Wait...civilians...in-game?!

That could work. Keep it from feelings like a corridor fest.

I had never heard of X Com so I don't know what the original was supposed to be but I think the trailer was pretty interesting, but I can understand why the fans of the original would be pissed if it dosen't resemble the original.

It's not X-COM despite the name, but that doesn't mean it's going to be a bad game. In fact, I'm rather looking forward to it, in the same way I'm looking forward to Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

As with DX, I won't mind if it's a fast-paced action-shooter so long as it's a GOOD one. I may pause to lament the fact that it's got a name I'm familiar with on a game that's nothing like it's predecessors but I don't think I'd dwell on it.

I'm liking the enemy concepts and the '50s style... it's not really X-COM but it looks good on its own merits.

What concerns me is the amount of people who haven't played X-Com here. Probably one of the finest (and hardest) TBS games ever made.

Original Xcom [http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/XCOMUFODefense/Update%202/index.html]

My main issue with the video is the aliens were way too weak for an XCom game. In the originals, aliens would not only one shot soldiers, but your puny earth weapons wouldn't have nearly the range or even damage to kill (or even hit) aliens reliably (with the exception of things like missile launchers).

Aliens were scary. Your best soldiers could be lost in an instant until the later parts of the game when you could research alien weapons and armor a bit (and manage to drag some soldiers through a few fights for some experience). And even then, sometimes your best soldiers would be rendered useless in the second half of the game when the aliens started mind controlling the weak willed ones.

But who knows, maybe they'll make a decent FPS out of it. The floating dimensional whatsits looked kinda cool.

I take great solace in the fact that I read an interview in my print media magazine that pretty much destroys all you naysayers and what you are thinking this game will be. it will not be generic and shootery, it still manages to pump all the Xcom strategy into a far more atmospheric format.
Perhaps it would be best for them to hand out that print media at E3, rather than show When Oil Attacks, a 50's era monster movie, which does nothing to convince anyone that it 'still manages to pump all the Xcom strategy into a far more atmospheric format'. If they tank the franchise because they can't figure out how to properly convey anything of interest to fans or newcomers, you'll at least have your great solace in lording over naysayers.

Glad to hear that. I was going to look into it more closely. This just makes me want to do it faster.

Even if we look past the fact that it's clearly not X-Com, I still don't think it's an impressive trailer. The aliens aren't original, the setting's not original, photographing the aliens to "study" them... not original. If all 2K is making is Competent Generic Shooter Number 27, why put the X-Com name on it? Why not save that franchise for something actually worthwhile? Because at this point, it seems clear that most people who like the trailer have never played X-Com, and most people who have played X-Com don't like the trailer.

And I very much agree with Nightfish. The number of people who haven't played X-Com is disturbing indeed.

The way we'll know whether its shit or not is through the research system: if its ANYTHING like bioshock's system, it will be garbage. A huge portion of x-com's charm was researching alien tech recovered from the field, and making your own stuff. Along with the base building/management, the other half was the fear of the dark you came to feel during the missions. This iteration seems to not have this...but yes, its early.

That ain't so bad. But then again, I've never played X-com.
See, and there you miss the disappointment.
It's like if a new company made a new "Call of Duty" game, and the first trailer showed it as a dance-dance style game. You'd say 'That's nothing like Call of Duty'. That's what this is. Taking a deep, interesting, turn based strategy game with an isometric view and based building set in the not too distant future...into a first person shooter set in the 50s with boiling oil aliens and flying bricks.

PASS.
Well, let me ask you this, would you be interested judging solely by the trailer in this if it didn't have the X-Com name?
Because, having never played X-Com, I can clearly see that this is not X-Com.
But it actually might be a really good game.

I played the original X-com games and find this HIGHLY disappointing. :-/

This is like X-Com: Birth of the Men in Black, Terror From the Kitchen, UFO Photographers or some bollocks.

Oh look, it's Bioshock 3.
Is that a bad thing? I liked BS1, and 2 was....passable.

I'm in concurrence with the idea that this is not looking especially like XCOM. But, I thought the blob aliens looked pretty neat, certainly not entirely un-original, though, can't really place where I've seen something similar...the Flood in Halo maybe?

Second...I got the feeling the trailer was just to show off the engine and how the gameplay would look, as it really doesn't give anything in depth about the story, whether or not those blobs are going to make up the majority of combat situations, or really very much of anything.

I'll try and find it, but I read a more detailed preview type article that paints a more promising picture. And I have played all the XCOMS, even *shudders* both Enforcer and Interceptor, and went so far as to buy those mediocre 'spiritual' sequels because I'd thought they'd bring the magic back. They did not.

I don't know, I have a little hope that, being backed by a reasonably big studio with money they can do something with it. At least, I hope if it's not XCOM, that it'll at least be a good game.

If not, well, that's no money out of my wallet.
