I think I get what Microsoft is trying to do here...

They are trying to take the luxury of playing games to the next level... If you don't have the money to support your habit in full, then you don't deserve to support it at all. No used games for you! What? You still have an old TV? I hear Sony sells TVs... go talk to them about upgrading? No money for that? Diet of Ramen Noodles? Get out of my sight you dirty poorling!

OR! Maybe this is all a government conspiracy to shut down the gaming industry as a whole so we can stop gun violence.

Just sayin...

Well, as someone with ZERO HD TVs in my household, because they're all 90's era, big screen SD ones, this is certainly unfriendly news.

I actually think the last poll found that nearly 30-40% of TV owners still owned SD TVs as their primary television... so that seems like a lot of the market they'll still miss out on.
I. Don't think senior citizens are in the target demographic anyway.

Hark! Whats that noise? Its the sound of Microsoft digging its own grave. Just being who they are this company is already a lightning rod for misdirected hate. Going out of their way to so arrogantly alienate people who would have otherwise been happy customers seems a rather poor business plan.

When only one device won't work with your aging yet still working as intended tech, that device is the one out of step with everyone else. I'm personally seeing the Xbox One akin to the DAT tape of the music world or the Laser Disc of the video world. I also find it hilarious that the article author mentions Betamax, as I feel that in a few years that is exactly how console gamers will remember the Xbox One.

This is retarded, most new HDTV's have the features Microsoft is banging on about installed as standard.

Having it SD compatible would have opened up a nice market of consumers who want those features but don't/can't shell out for a new TV.

Oh lord, please dont be apart of that 'Xbone' group. Every time I see a post with that word in it, I immediately throw out all credibility of that post and stop reading. This also include M$ and the such. It feels sooooooooooooo immature.

But about the original topic... I cant specifically say anything good or bad about this. Many people are using Neilson ratings as their go to stat, but we also dont see how many of those people who use SD TV's actually connect an Xbox to it. With the current population, we have a LARGE amount of older adults compared to younger, and they are the most likely to have those older SD TV's.
How can you say anything about the topic if you immediately stopped reading?
I did read the rest of the story here mainly because it wasn't just a normal post on the forum, which is the main area im point the 'immaturity' and such comments. I still felt the need to comment on it though because of the prevalence of those things on the forum.

Also, I like your news write ups, that's just an annoying tidbit on this one, personally.

Another reason why I won't get this. I still use my ten year old dinosaur of an SDTV.

Why was this news post so needlessly antagonistic towards people who still have SDTVs? I am someone who is working hard to make ends meet, and even if I wanted this steaming pile of crap of a console to play games I can get on my 5-year-old-PC anyway, the cost of an XBone being $600-$700 instead of $400-$500 (New TV + Console) is enough of a difference to keep me from even attempting to enjoy it.

I just thought the line about the Nixon era was a little condescending. If everyone wants to keep shelling out untold amounts of money year in and year out, trying to keep up with the circus of a cycle that is maintaining the newest technology, that's fine. But is there really a need to act so elitist and condescending to people who don't want to possess or can't afford the newest technology? You see it when people mock a slow loader in a match of LoL for having a "toaster" for a computer, you see it when its insinuated that anyone without an HDTV (slightly higher resolution football, be still my beating heart) is a caveman. "You don't have shiny stuff, luuuul" isn't that classy when there are just some things that people can't afford.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Maybe the Escapist's recent trend towards occasional needlessly sensationalist titles for their news articles has just soured the tone in which I read all their media. Except of course for Jimquisition, Moviebob, and Yatzhee: those three rock and I could never sour on them lol.

This really isn't surprising at all. Hell, where I live you can't even watch normal television without a HD digital box thingo. Personally I can never go back to playing in SD again as it looks so terrible compared to HD. Sometimes you just need to move forward with technology.

Or maybe

JUST maybe

People who don't already have an HDTV and are perfectly happy with SD don't want to have to spend another $200 dollars just to be able to play a $60 game on a next generation console? especially after paying $500 for the Xbone itself?
It's all matter of circumstances. If you end up having to pay more, you pay more.

I know I won't have the money saved up for the Xbox One when it launches, so what will I do?

That's right, I will wait till I've saved the money to get it.

If I didn't have an HDTV already, what would I do?

That's right, I wouldn't go complaining that I had to get one to play the new console. I would just wait a bit longer till I could afford both.

If you can't afford a luxury, there is no use bellyaching about it.

Besides, if a person is complaining about a little thing like having to wait a little longer to get a TV as well to play the console, then they obviously weren't interested enough to purchase the console in the first place.

If a person is truly interested and wants to get something, they will do what they have to do to get it.

Just replaced all of our SDTVs last year. Can't say I've actually seen any being sold in stores anymore. I was actually looking for one for the kitchen because of the small square shape.

Just going to throw this out there to all of the "poor college student" crowd... Pawn Shops. I bought a 32" HDTV from SANYO that surprisingly looks amazing for only $160 with a full year warranty, and it supports digital out, has 3 HDMI ports, can support DVI, and has plenty of Analog inputs.

If you look hard enough, you can find decent sized HDTV's for dirt cheap.

[Edit:] And this is coming from a poor college student.

I can't believe this surprises anyone. Everything else made in the last 5 years hasn't supported HDTV either.

I'm honestly surprised so many of you still have sdtvs. If any of you need a cheap alternative you can get a computer monitor with HDMI in for probably around $200 and it will be 1080p. It won't have speakers, but hey; it's cheap for a reason.

In fact, it might be worth checking to see if your PC monitor already has this feature!

Excuse me, my current primary tv is a very nice large screen SDTV. While I certainly could get a small tv for a couple hundred dollars, to get a hdtv of similar size would be over 1000 dollars. 1000 dollars to replace a perfectly functional tv I would then have no room for and have to get rid of. F*** you XBone.

you dont actually need speakers you can just use any pc speakers you have liying around or just buy some of the dirt cheap ones that are out there (or invest a tiny bit more and get a small 2.1 logitech or creative speakers sistem they still sound like crap but at leas youll get some bass and it will be far better than ANY tv speaker)

The bad thing is, this doesn't just make it incompatible with SD TVs. It also knocks early HDTVs out of the running, both CRT sets and early Plasma/LCD sets. One of my college roommates (and this was only a few years ago) had an LCD set handed down from his uncle, which had initially been purchased in 2004. It completely lacked an HDMI input, although it had both Component and VGA in, either one of which is sufficient for HD video. In fact, the only reason you can't generally get 1080P out of component cables is the reason listed in this article -- HDCP. The cables are plenty capable of it, but the DRM that came along with Blu-Ray won't let the video go out of them at full quality, because there's no way to prevent people from making near perfect copies if you do it that way. Not that that stopped the pirates from getting perfect copies anyway.

What kind of adapters are you talking about? Just getting a box to convert from HDMI to VGA or Component will set you back about $100, and that's assuming you want to hook up to an HD monitor that lacks HDMI, and not downscale things to something an SD TV can work with. Most units like that also introduce input lag, which is bad for gaming.

Only reason I have an HDTV is because my old one broke down and in my town nowhere sold SD ones, so I had to HDTV, it's nice, but why not make an option for it like PS3 - 360, some games may not support it, fine I guess... Would still be stupid, but it would better then nothing.

So HDMI is the minimum? That's rough for people with early HD sets.

Out of curiosity, how big is the TV because my 40 inch screen full HD cost me about the equivalent of $600 USD at the time, was three years back.
