So converting from Microsoft time into Regular Person Time..

Carry the 2, divide by 4, adjust for space time flux capacitance and knob twiddling and your console will be ready....

April.

Actually it's looking more like 2034. No wait! 26 seconds!

Pretty much this, its a standard state of affairs with modern consoles. The PS4 will no doubt have a bunch of firmware updates and any games will need patches, but hey consoles are more convenient right?

In an alternate universe where it doesn't take 30 mins to be able to play GTA V, I could have downloaded a PC version, installed it and started playing in the same amount of time it took to update the 360 and install the first disk.

That doesn't sound bad when I think back to the day I bought my PS3...it took me about 2 and a half hours to download and install system patches/updates and an additional hour and a half to install the one game that I bought for the thing. I wonder how long game-installs will take with the XBone80...? Oh well: got my Wii U and can play those games instantly.

Shouldn't this be implemented directly into the system so no need for patching on day 1?

Let me see if I am actually getting this. A corporation is releasing a product that is knowingly non functional and informing the public in advance of its release that the product will be sold in a non functional state?

And they think anyone would be so gullible and self destructive to still willingly purchase such a product? Thats seriously ballse........

Oh wait, sorry. I forgot what the color the sky is in this reality and that there ARE those who would actually do such a thing.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

A part of me thinks that 15-30 minute download patch is no big deal since most OSs and software needs to update upon installation.

The other part of me thinks that it's dumb as hell they aren't ready to go out of the box, since the whole point of a console is simplicity. You're supposed to pop in a game and play, without all the installation hassle of a pc.

I'm gonna go with the second one. Consoles are supposed to be simple. The more pc-like complications there are, the more the manufactures are missing the point of having a console.

So if you can't hook it up to the internet, you just bought an expensive paperweight?

Reminds me of the PS3 updates. I'm totally ok with day one patches, especially if it's just part of me getting it all set up. I'd expect that most updates won't take that long afterwards. It's probably just account for all the changes they made.

Assuming the multi-billion dollar software company has good experience with computers, they should presumably be able to deal with this. If they didn't know about it in advance, then sure, there'd be problems, but Microsoft literally /chose/ the date of release. It's not going to catch them off guard.
The problem with this idea is that gamers have been hit with plenty of day one glitches recently: SimCity & Diablo 3 come to mind immediately.

Just because you have "experience with computers" doesn't mean you can't screw up.

I heard that the WiiU update was causing some serious problems when it launched. Freezes and such, leading to people trying to reboot, leading to bricked machines.

Take some notes MS, this is not a blunder you can afford. I don't mind the patch since all the changes in policy have occurred. But it better be smooth or you'll have a ton of returned merchandise and effectively give people another "Kick Me" sign to hang on your back.

Bite me. Microsoft is always super optimistic with download speeds. 30-40 is probably more realistic.

My Windows updates is constantly saying "Just a few moments" for about ten minutes, so...

But...

...why?
I'd imagine it's because of all the policy roll-backs that they implemented. So to be fair, this is actually kinda understandable seeing as how they need to make it so that the Kinect doesn't need to be plugged in, you don't need an online connection, and all the other stuff that they back-tracked on just to make the console even remotely appealing.
True, but Microsoft could very easily just have the software updates factory installed to the console and skip the whole "wait 15-20 minutes just to use the console" business.

If it's too much work to update every Xbone before they leave the factory, can't Microsoft at least stick a DVD in the box that has the necessary files?

Amazing how last gen consoles amd games didn't need constant updates the way this gen does.

So, how many (if any at all) will get returned because it refuses to operate without being connected to the internet, which is beyond the abilities (or infrastructure) of it's wide eyed and disappointed new owner?

It didn't do the Wii U any favours on launch week, wonder how Microsoft will fare a year later.
Yeah and most of the hard drive being taken up. Still I think the key difference between the two is that Nintendo had more good will than Microsoft. They never created a PR nightmare with the new features and they immediately started working on a solution to the problem which I hear is now much better. Still I'm burned out on Microsoft now. There is nothing that even remotely interests me on the Xbone. That Titanfall game might if I took a look at it but that's the only one I hear about. Ryse just looks like nerfed God of War and I wasn't a fan of God of War to begin with. On the other hand the Wii U has Bayonetta 2 and the PS4 is going to have KH3.

Very true, honestly this is really no big deal. I'm not so picky that I can't wait around 20 minutes.
I wouldn't say hate, more so frustration. It's frustrating that a console requires an update on launch, it shouldn't have to. It's frustrating that you have to be online to do so, not everyone has that privilege. It's frustrating because most people wont be able to play their newly purchased console and game on day 1 because they have to download an update that a bunch of others also have to download.

It's just another thing Microsoft has done that shouldn't have to be, so it's understandable as to why people are gonna get angry at a company that seems to really not care at all, and they really do come off as being quite arrogant and demanding at times (Just look at the initial, "Xbox One HAS to be Always Online" videos and the eventual 180).
