself. It's never too much and I never get tired of it.

Some of the BEST examples of blatant fanservice 2013/2014:
Senran Kagura (all of it)
No Game No Life (super healthy scenes)
High School of the Dead (all of it)
Yu-Sibu (all of it)
Sekai de Ichiban (hahahahaha)
Freezing (pretty much all of it)

Never change, anime!

In the film, at least. In SAC, it was really jarring to see the Major wandering around the office without pants on. And no, I don't buy the excuse that in the future, nobody really cares about modesty standards in cybernetic bodies. She's the only one who really does it, and there is no reason other than to show off her legs. It also doesn't help that her tactical armor looks way better.
In the manga it's even worse. Masamune Shirow sure does like his bronzed, gleaning female bodies.
You know things have gotten bad when a guy noted for his seminal contribution to science fiction anime is better known for his bizarre porn titles.

There's a SERIES?
The big, rock guy at the beginning who throws the dual bladed sword like a boomerang and gets stabbed in the eye didn't die from getting stabbed in the eye? It's been a while since I watched the movie, but I remember that being the end of him.

Chances are you'll like Log Horizon, I am being a bit over-critical. It doesn't have as much graphical fan-service, really. Give it a go :D
