See, and there you miss the disappointment.
It's like if a new company made a new "Call of Duty" game, and the first trailer showed it as a dance-dance style game. You'd say 'That's nothing like Call of Duty'. That's what this is. Taking a deep, interesting, turn based strategy game with an isometric view and based building set in the not too distant future...into a first person shooter set in the 50s with boiling oil aliens and flying bricks.

PASS.
Well, let me ask you this, would you be interested judging solely by the trailer in this if it didn't have the X-Com name?
Because, having never played X-Com, I can clearly see that this is not X-Com.
But it actually might be a really good game.
Then if it is clearly not an X-Com game they should have made a completely new IP.

Because at this point, it seems clear that most people who like the trailer have never played X-Com, and most people who have played X-Com don't like the trailer.
I don't really see the problem with that; the trailer seems designed to try and get a wider audience interested in the game - hence the reason it's an FPS in the first place. You just pointed out that a lot of people haven't played XCom before...

I am just waiting for them to give the Baldur's Gate IP to Bethesda so they can turn it into a FPS.

I take great solace in the fact that I read an interview in my print media magazine that pretty much destroys all you naysayers and what you are thinking this game will be. it will not be generic and shootery, it still manages to pump all the Xcom strategy into a far more atmospheric format.
Links or gtfo?

OT: I own quite a few if not all the X-com games on Steam, but I haven't gotten around to really giving them an honest try, but from what I've seen, it was absolutely nothing like that

Even if we look past the fact that it's clearly not X-Com, I still don't think it's an impressive trailer.
It looks like Redneck Rampage 2.

And I very much agree with Nightfish. The number of people who haven't played X-Com is disturbing indeed.

A brilliant "Let's Play" by @GloatingSwine that shows how wonderful it is [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.82574]

I can, sort of, think it could be a Destroy All Humans: Humanity Strikes Back or even Zombies Ate My Neighbours: 20 years on, but X-Com? No.

The fact that the game has nothing to do with X-Com is unfortunate but it shouldn't stop people from enjoying the game for what it is.
Yes, this should've been a new IP. But, still, even if it's not, it quite clearly can be a good game.

It looks boring, to be honest.
Shooting uninteresting black blobs in the 50s?
A flying brick that shoots lasers?
Meh.

Nothing about the trailer makes me interested in the game as a stand-alone product.
And everything about the trailer makes me loath the game as an X-Com game.

Perhaps it would be best for them to hand out that print media at E3, rather than show When Oil Attacks, a 50's era monster movie, which does nothing to convince anyone that it 'still manages to pump all the Xcom strategy into a far more atmospheric format'. If they tank the franchise because they can't figure out how to properly convey anything of interest to fans or newcomers, you'll at least have your great solace in lording over naysayers.
Yes, it was very stupid move to show an action trailer when everyone was already doubting the game[footnote]Or, then again, maybe it's a tactical move to keep everyone's hopes as low a possible, so when it really does turn out to be great, everyone will be all the more impressed.[/footnote], but that doesn't justify damning the game itself, just because of a stupid marketing strategy, when at least one magazine (PC Gamer UK in my case) has previewed the game and explained how it seems very much to be an X-Com game, just with the tactical combat replaced with FPS combat.

I like it, people might complain about the blobs, but then again the Celatids <a href=http://www.ufopaedia.org/images/5/5b/Celatid.gif>looked like shit. Literally.

The original XCOM is easily a "Best game of all time" contender, but every game since (Even terror from the deep) has been pretty mediocre at best.

Quite frankly it's hard for the series to get any worse so yeah, I'll dig it.

I get what you are saying and it can be a good game but what I see is that X-Com has a legacy to it.

You go to purchase an X-Com game expecting X-Com and to bring it home and get something totally different can very well kill someones enjoyment right there.

On a mild comparison, look at the new C&C game, STILL an RTS but the major changes to that game resulted in very disappointed and unfulfilled fans.

But a counterpoint to that would be Fallout 3. It went from Isometric to FPS and it did quite well, and was an enjoyable game. Still didn't live up to the true Fallout feel but it was there for the most part. (IMO).

Another thing is we have already had our 2K 50's Sci-Fi/Steam Punk-ish shooter, 2 of them. Can we move away from the FPS and try something a bit more original or at least go back to something resembling the X-Com formula. Even if it is not turn based we could have done real time or something.

I don't think that's a very good comparison because Fallout 3 still maintains a lot of the same ideas as it's predecessors. This literally shares almost nothing in common with the prior XCom games.

I think I would actually be more interested in the game if it was simply titled something else.
~holds fanboy rage under strict control~
Lets settle on saying that Fallout 3 was quite different from the first 2, to say the least. And about XCom, we simply don't really know yet - there might be some body/weapon research to be done in this new game, or other aspects that can make it at least a bit similar to the old ones.

As for the title, well, I agree and actually feel the same about Fallout 3 :)
Err, I slipped one. Sorry.

I think that I would like to play a call of duty dance dance revolution. But then again, I'm all for wacky cross-overs.

Then again, I'm not in your shoes. But, wait for the game to come out and let's see if it's that bad.
