Cute... I hope to see girls wearing these to conventions. If developed further, even those ears could convey many more feelings... like anger (turned backwards,tight on the head), curiosity (alert upright),relaxed/happy(sideways) etc...

That was amazingly creepy.
You know, if Japan used their technological progress for something actually practical, not only would they rule the modern world, but we would have a fully intelligent robot in every home in the world and there would be no one with any disabilities.

It's actually kind of funny when you think Japanese don't tend to show their emotions. The ears would lay flat all day.
Say what you like, all innovation is beneficial when it either;
A: Makes people happy
B: Does not degrade the living standards of others
I see no problem with such an item. I think it's damn cool ... not very ergonomic or aesthetically pleasing the strange way they sit ... but miniaturization will take care of that and anything that adds more quirky to this world of gunmetal grey and bitumen is always a nice thing.
Anyways, as I said ... criticize if you want, but 'the road to excess leads to the palace of wisdom' ... or in this case innovation, innovation, innovation. The sheer will to explore new ideas and learn new possibilities (regardless of application) will still lead to ever greater knowledge.
It matters not frivolity, if only if it creates divergent thought and a continued persuance of inspiration.

Developing this technology to that point requires money. So it's not a waste of resources to do this if it brings in a profit, thereby letting them study and tweak the way it works. Rinse and repeat for a bit and then we'll see prosthesis' that respond to your brain. The gimmick comes first, practical application later. That's just how progress works.GrimSheeper said:
